AI for IoT: What Is Edge AI, and What Will It Enable?

September 15, 2026

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Edge AI puts intelligence on the IoT device, directly at the source of the data. Instead of transmitting raw data to the cloud and waiting for a response, the AI model runs locally and infers the data’s meaning in real time. The device responds with near-zero latency and consumes far less bandwidth. It maintains functionality even if the network connection drops.

In an IoT product, the edge is often the cellular module. The same chip that manages the radio and network connection can host a small, efficient AI model and run inference without relying on the cloud.

Cloud-dependent connected products follow a fixed data path: a sensor captures a value, the module transmits that value to the cloud, and a server processes it and returns the result. This route introduces latency and is dependent on the network connection. Edge AI for IoT relocates that processing to the device, analyzing data locally.

Key benefits of edge AI include:

These gains enable functions that were previously impractical, such as complex event detection performed directly on critical hardware (e.g., medical monitors or pacemakers).

Read about Edge AI in Connected Healthcare

Every edge AI use case begins with the data a product collects. How the module gathers and manages that input determines what the model can act on. A module that manages the network connection can read its own signal quality, allowing an AI model to monitor network availability and dynamically optimize reliability.

The same logic applies to power management. The best power-consumption results are achieved through a clever combination of classic heuristic processing and pipelining AI model usage. The module wakes the processor for inference only when raw sensor data warrants it, keeping the device idle otherwise and making edge AI for IoT truly viable on battery-constrained hardware.

Until recently, deploying edge AI meant adding costly dedicated microprocessors or external hardware accelerators, increasing both BOM cost and board space. Two major trends have changed the equation:

Hardware scale dictates capability. The smaller the SoC, the smaller the model must be. While higher-end edge platforms manage high-throughput tasks, the majority of high-volume IoT products rely on streamlined models scaled to fit compact cellular SoCs.

To deliver value, a useful model does not need to be massive; it often acts as an “invisible intelligence” operating quietly in the background. Tasks that are practical today are narrow, well-defined, and light enough to run directly on a constrained module:

While deep multi-modal reasoning and frontier large language models (LLMs) still require massive cloud clusters, small language models (SLMs) and micro-LLMs (under 10 billion parameters) are beginning to land on GPU/NPU-powered edge hardware equipped with as little as 4GB of RAM. A similar shift is happening with high-resolution video analytics, where single-stage object detectors enable localized edge execution.

However, while high-end industrial applications are moving to the edge, the vast majority of deployed IoT devices operate on much lower-spec hardware, frequently relying on the lightweight compute power available directly inside the cellular modem SoC. For complex, massive-scale processing, larger models still rely on cloud clusters for the heavy lifting.

A use case is a strong fit for edge AI in IoT when:

Questions to ask a module vendor:

The case for edge AI depends on where the work happens. The real question is which part of a product should run a model. A vibration signature on a motor or a spoken keyword in a noisy room is a likely candidate, but each carries its own limits on memory and power, as well as accuracy in the field.

Weighing a specific use case against a specific module is where the engineering starts, and it is a conversation Telit Cinterion’s IoT team is glad to have.

What are edge AI devices?

Edge AI devices are connected products that run an AI model locally, near the data source, instead of sending data to the cloud. On many IoT products, the cellular module is the edge AI device. It handles both the network connection and the model on the same chip.

What is edge AI in simple terms?

Edge AI is AI that runs on the device itself, close to the data, so the product can interpret its input and act without relying on the cloud.

What is the difference between edge AI and cloud AI?

Cloud AI processes data on a central server, which adds latency and depends on a network connection. Edge AI processes data on the device, so it responds faster and continues working offline.

Can a cellular module really run AI?

Yes, for the right task. A module runs small, optimized models well, such as anomaly detection, audio keyword detection, and targeted vision. Larger models still rely on cloud clusters for the heavy lifting, but streamlined versions could run on high-end edge devices as well.

Smart Vending Modules and the Future of Automated Retail

September 24, 2026

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Smart modules integrate high-performance computing with wireless connectivity, a pivotal advancement in Internet of Things (IoT) device development that provides an all-in-one solution for smart vending machine architecture. A single smart module may contain:

When coupled with IoT edge devices, smart modules enhance vending operations by supporting technological innovations like gesture-based interactions.

Today’s consumers are accustomed to intuitive, smartphone-like experiences, including scroll-swipe touch displays and contactless payments. Smart vending machines offer a similar experience by incorporating technology such as:

Smart vending is a staple in train stations, airports, and other high-traffic locations like entertainment venues. On college campuses, the machines provide 24/7 access to essential products. Retailers place IoT-enabled vending machines at popular destinations that lack stores, such as beaches and outdoor concert venues.

Vending machines equipped with smart modules deliver personalized, secure, and convenient transactions, modernizing the vending experience.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global intelligent vending machine market is projected to grow from $11B in 2025 to over $53B by 2034, with an estimated CAGR of 18% from 2026 to 2034. This expansion is fueled by the increasing use of cashless payments and the wider adoption of IoT and connected technologies.

Smart modules allow companies to deliver a technologically advanced, future-proof vending machine experience. Unlike traditional modules, smart modules are designed for devices with complex human-machine interfaces (HMIs). Their built-in advanced computing and graphics processing support high-end multimedia and IoT edge devices.

Traditional modules require extensive development of external hardware and software. Companies must work with multiple vendors to integrate different technologies into IoT-enabled devices.

Smart modules embed all necessary capabilities into a single unit, reducing the physical footprint without sacrificing performance or scalability. Their ready-to-use design simplifies development cycles and reduces time to market.

IoT-enabled smart vending machines rely on sensors to collect real-time data, capturing machine status and storage conditions while recording transactions and customer interactions. Once analyzed, that data helps operators streamline operations and improve the user experience. Sensors augment smart vending by collecting data to support:

Integrating sensors with smart modules creates a more capable smart vending system. Connecting that system to cloud services supports personalization and optimizes business operations.

Vending machines equipped with AI and machine learning (ML) will learn and adapt to consumer habits over time. Insights from analyzed data will help the system suggest products that match customers’ preferences.

AI chatbots and virtual assistants can provide customers with recommendations and real-time, personalized support. When customers choose to opt in, the recommendations become more precise.

Smart vending machines may use AI to deliver dynamic ads and personalized content, adapting to user profiles and locations. This AI-driven marketing optimizes promotions for targeted consumer interactions.

Should an error occur, AI-driven troubleshooting helps technicians diagnose issues more quickly and prepare for service visits, reducing repair times.

Predictive analytics enhances payment processing and helps detect fraud. ML models identify patterns to improve security and reduce transaction failures. Computer vision technology adds another layer of innovation, reducing theft and unauthorized access while enabling seamless transactions.

Biometric technology uses an individual’s unique physical features to analyze patterns and confirm their identity. One method is to scan a person’s fingerprint to verify who they are, helping prevent unauthorized access and fraud. Biometric verification may support the age verification process when dispensing age-restricted products.

Contactless payment solutions offer quick, convenient options while enhancing security through encryption and payment tokenization.

Smart vending machines accept payment from digital wallets. Apps like Apple Pay and Google Pay let customers tap to pay using a smartphone or smartwatch. Near-field communication (NFC) technology facilitates these transactions, letting customers tap or wave a card or device near the vending machine’s reader to complete a purchase.

QR code payments are another option. Customers scan a code displayed on the vending machine to pay for their purchase through mobile banking apps or e-wallets.

Voice and image recognition will simplify ordering and enable hands-free, voice-activated payments, an emerging technology that will allow customers to order products using natural speech.

IoT device manufacturers face complex requirements when building smart vending machines. The right IoT partner can reduce that complexity and help you move from concept to deployment faster.

Letter to the FA Community
Image File
Original HTML

Dear Friedreich’s Ataxia Community,

We are excited to officially introduce Solid Biosciences to the FA community. Solid Biosciences was founded by individuals directly impacted by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, driven by a deeply personal mission to develop meaningful therapies for patients and families. Since that time, our mission has expanded to include other urgent, rare neuromuscular and cardiac conditions, but we continue to be guided by the same passion, urgency and patient centricity that inspired our beginnings.

Today, we are proud to connect with the FA community to share news of a meaningful update to the developing treatment landscape: SGT-212, our first-in-industry dual-route of administration gene therapy has received FDA IND clearance.

This program originated with FA212 LLC, a company founded by FA families, led by Tom Hamilton; the development of SGT-212 would not have been possible without their visionary efforts. Additionally, the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), the University of Pennsylvania, and most importantly, the FA patient community all contributed to the development of this program. The insights and feedback shared by individuals and families living with FA have been instrumental in shaping this program, ensuring that it reflects the real hopes and needs of the community. Your resilience and determination inspire us every day, and we are honored to bring SGT-212 to patients.

A Therapy Built on Listening to the FA Community

SGT-212 represents an innovative approach to treating FA, shaped by the patient community’s concerns and priorities. Families have consistently emphasized the need for a therapy that addresses both the debilitating neurologic symptoms and life-threatening cardiac manifestations of FA.

To meet these needs, SGT-212 uses a dual-route of administration approach to deliver full-length frataxin protein:

- Intravenous (IV) infusion targets the cardiac manifestations of FA, with potential to treat other impacted organ systems, and

- Intradentate nuclei (IDN) infusion directly targets the region of the cerebellum most affected by, and implicated in, FA-associated neurologic decline.

This unique approach aims for both precision delivery and optimal dosing to critical tissues and aspires to provide a meaningful and differentiated treatment option capable of addressing the full spectrum of the disease.

What’s Next?

In the second half of 2025, Solid Biosciences plans to initiate a Phase 1b clinical trial for SGT-212. This study will evaluate the safety and tolerability of the therapy in non-ambulatory followed by ambulatory adults with FA and will follow participants out to five years, marking an important step toward delivering this promising therapy to patients.

Join the Conversation

We invite you to join a live conference call tomorrow, January 8, 2025, at 8:30 AM ET, where we will further discuss our FA program as well as other initiatives. While this call is primarily for investors, we encourage members of the FA community to join and learn more about our broader efforts. The call can be accessed via the Events page of our website at Events • Solid Biosciences Inc.

In addition, we will join FARA in the coming weeks for a community webinar. This event will provide an opportunity to engage with our team, ask questions, and dive deeper into our plans for SGT-212. Details will be shared soon, and we hope you will join us for this important discussion.

Please see our most recent press release for more information related to our FA Program, including information related to forward-looking statements within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 contained in the letter. The press release can be found here.

Together, We Are Solid

From our origins to this new chapter with the FA community, Solid Biosciences has always been guided by the voices of patients and families. Your feedback has shaped our programs including SGT-212, and we remain steadfast in our mission to develop therapies that address the real and pressing needs of those we serve. Thank you for welcoming us into your community. We look forward to continuing the dialogue and working alongside all of you to advance meaningful therapies for Friedreich’s ataxia and beyond.

Sincerely,

Annie Ganot, co-founder & head of patient advocacy

Letter to the Duchenne Community
Image File
Original HTML

Dear Duchenne Community,

Today at the 2026 MDA Clinical & Scientific Conference, we announced a positive clinical update on the SGT-003 gene therapy program. This update includes interim safety and biomarker data from the ongoing Phase 1/2 INSPIRE DUCHENNE clinical trial.

To date, 40 participants have been dosed with SGT-003. The data include robust expression of microdystrophin, the shortened version of the dystrophin protein delivered by SGT-003 that is designed to help support and protect muscle cells during movement. The data also show restoration of proteins such as beta-sarcoglycan and nNOS, which normally work together with dystrophin as part of the muscle cell support system known as the dystrophin-associated protein complex (DAPC).

The update also includes signals related to muscle health. For example, fewer eMHC fibers in muscle tissue, which appear when muscle is repeatedly injured and repairing itself, may suggest less ongoing muscle damage. In addition, reductions in several proteins measured in the blood including CK, ALT, AST, LDH, and titin can provide insight into muscle cell integrity because these proteins can leak into the bloodstream when muscle cells are injured.

The data include measures of heart function, including left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), a measure of how well the heart pumps blood.

SGT-003 continues to demonstrate an encouraging safety profile and has been generally well tolerated in the 40 participants dosed as of March 11, 2026, and is administered using a lower-burden, steroid-only prophylactic immunomodulation regimen.

We are indebted to the participants, their families, and the clinical study teams whose commitment makes this progress possible.

We are actively engaged in a series of meetings with the FDA to receive guidance on a potential accelerated approval pathway for SGT-003 and expect to provide additional regulatory updates following these interactions.

For additional details, please refer to today’s press release and our 2026 MDA presentations (available following the close of the conference).

We are looking forward to keeping the Duchenne community informed through regular and transparent communication, including both written updates and dedicated community webinars. DALLAS, Aug. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — XTI Aerospace, Inc. (Nasdaq: XTIA) (“XTI Aerospace,” or “XTI”), an aerospace and advanced technology platform and parent company of Drone Nerds, LLC, (“Drone Nerds”), a leading drone solutions platform serving commercial, enterprise and government customers, today announced a partnership with DBOX to expand access to autonomous drone docking solutions across the U.S. public safety and government markets through Drone Nerds’ enterprise solutions portfolio.

Designed for agencies establishing or expanding drone-as-first-responder and remotely managed unmanned aerial vehicle (“UAV”) operations, DBOX combines a fixed docking station, networking station, compatible aircraft, and DBOX Ground Control Software into an integrated platform for repeatable aerial missions.

The addition expands Drone Nerds’ ability to support public safety and government agencies leveraging drone technology for incident response, search operations, area surveillance, perimeter monitoring, and command-center situational awareness. Compatibility with select Parrot platforms also creates an opportunity to support current Parrot users exploring a transition toward dock-based and remotely managed operations.

“Partnering with DBOX advances our strategy to provide public safety and government customers with a more complete and customizable approach to autonomous drone operations, including drone-as-first-responder programs,” said Jeremy Schneiderman, CEO of Drone Nerds. “By combining DBOX docking infrastructure and software with our integration, training, support, and existing technology partnerships, we can provide both ready-to-deploy systems and customized solutions aligned with each organization’s operational requirements. This partnership also creates new opportunities within our current customer base and expands our role across the program lifecycle, supporting long-term growth for Drone Nerds.”

As the exclusive U.S. distributor, Drone Nerds will bring DBOX autonomous docking solutions to the public safety and government market. The DBOX PRT, designed to operate with the Parrot Anafi UKR, Anafi UKR GOV, and Anafi UKR XLR platforms, provides agencies with a dock-based option built around select Parrot aircraft.

According to the DBOX product materials, DBOX PRT is compatible with the following Parrot platforms:

- Parrot Anafi UKR: MARS 8-channel and LoRa connectivity, 1,024-gram weight, up to 38 minutes of flight endurance, and a stated 2.7 thrust-to-weight ratio

- Parrot Anafi UKR GOV: Wi-Fi, LoRa, and 5G multi-link connectivity, an extended battery, up to 70 minutes of flight time, and a stated range of up to 40 kilometers

- Parrot Anafi UKR XLR: MARS 10-channel, LoRa, and 5G multi-link connectivity, an extended battery, up to 70 minutes of flight time, and a stated range of up to 40 kilometers

Manufacturer specifications also identify optical navigation for GNSS-denied flight, resistance to jamming, operation from -36°C to 50°C, an IP53 rating, dual RGB and infrared imaging with 35x zoom, and TAA, NDAA, and Blue sUAS designations across the compatible Parrot offering.

The DBOX PRT docking station itself includes integrated rain, wind, temperature, and humidity sensors, four security cameras, Ethernet connectivity, dual-SIM 5G access, and support for physical USB, Wi-Fi, and 5G aircraft data transfer, depending on the selected system version.

“DBOX PRT helps public safety organizations move from individual drone deployments toward more consistent, remotely managed operations,” said Dr. Linas Gelazanskas, CEO at DBOX. “Through Drone Nerds, agencies and current Parrot users will have access to the integration expertise, training, and ongoing support needed to evaluate autonomous drone infrastructure and incorporate it into their operational workflows.”

XTI Aerospace Announces Executive Leadership Transition

Original HTML

DALLAS, Aug. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — XTI Aerospace, Inc. (Nasdaq: XTIA) (“XTI Aerospace,” “XTI,” or the “Company”), an aerospace and advanced technology platform and parent company of Drone Nerds, LLC, (“Drone Nerds”), a leading drone solutions platform serving commercial, enterprise and government customers, today announced two leadership changes designed to streamline management and position the company to address the significant growth opportunities across the commercial, industrial and defense drone markets. Effective immediately, Scott Pomeroy has resigned as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The Board of Directors has appointed Jeremy Schneiderman as Interim CEO, and elected Jonathan Ornstein as Interim Chairman of the Board of Directors.

“The Board is committed to ensuring strong leadership to guide XTI Aerospace into its next chapter,” said Ornstein. “We thank Scott for his contributions over the last two and a half years and wish him the best in his next chapter. We are confident that the team, with Jeremy as Interim CEO, will serve the best interests of the Company and its objectives, employees and shareholders.”

“I’m honored to lead XTI at such an exciting inflection point, with U.S. sourcing becoming a critical point of differentiation in the commercial drone market,” said Schneiderman. “Meaningful work lies ahead, and I’m committed to driving disciplined execution and delivering sustained growth. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with the Drone Nerds team as we support our customers in this evolving, high-growth market.”

Jeremy Schneiderman has served as the chief executive officer of Drone Nerds since 2014, and under his leadership, Drone Nerds has grown into one of the premier providers of enterprise drone solutions, services, and hardware in the United States. With more than a decade of experience in the UAV industry, Jeremy has helped establish Drone Nerds as a trusted authority across multiple sectors through a combination of technical expertise, strong vendor partnerships, and a customer-first approach. He brings a program-focused perspective shaped by supporting organizations as they evaluate, deploy, and scale drone operations through platform selection, training, integration, and long-term support.

Mr. Ornstein served as chief executive officer of Mesa Air Group, Inc. (“Mesa”) from 1998 until November 2025 and as chairman of the board of directors of Mesa from 1999 until November 2025. Following his departure, Mesa completed a merger transaction and changed its name to Republic Airways Holdings Inc. Mr. Ornstein co-founded Virgin Express S.A./N.V., an airline in Brussels, Belgium, where he served as chief executive officer and chairman from 1995 until 1999. In 1994, Mr. Ornstein served as chief executive officer of Continental Express, and was later named senior vice president of airport services for Continental Airlines. Mr. Ornstein served as executive vice president and president of Mesa’s then-wholly owned subsidiary WestAir Holding, Inc. from 1988 to 1994. Mr. Ornstein began his career in aviation in 1986 with AirLA, a commuter airline in Los Angeles. Mr. Ornstein attended the University of Pennsylvania.

The Board is confident in the management team’s ability to maintain operational stability and advance the company’s strategic priorities during this transition.

The change in management and the review of corporate governance policies has resulted in the Company’s filing of a Form 12b-25, Notification of Late Filing, with the Securities and Exchange Commission with respect to its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2026. The Company intends to file its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q as soon as practicable. The delayed filing relates to the efforts the Company is taking to complete an internal review of the Registrant’s former Chief Executive Officer, and other related corporate governance matters.

As a result of the filing of Form 12b-25 Notification of Late Filing, management unfortunately will not be participating in Needham’s Annual Virtual Industrial Tech, Robotics and Power Conference on August 17-18.
