AI-found CVEs: what PHP2Shell means for your triage
Image File
Original HTML

If your team parks a vulnerability because no one has shown a way to exploit it, PHP2Shell is the case against waiting. A PHP core developer found early signs of the bug in 2024, no one found a concrete exploit, and the fix stalled. This year, researchers working with frontier AI models turned it into unauthenticated remote code execution in PHP, the language runtime that serves a large share of the web. AI-assisted research has made finding and proving bugs cheaper for defenders and attackers alike, so the work that now decides your exposure is the fix: understanding the patch, getting it onto the versions you run, and shipping it before attackers use it.

Triage that waits for a proven exploit is waiting on a timeline that AI-assisted research sets, for defenders and attackers alike.

See how a parked 2024 finding became remote code execution

The PHP Foundation published its own account of how CVE-2026-109618 was found and fixed, and it reads like a triage decision most security teams would recognize. A 2024 external audit led a PHP core developer to the first signs of an out-of-memory problem. An exploit was theorized, but no one found a concrete attack vector. Every fix the security team considered came with a cost: a compatibility break, new denial-of-service potential, or changes to third-party extensions that seemed impossible to coordinate. With no known path to remote code execution, work on the fix stalled and restarted for months.

Then the research changed. Calif, auditing PHP through OpenAI's Patch the Planet program, reported an unconditional remote code execution with the same root cause. OpenAI reported the same root cause on its own, and Wiz added more attack paths. On Apache with mod_php, an unauthenticated request can trigger the bug before any application code runs. Both PHP2Shell CVEs are rated 9.2 under CVSS v4.0.

The PHP Foundation called the delay a structural failure of its own process and resources. The more useful lesson for your team is the shape of the failure: a known bug waited because exploitability was unproven, and AI-assisted research supplied the proof.

Expect AI-found bugs in the kernel, runtimes, and libraries you run

In April and May, Copy Fail, Dirty Frag, Fragnesia, and CIFSwitch hit the Linux kernel, and researchers have kept finding kernel vulnerabilities with AI since. Each of those four let an attacker who already had access to a system escalate privileges. PHP2Shell needs no access at all: the attack arrives over HTTP, against the runtime your web applications depend on.

The day the PHP fix shipped, Nathan Blackham, who leads the CIQ engineers who shipped those kernel fixes, wrote about AI-found CVEs that now include user-space software like PHP, in Patch PHP2Shell now and prepare for the next AI-found CVE. His expectation for what comes next: other language runtimes, and the libraries every distribution ships but few people read closely.

Read the CVE numbers for risk, then plan for the volume

Google's threat intelligence group put numbers on the trend in Vulnerability Discovery and Exploitation Trends in the AI Era. Monthly vulnerability disclosures rose from 5,045 in January 2026 to 10,740 in August. Exploitation in the wild rose from an average of 10.5 vulnerabilities a month in 2025 to 18 a month in 2026.

The same report warns against reading volume as risk. Vulnerabilities whose descriptions name the Linux kernel accounted for about 5,000 disclosures over those eight months, with no observed in-the-wild zero-day exploitation, and only about 0.23% of 2026 disclosures were seen exploited at all. The AI-discovered share points the other way: 50% of the vulnerabilities Google identified as likely AI-discovered lead to remote code execution, compared with 26% across the broader set.

When half of the vulnerabilities Google flagged as AI-discovered lead to remote code execution, sort your triage by consequence first and volume second.

From January to August 2026, Google recorded 141 vulnerabilities that were both disclosed and exploited, more than the 127 it recorded for all of 2025.

Check your PHP2Shell exposure. The PHP2Shell knowledge base article lists the patched packages by RLC Pro variant, the interim mitigations, and the update steps.

Retire "no known exploit" as a reason to wait

Does every low-severity finding become an emergency? No, and Google's exploitation figures show why: most disclosed vulnerabilities are never seen exploited. What changes is the reason you're allowed to park one.

Much of security triage still rests on the judgment that a bug is theoretical because no one can exploit it in practice. Google's report describes where AI models do their best work: memory corruption and logic bypasses in core C and C++ libraries, language runtimes, and hypervisors, found by reasoning through multistep code paths. Your production systems run that code whether or not your team maintains it.

A bug parked as too hard to exploit is now a candidate for the next AI-assisted audit, whether a defender or an attacker runs it.

For those components, rank a finding by what it would allow if someone proved the exploit, and by how exposed the affected systems are. Internet-facing PHP servers running mod_php sat at the top of that ranking for PHP2Shell.

Plan for the fix: read, backport, validate, ship

The PHP Foundation's post names the part AI doesn't do. "Tools now find bugs faster than ever, for defenders and attackers alike, and the number of reports will keep growing," the PHP Foundation wrote. "What tools cannot do is decide on the right fix for a long-standing design decision in the engine, weigh the compatibility trade-offs, and review the patch."

In Enterprise Linux, that work continues after upstream ships. The PHP project released fixes for its supported branches, PHP 8.2 through 8.5. Rocky Linux 9 ships PHP 8.0, and Rocky Linux 8 ships PHP as module streams, including 7.2, 7.4, and 8.0. For 7.4, 8.0, and 8.1, the project published source-only fix branches with no official binaries, so a distribution's engineers have to build, test, and ship those packages. PHP 7.2 got no upstream fix at all.

The same four steps repeat with every CVE: someone reads the upstream patch, backports it into the version in production, validates it, and ships it. For PHP2Shell, CIQ engineers shipped fixed base PHP 8.0 packages for Rocky Linux from CIQ Pro (RLC Pro) LTS 9.6 and 9.2 about three and a half hours after the upstream fix went public. Fixes for several module streams, and for CIQ Bridge on CentOS 7.9, followed over the next three days. A few older streams won't get a fix, including php:7.2, the default stream on Enterprise Linux 8.

Before the next AI-found CVE is disclosed, name the engineers who will read its patch, backport it to the versions you run, and validate it, and decide what they'll set aside to do it.

CIQ Stratum Kubernetes Engine: Kubernetes for the AI Era

Running Kubernetes means assembling about ten upstream projects that each release on their own schedule, then keeping them working together through every upgrade. AI raises the cost of that upkeep, because training and inference spread across many systems and capacity grows and shrinks with demand. CIQ Stratum Kubernetes Engine (SKE) ships those projects as one signed file that installs, joins, and upgrades your cluster on the Enterprise Linux you already run. It's open source Kubernetes for the AI era. SKE is licensed under Apache 2.0 and built by the team behind Rocky Linux, Fuzzball, Warewulf, and Apptainer.

SKE pins and tests every component as a set, so each cluster you run installs and upgrades the same way. What you learn on your first SKE cluster applies to your tenth. When you run more than one, including GPU clusters for AI work, CIQ Stratum Pro adds fleet management, single sign-on, and support from CIQ.

Run the whole cluster lifecycle from one signed file

SKE builds Kubernetes, etcd, containerd, runc, and kube-vip from unmodified upstream source and adds Cilium for networking and CoreDNS for cluster DNS. You download the file for your architecture, then run stratum up.

The same file also does four jobs after the install:

- Join: add worker and control-plane nodes to the cluster.

- Upgrade: rolling upgrades check node health at each step and roll back a node that fails.

- Snapshot: etcd snapshots run every 12 hours by default.

- Renew: certificates renew before they expire.

A web dashboard ships with SKE and gives you pods, logs, and shell access on each cluster.

AI agents work within the limits you set

Kubernetes runs in production at 82% of organizations that use containers, according to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation's Annual Cloud Native Survey. The same survey found that 66% of organizations hosting generative AI models run some or all of their inference on Kubernetes.

SKE includes an MCP server that AI agents use to read and change the cluster. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the interface AI assistants use to call tools. The MCP server in SKE has 37 tools in read, write, and destructive tiers. You choose which tiers to enable, and the server never registers tools above that tier.

Kubernetes access controls bound every call an AI agent makes through the SKE MCP server, and secrets stay off limits.

See it run. Watch a live install of SKE and a tour of Stratum Pro in the product overview webinar.

Verify every release before you install it

Your security reviewer can check each SKE release before you install it. Every release ships with a keyless cosign signature, an SPDX software bill of materials (SBOM) for each architecture, and a provenance file. Your reviewer verifies the signature, reads the component list in the SBOM, and confirms from the provenance file where the build came from.

See every SKE cluster in one web interface with Stratum Pro

When a GPU cluster for AI work arrives with its own tools, you end up managing your clusters in two places. Stratum Pro, the commercial version built on SKE, adds fleet management.

Stratum Pro shows your GPU clusters and your general fleet in one web interface, with sign-in through the identity provider you already use. Groups in your identity provider map to admin and viewer roles. Each cluster's fleet agent connects outbound only, so you open no inbound ports to bring a cluster into the fleet. Stratum Pro manages SKE clusters. You can also add another Kubernetes cluster to the same web interface by giving Stratum Pro a kubeconfig for it, with no agent to install.

Keep the Enterprise Linux you already run

SKE runs on any Enterprise Linux 9 or later distribution, on amd64 and arm64. That includes Rocky Linux, RLC Pro AI, and RLC Pro Hardened, so you keep the operating system you already trust on your Kubernetes nodes.

If you use other parts of the CIQ stack, SKE works alongside them: Warewulf Pro provisions the nodes, Fuzzball runs HPC and AI workflows, and Ascender Pro runs your automation. Each product also runs on its own, and you choose which ones to use.

To start, download SKE and run stratum up on an Enterprise Linux 9 host.

NTT, Inc.

Key Points

Tokyo, Japan, October 23, 2026 — NTT, Inc. ("NTT") today announced the development of technology that transforms existing software assets into a form that AI can understand and use.

Although generative AI is improving development efficiency, enhancement work on existing systems continues to face challenges such as outdated documentation, inconsistencies between documentation and code, and insufficient testing. The new technology analyzes dependencies among system specifications, design documents, code, and tests to detect and address inconsistencies and omissions. It also systematically identifies missing test perspectives and cases and generates the tests needed to fill those gaps. In preliminary experiments, the technology detected 80% of inconsistencies and identified three previously unknown latent bugs. By converting existing software assets into a form that AI can understand and use, the technology enables generative AI to support the understanding, modification, and verification of existing systems consistently. NTT will apply the technology to actual software development and maintenance projects, aiming to put into practical use a technology that supports the transition to AI-Native development.

Figure 1. Challenges in enhancing existing systems

Figure 2. Overview of the initiative

Generative AI is increasingly improving software development efficiency, but its use has largely focused on greenfield development, in which software is built from scratch. Approximately 60%[2] of software development, however, involves enhancing, maintaining, or redeveloping existing systems. Productivity gains from generative AI-assisted development are therefore also needed in this area.

In long-running systems, repeated modifications can cause design documentation to diverge from the actual code. As a result, developers must spend substantial time determining what to change and whether a modification will affect other functions. Under these conditions, generative AI also has difficulty accurately understanding system structures and specifications. In addition, when tests for existing functions are insufficient or not automated, verifying the impact of changes and explaining quality based on the results require significant effort. These issues place a major burden on developers responsible for enhancing existing systems.

NTT has developed two technologies to transform existing software assets, including specifications, design documents, code, and tests, into an AI-Ready[3] state that AI can understand and use.

The first is traceability analysis technology[4], which automatically organizes relationships among specifications, design documents, and code, then detects and addresses inconsistencies and omissions across development phases. The second is comprehensive automated test generation technology, which identifies perspectives not covered by existing tests and generates additional tests to fill the gaps.

Together, these technologies enable AI to understand the structure and specifications of existing systems and establish an environment for verifying the impact of changes on existing functions, supporting a future transition to AI-Native development.

Based on international standards and guidelines, including ISO guidance on requirements engineering, this technology automatically structures the composition of and relationships among development artifacts. In existing systems, information is distributed across records of development intent, such as meeting logs, as well as specifications, design documents, code, and test cases. For AI to understand this information correctly, each artifact must be organized into meaningful units, such as individual functions, and the connections among them must be made explicit.

Because the format and amount of information vary among documents, simple segmentation cannot properly capture functional units. The technology evaluates how strongly each passage relates to a particular function and dynamically adjusts the segmentation granularity according to the content, preserving meaning while dividing artifacts into functional units.

Even when specifications, design descriptions, and code address the same function, differences in information volume and expression make accurate mapping difficult. The technology reconstructs downstream information based on key points from upstream phases, aligns information volume and granularity, and then determines dependencies. This approach enables highly accurate identification of omissions and inconsistencies across development phases.

The technology converts large volumes of differently formatted artifacts into traceability information that enables AI to understand system structures and design intent.

Figure 3. Overview of the traceability analysis technology

Existing systems accumulate large numbers of tests over many years of development, but it is difficult to understand comprehensively which functions and conditions each test covers and whether important perspectives are missing. Complex dependencies among functions also mean that a change in one area can unexpectedly affect existing functionality. Manually retesting all existing functions requires substantial time and cost.

Using mutually consistent specifications, designs, and code, together with ISO quality characteristics, the technology builds a test perspective space that organizes which system functions must be verified and from which perspectives. Mapping accumulated tests to this space visualizes both covered areas and areas where testing is insufficient. This process specifically identifies inadequately verified perspectives, including abnormal conditions, boundary values, combinations of multiple conditions, and behavior during interactions among functions, which tend to receive less coverage than normal conditions. The technology then systematically fills the gaps using testing techniques[5] such as decision tables, generating automatically executable tests that cover the impact of changes while making use of existing test assets.

Figure 4. Overview of the comprehensive automated test generation technology

NTT evaluated the two technologies in preliminary experiments using documentation and code prepared for ATRS[6], a sample application of the Macchinetta Framework.

The evaluation examined whether the technology could detect 41 errors intentionally embedded in design documents, including contradictions with specifications or code and missing information. The conventional method, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)[7], detected 11 errors, or 27%, while the proposed method detected 33 errors, or 80%. Previous research on software reviews reported an average defect detection rate of 68%[8]. Although the evaluation targets and conditions differ and do not permit a direct comparison, the 80% detection rate in this experiment exceeded that reported level.

This result is attributed to structuring the relationships among specifications, designs, code, and other artifacts as traceability information and checking their consistency against the expected relationships, rather than only searching for and referring to relevant documents as in conventional RAG. The technology thus detected cross-phase inconsistencies and deviations from design intent that are difficult to identify by reviewing individual documents alone.

* You can scroll horizontally

Table 1. Detection of errors embedded in design documents (41 errors)

In an evaluation involving six intentionally embedded bugs[9], the technology detected four, or 67%. It also identified three latent bugs that had not been intentionally embedded. These latent bugs were found in areas where tests for input validation and error messages did not provide sufficient coverage. By contrast, none of these bugs was detected when generative AI generated tests directly from specifications and other documents.

This result is attributed to systematically organizing test perspectives based on ISO quality characteristics and applying suitable testing techniques to each perspective, rather than leaving test generation entirely to generative AI. The approach generated tests with broad coverage and enabled verification from a wide range of perspectives while reducing gaps in test coverage.

NTT will evaluate the technologies on existing systems of various sizes and characteristics, expand the range of supported artifacts and programming languages, enhance the extraction and supplementation of tacit knowledge, and broaden the quality perspectives and testing techniques covered. NTT will also apply the technologies to actual software development and maintenance projects to verify the effectiveness of integrating generative AI across the entire process, from system understanding and impact analysis to modification, test generation, and test execution. Through these efforts, NTT aims to keep existing systems in a state that AI can continuously understand and use, contributing to the adoption of AI-Native approaches throughout software development and maintenance.

[1]AI-Native development: An approach that places AI at the center of development and optimizes the development environment so that AI can perform to its full potential.

[2]Share of enhancement development: Based on Software Development Data Analysis Collection 2022. The approximately 60% figure in the text is based on this source.

[3]AI-Ready: A state in which existing software assets are organized so that AI can understand and use an existing system.

[4]Traceability: A state in which relationships among requirements, design, implementation, and testing are clarified, enabling consistency and completeness to be checked and the impact of changes to be tracked.

NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS Named as a Runner-Up in Gartner® Eye on Innovation Awards 2026 for docomo business ANCAR® Service

Follows docomo business RINK® in 2025 as Second Service to Be Recognized for Industry-Leading Innovation

TOKYO, Oct. 27, 2026 — NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS, Inc. is pleased to announce that its AI-native SaaS-based communication service “docomo business ANCAR” has been recognized as a Runner-Up, directly behind the Winner, for its industry-leading innovation, in the Communications Service Providers (CSPs) category for the Asia-Pacific region of the U.S.-based Gartner Eye on Innovation Awards 2026.

Last year, NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS became the first Japan-based company to be selected as the Winner2 for docomo business RINK, a network as a service (NaaS)1 solution that integrates comprehensive security and network functionality. With this latest selection, NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS has been honored at the Eye on Innovation Awards for two consecutive years.

1.NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS’s Initiatives and Key Service Features

docomo business ANCAR is a SaaS-based communications service that converges telecommunications carrier infrastructure with AI to enhance and optimize various corporate customer touchpoints, including contact centers, branch offices, and retail stores.

1.1 Development Background

Enterprises in Japan are facing chronic labor shortages due to an aging and shrinking workforce, as well as operational challenges such as inconsistent service quality and the need to address customer harassment. As a result, businesses are in greater need of sophisticated, AI-enabled customer interaction capabilities. However, traditional implementations have typically relied on customized deployments for each system, leading to higher costs and longer delivery timelines. Consequently, access to advanced AI capabilities is often limited to enterprises with extensive IT budgets.

1.2 Value Provided to Customers

The service seamlessly fuses carrier-grade voice service infrastructure with AI to deliver an integrated, SaaS-based communication platform. The service ensures responsive customer service, eliminating wait times and confusion. It also alleviates employee workloads and drives continuous operational improvements and business growth rooted in the voice of the customer.

In addition to intelligent call routing tailored to callers’ needs, 24/7 AI-driven automated responses, and call recording to mitigate customer abuse and improve operational efficiency, the service provides an end-to-end suite that spans touchpoint data analysis and actionable improvement recommendations. This enables enterprises to streamline not only customer support but also to comprehensively enhance Customer Experience (CX) and Employee Experience (EX), driving data-informed business transformation and sustainable growth.

Leveraging DOCOMO’s unique strengths as a telecommunications carrier, the service delivers the following core benefits:

- Reliable, Always-Connected Customer Touchpoints:The service ensures the seamless continuity of automated customer responses by embedding AI directly into the carrier network. This feature works even during sudden call volume spikes or customer-premises equipment failures. Also, uninterrupted customer contact mitigates missed business opportunities and strengthens customer satisfaction.

- Rapid, Cost-Effective Deployment:The service can be added directly into existing voice services without requiring new on-premises hardware or large-scale systems integration, allowing enterprises to begin using the service quickly and cost-effectively. Advanced AI functionality, which previously required substantial capital investment, can now be deployed and expanded incrementally by organizations of any size.

- Harnessing Touchpoint Data for Operational Improvement and Business Growth:The service visualizes and analyzes call data, including pre-connection insights, to identify inquiry trends and customer service bottlenecks. This drives enhanced service quality and business process optimization. Furthermore, by uncovering actionable insights across integrated omnichannel touchpoint data, the service empowers companies to refine products and services and enhance marketing strategies, fueling ongoing business growth.

1.3 Outcomes

The deployment of this service has produced the following operational results:

- Contact Center Routing Efficiency:At NTT Group contact centers, long, multi-tiered Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and transfer delays caused by misdialed menu options were persistent challenges. Implementing docomo business ANCAR Routing enables callers to state their inquiries in natural language, which allows the AI to route calls to appropriate departments with approximately 80% accuracy (up from less than 70% previously) while reducing time-to-connection by 30%.

- Rapid Multi-Site Retail Rollout:Deploying call recording and AI-driven summarization across retail stores nationwide previously required weeks of on-site configuration and setup per location. However, by utilizing docomo business ANCAR Rec, Convert, and Summarize, this process is reduced to minutes, enabling a rapid nationwide rollout while significantly reducing employee workloads.

2.Outlook

Drawing upon its technological expertise and know-how cultivated through enterprise voice and contact center services, NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS will continue to evolve docomo business ANCAR. Looking ahead, the company will pursue the development of autonomous AI agents that can handle end-to-end customer interactions, such as inquiries and appointment bookings, starting directly from existing telephone numbers, ultimately to enhance CX and EX while driving sustainable business growth.
