MQTT Timestamps: Source Time vs. Ingestion Time in Industrial Data
Original HTML

An MQTT message can arrive at the broker or historian long after the physical measurement occurred. If that arrival time becomes the historian timestamp, a trend may show an old pressure reading as a new process condition. During an outage replay, that can distort aggregates, alarms, and the apparent order of events.

The timestamp policy should answer one question clearly: When did this industrial observation represent the process? For most time-series analysis, that is the source event time. Ingestion time remains valuable, but it describes transport and processing chronology rather than the process itself.

MQTT does not supply a universal process-time field

Plain MQTT defines the transport of an application message. It does not prescribe a JSON field called timestamp, an industrial clock model, or the meaning of a time value inside a payload. The publisher and its application contract decide whether a payload contains a time, its format, and its quality.

Do not transfer OPC UA timestamp names to ordinary MQTT payloads. OPC UA has defined SourceTimestamp and ServerTimestamp concepts; a plain MQTT publication has only the fields its publisher supplies. A broker receipt time and a connector receipt time are useful operational observations, but they are not automatically evidence of when a machine produced a measurement.

Consider this illustrative payload:

{

"asset_id": "compressor-12",

"event_time": "2026-10-27T08:15:04.125Z",

"discharge_pressure_kpa": 742.6

}

event_time may be the right historical time if the gateway defines it as the observation time and its clock is trustworthy. A field named ts is not enough by itself. Its unit, timezone, source, and behavior during restart still need to be agreed and tested.

Keep source, broker, and ingestion time separate

Three different clocks can appear in one path:

Choose source event time as the record time when the application needs a truthful process chronology and the source can supply a valid value. Preserve an ingestion or receipt time separately when the system needs to explain delay. This lets an engineer distinguish a late delivery from a late event.

There are valid exceptions. A simple device may not have a reliable clock, an upstream payload may carry only a sequence number, or a protocol gateway may sample data without an event timestamp. In that case, use a clearly documented collection or ingestion time rather than inventing a source time. The resulting record is still useful, but downstream users must know it represents observation by the collector, not necessarily the exact process instant.

Validate clock, timezone, precision, and epoch unit

Timestamp errors are often plausible enough to escape a connection test. Build validation into the source-data contract:

- Require an unambiguous timezone convention, preferably an ISO 8601 value with Z or an explicit offset.

- For integer epochs, state whether the value is seconds, milliseconds, microseconds, or nanoseconds; do not infer the unit from the digit count alone.

- Define acceptable future skew and stale-data limits for each source class.

- Monitor source-clock health and resynchronize gateways after replacement, reboot, or loss of time service.

- Decide how to handle null, malformed, or out-of-range time: reject, archive, flag, or use arrival time under an explicit policy.

For TDengine, the timestamp is the primary key for time-series data. Its database precision determines how integer timestamps are interpreted, and the default precision is milliseconds. The current TDengine data types and precision documentation should therefore be checked against the target database before mapping a numeric time field. Do not assume that a millisecond payload can be safely interpreted as microseconds or nanoseconds merely because a connector accepts it.

Design for late, replayed, and out-of-order records

Network interruption, local buffering, broker queues, and retry can delay a message. The later arrival does not make the measurement newer. Store source event time as the historical axis when it is valid, then configure queries, downstream windows, and alerts to tolerate late arrivals where the use case requires it.

Out-of-order arrival is normal in a distributed path. A live message can reach the historian while an older message is still waiting in a buffer. A query sorted by event time can show the process correctly; an operational view based on ingestion order can expose the backlog. Do not use one timestamp to answer both questions without declaring the compromise.

Duplicates also interact with time. A retransmitted message can have the same source time as the original. If a source provides a stable sequence number or event identifier, retain it for validation and define the duplicate policy. MQTT QoS or broker receipt does not validate either the source clock or the business meaning of the time field.

Test the timestamp policy with controlled late data

Run a test that deliberately separates source time from delivery time:

- Publish a small series with known event times and a source identifier.

- Delay one message, then deliver it after a newer measurement.

- Replay a previously sent message and include an intentionally malformed or wrong-unit timestamp.

- Query by event time and inspect the arrival or ingestion evidence separately.

- Confirm the expected handling for duplicates, null time, stale data, and future time.

The pass condition is not simply that every message produced a row. It is that the historian explains process sequence accurately, exposes transport delay when needed, and handles invalid time according to an agreed rule.

Make timestamp meaning part of the data contract

Document each measurement class with its time owner, format, precision, timezone, allowable clock drift, fallback behavior, and any additional arrival-time field. Review the contract when a PLC, edge gateway, firmware version, or broker route changes.

That discipline makes a time-series database more useful for investigations and analysis: stored values retain a defensible relationship to the process that produced them. Without it, a technically successful MQTT pipeline can still create misleading history.

KfW Research: Unternehmen kommen wieder etwas leichter an Kredite

7. Frühe Geschmackserfahrungen (2002)

Liem DG, Mennella JA. Sweet and sour preferences during childhood: role of early experiences. Dev Psychobiol. 2002;41(4):388-395. doi:10.1002/dev.10067.

White flag installations across the country, including 60,000 flags on the National Mall, honor lives lost and mobilize action on lung cancer screening, research, and access to care

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- This November, LUNGevity Foundation will launch Every Breath Forwardâ , a nationwide movement to honor those lost to lung cancer and unite communities in advancing progress and improving lives. During Lung Cancer Awareness Month, white flag installations across the country will bring people together to support those affected by the disease and take action against the nation's leading cause of cancer death.

Displays in Washington, DC, and cities nationwide will recognize advances in care and call for sustained investment in research, greater access to lung cancer screening, and treatment that reaches everyone who needs it.

The campaign's centerpiece is an installation of 60,000 white flags on the National Mall on November 1. Volunteers will plant the flags, and a Survivor Rally will honor survivors and call for greater awareness and research. Each flag represents two of the more than 120,000 people who die from lung cancer in the United States each year.

Advances in early detection, precision medicine, and treatment are helping people with lung cancer live longer and better. Every Breath Forward calls for increased investment so that more people can benefit from this progress.

"Every flag honors a person who was loved and a family whose life has been changed by lung cancer," said Andrea Ferris, President and CEO of LUNGevity Foundation. "Progress in early detection and treatment gives us real reason for hope and a clear responsibility to build on it. Every Breath Forward gives people everywhere a way to honor those we have lost, stand with those living with lung cancer, and help secure the research and access to care needed to save more lives."

From the National Mall to Communities Across the Country

LUNGevity will host a press conference on the National Mall on November 10 at 10 a.m., bringing together policymakers, survivors, advocates, researchers, and healthcare experts. Participants will call for sustained federal research funding, expanded access to lung cancer screening and early detection, and equitable access to advances in care.

Additional public flag installations are planned in:

- Denver, Colorado, in partnership with The White Ribbon Project and CU Anschutz Cancer Center: November 1

- Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in partnership with the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI): November 5

- Jackson, Mississippi, in partnership with the Mississippi Lung Cancer Roundtable: November 6

- Tampa, Florida, in partnership with Moffitt Cancer Center: November 7

- Raleigh, North Carolina, in partnership with the Lung Cancer Initiative: November 8

- Boston, Massachusetts: November 11

- San Francisco, California, in partnership with GO2 for Lung Cancer: November 14

More than 80 chapters of the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI) will also plant flags on college campuses and in communities nationwide, bringing the movement to more people and encouraging conversations about early detection.

"Screening can help find lung cancer earlier, when treatment may be more effective," said Timothy Hwang, Executive Director, American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative. "Our chapters are using these displays to help people understand who may be eligible for screening and encourage them to discuss it with family members and healthcare professionals."

A Movement Anyone Can Join

Throughout November, people across the country can take part in Every Breath Forward wherever they live.

Individuals and families will plant their own Every Breath Forward displays in yards, neighborhoods, workplaces, and communities to honor loved ones and show support for people affected by lung cancer.

People can make a virtual dedication in honor or memory of someone affected by lung cancer, volunteer at a participating city installation, visit a display, or share photos and stories on social media. Inviting friends, family, and colleagues to participate will help bring the movement to more communities.

Each dedication, display, and act of participation helps honor lives, strengthen support for the lung cancer community, and build public commitment to continued progress.

Every Breath Forward is made possible with support from Presenting Sponsor Boehringer Ingelheim; Platinum Sponsors AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson; Gold Sponsor Amgen; and Silver Sponsors Daiichi Sankyo, Genentech, Lilly, Merck, Nuvalent, Regeneron, and Takeda.

To find an installation, volunteer, make a virtual dedication, or explore other ways to participate, visit EveryBreathForward.org.

About Lung Cancer in the US

- About 1 in 19 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime.

- More than 229,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, with a new diagnosis every 2.3 minutes.

- It is estimated that close to 65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people with no tobacco exposure or only past tobacco exposure.

- More lives are lost to lung cancer than to the next two deadliest cancers (colorectal and pancreatic) combined.

- Only 29.5% of all people diagnosed with lung cancer will survive 5 years or more, but if it's caught before it spreads, the chance of 5-year survival improves to 65%.

All in Print China 2026 Concludes Successfully as Ruizhi Machinery Showcases Three New Machines

WENZHOU, China, Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The five-day All in Print China 2026 exhibition came to a successful close at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. At Booth N3A213, Ruizhi Machinery showcased three new paper bag making machinesâCS350T, CS450T, and RZFD-250ASâhighlighting high-speed production, rapid size changeovers, and automatic stacking and bundling. The exhibition also provided an opportunity to exchange insights with industry professionals on production efficiency, automation, and evolving packaging needs.

CS350T: High-Speed Production with Rapid Size Changeovers

Designed for high-volume production, the CS350T reaches speeds of up to 300 bags per minute and supports one-click automatic size changeovers in just 15 minutes. Its multi-servo control system, German LENZE motion controller and servo system, and SICK photoelectric tracking technology support stable operation and precise bag forming at high speeds.

CS450T: Large-Format Bag Production with Flexible Size Changeovers

The CS450T produces large-format paper bags with handles, with a maximum bag bottom width of 260 mm and speeds of up to 150 bags per minute. Its 25-minute size changeovers help manufacturers handle multiple specifications and small-batch orders while reducing manual adjustments and production downtime.

RZFD-250AS: Integrated Visual Inspection, Automatic Stacking, and Bundling

The RZFD-250AS combines paper bag making with visual inspection, automatic stacking, and bundling. Its inspection system identifies and rejects defective bags, while bags that pass inspection are automatically stacked and bundled, reducing manual handling and improving downstream efficiency.

Advancing Paper Bag Manufacturing Through Innovation

At this year's exhibition, the three machines demonstrated how Ruizhi Machinery addresses different production requirements. The CS350T combines high-speed output with one-click size changeovers to improve mass production efficiency. The CS450T offers large-format bag manufacturing capabilities and rapid size changeovers to accommodate diverse orders. Meanwhile, the RZFD-250AS reduces manual labor in downstream operations through automatic defect rejection, stacking, and bundling. Together, these machines offer manufacturers a wider range of production options while supporting material compatibility, operational stability, and consistent bag quality.

Although All in Print China 2026 has come to an end, Ruizhi Machinery remains committed to technological innovation. Through the exhibition, the company strengthened its connections with global packaging industry partners and gained valuable insights into evolving market demands. Moving forward, Ruizhi Machinery will continue to optimize machine performance and advance automation technologies, delivering more stable, efficient, and flexible paper bag manufacturing solutions to support the sustainable development of the packaging industry.

Meritus Health goes live with Sectra One Cloud to streamline radiology workflows and speed up diagnostics

News provided by

Sectra

Oct 29, 2026, 04:23 ET

LINKÃPING, Sweden, October 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- International medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra (STO: SECT B) announces that Meritus Health has gone live with Sectra's enterprise imaging solution as a cloud service, Sectra One Cloud, initially utilizing the module for radiology. The solution enables radiologists to work in a single application throughout the whole workflow, supporting faster diagnostics for the patients and communities Meritus Health serves.

"Imaging demand at Meritus Health continues to grow, and our radiologists need to work through it without compromising care. With Sectra One Cloud in daily operation, they have images, prior exams, and diagnostic tools in one place, which means a comprehensive view of the patient and an ability to move quickly," says Mike Fried, Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Meritus Health.

Meritus Health is a healthcare provider in Western Maryland, serving more than 200,000 residents across the tristate area of Western Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania, and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. This go-live marks the health system's first deployment of Sectra technology. As a fully managed cloud service, Sectra One Cloud takes responsibility for infrastructure, maintenance, and upgrades, easing the workload on Meritus Health's IT team while strengthening security, protecting patient privacy, and enabling the scalability needed to support growing imaging volumes and future imaging specialties.

The go-live follows a five-year contract signed in the fourth quarter of Sectra's 2025/2026 fiscal year, with an expected volume of approximately 257,000 radiology exams per year.

"Meritus Health's decision to run imaging as a cloud service reflects what we see from health systems we work with: they need imaging infrastructure that's secure and dependable, so their teams can spend less time worrying about systems and more time with patients. Sectra One Cloud gives Meritus Health a scalable base to grow imaging services as the region's needs increase," says Isaac Zaworski, President of Sectra Inc.

Sectra's enterprise imaging solution provides a unified strategy for all imaging needs while lowering operational costs. The scalable and modular solution, with a VNA at its core, allows healthcare providers to grow from ology to ology and from enterprise to enterprise. Visit Sectra's website to read more about Sectra and why it's top-ranked in "Best in KLAS".
