Global Times: China's innovation success is real global news, landing in the living rooms of Italian retirees who barely use a smartphone: Italian scientist

BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Ahead of the opening of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, Chinese AI start-up Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 large language model. As the world's largest open-source model by parameter count to date, this launch marks a significant step forward in the development of China's artificial intelligence models.

From the C919 airliner soaring into the skies to Unitree's humanoid robots stealing the show; from DeepSeek pushing the AI frontier to Moonshot AI's landmark unveiling of Kimi K3 - China's wave of homegrown innovations has dominated global headlines in recent years, delivering a steady stream of breakthroughs.

At a meeting in Beijing that brought together the national science and technology award conference, the general assemblies of the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and the 11th national congress of the China Association for Science and Technology in July, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed that the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030) is a critical phase for tackling tough challenges in building up the country's strength in science and technology.

"We must seize the historic opportunity, rise to the challenges of the times, accelerate efforts to achieve high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and make steady progress toward the 2035 goal of becoming a leading country in science and technology," he said.

In the article "Strive for Greater Strength and Self-Reliance in Science and Technology" included in the fourth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, Xi pointed out, "Through years of endeavor, our country's overall strength in science and technology has improved substantially. We therefore have a solid foundation, and are fully confident in our ability to seize the opportunities offered by the new revolution in science, technology and industry to achieve greater results." The article also mentioned that "We should participate to the full in global science and technology governance, contribute Chinese wisdom, and shape a philosophy of technology for good purposes, so that science and technology better serve human wellbeing, and enable China's science and technology industry to contribute more to building a global community of shared future."

In the 27th installment of the special series "Decoding the Book Xi Jinping: The Governance of China," the Global Times, along with the People's Daily Overseas Edition, continues to invite Chinese and foreign scholars, translators of Xi's works, practitioners with firsthand experience, and international readers to focus on the theme of striving for greater strength and self-reliance in science and technology. Together, they share views on China's tech growth, governance principles, and global cooperation in science and technology.

In the 27th article of the "Readers' Reflections" column, Global Times (GT) talked to Francesco Faiola (Faiola), an Italian professor at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences with Chinese Academy of Sciences and recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award.

GT: Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance on July 17. He said that as a responsible major country, China is always committed to providing international public goods relating to AI. In the article "Boost Basic Research and Achieve Greater Strength and Self-Reliance in Science and Technology" included in the fifth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, Xi said, "It is important that we adopt a more open-minded approach to international exchange and cooperation in research to create an open, globally competitive innovation ecosystem." Amid the current complex global landscape, China remains firmly committed to keeping its doors open to international scientific collaboration. In your view, where does China's confidence in this commitment come from?

Faiola: I think China's confidence in staying open comes from a deep shift in mindset. The Chinese people, especially the scientific community, now really believe they are not inferior to Westerners. For a long time, even many people here thought top science had to happen at a Western address. When I first came, I believed that too. The US and Europe seemed like the only serious places for breakthroughs. Now that idea is changing, and moving toward China, because the evidence of leadership is everywhere: stem cell standards, artificial intelligence (AI) efficiency, green manufacturing. It's undeniable. China knows it has everything needed to attract and keep international talent. It's no longer a developing country playing catch up. It's a place that's helping set the global agenda.

That self-assurance is the bedrock of openness. When you truly believe you have unique strengths, like a huge organoid screening capability or a community of scientists who think deeply, you don't fear open doors. You want colleagues from everywhere to walk through so the science moves faster. My own lab works with European centers as equals. That parity is real. But we also know not everyone abroad gets this transformation yet. A lot of people still imagine Chinese science as just following others. That's exactly why China is pushing openness harder: funding lines for foreign principal investigators, open innovation hubs in Beijing, active participation in setting international standards. These aren't defensive moves. They're proof of a country confident enough to invite the world in, show what it can do, and create knowledge together.

On a deeper level, the confidence is also just rational. The big challenges - environmental problem, pandemic preparedness and precision medicine - are global. If China closed itself off, the data and validation its own regulators need would get weaker. So, the open door isn't charity. It's the smart recognition that scientific greatness today gets multiplied when you share it.

GT: In the article "Strive for Greater Strength and Self-Reliance in Science and Technology" included in the fourth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, Xi pointed out, "Through years of endeavor, our country's overall strength in science and technology has improved substantially. We therefore have a solid foundation, and are fully confident in our ability to seize the opportunities offered by the new revolution in science, technology and industry to achieve greater results." From the domestically built large passenger jet to DeepSeek, Unitree Robotics, and Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, China's innovation achievements have been making headlines. How do you assess China's achievements in sci-tech innovation in recent years?

Faiola: I measure China's innovation success in a very personal way. My parents are old, living in a small Italian town. They don't speak English. They don't understand molecular biology. They can't read a scientific paper. But over the past few years, they've called me up more than once, excited, telling me about a Chinese airplane or a humanoid robot or some AI breakthrough they saw on Italy's main TV news or in the newspapers.

That tells me something deep. These aren't niche stories for tech insiders. They are real global news, landing in the living rooms of retirees who barely use a smartphone. I'm not bragging to them about China's progress. They are telling me. When achievements get that far into everyday European life, it's a sign China is doing something the world finds worth talking about.

The C919 plane, DeepSeek, Unitree Robotics - these aren't one-off hits. They prove China can now conceive, design, and build complex, original systems on its own, whether it's an airliner, an advanced AI model, or an agile robot. That takes deep integration across different fields, aerodynamics, materials, real time control, and AI.

DeepSeek's whole philosophy, doing more with less, is exactly how we created affordable organoid screening tools. And the quiet shift from rule taker to rule maker in chemical safety standards, that mirrors the C919's ambition to compete globally on certification. All this shows China is blending manufacturing, digital smarts, and biology into one force. But my real proof is what I hear from my students. They don't just apply discoveries from papers anymore. They question the assumptions behind them. That intellectual confidence, and the fact it echoes all the way back to a small Italian town, is why I'm sure China will fully seize this moment.

GT: President Xi said that AI development should not be a solo performance by a single country, but a symphony of international cooperation. Having conducted research in China for many years, you are not only a witness but also a driving force behind China-Europe scientific exchanges. Looking ahead, how can both sides deepen complementary advantages and achieve mutually beneficial empowerment to jointly address global challenges such as climate change and health? Over the next five years, which specific sectors should China-Europe science and technology collaboration prioritize?

Faiola: I grew up in Italy and now I lead a lab in Beijing while working with colleagues all over Europe. So, China-Europe teamwork isn't some abstract idea to me. It's how my week actually looks. The old cliché, European basic research plus Chinese scale and speed, is already outdated. Both sides now generate novel insights. The relationship has to become genuine two-way cocreation.

I see three practical things that would deepen it.

NEW YORK, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ --

Why: Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, reminds purchasers of securities of Blaize Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: BZAI) between July 18, 2025 and April 28, 2026, both dates inclusive (the "Class Period"), of the important October 5, 2026 lead plaintiff deadline in the securities class action first filed by the Firm.

So what: If you purchased Blaize securities during the Class Period you may be entitled to compensation without payment of any out of pocket fees or costs through a contingency fee arrangement.

What to do next: To join the Blaize class action, go to https://rosenlegal.com/cases/blaize-holdings-inc/join or call Phillip Kim, Esq. toll-free at 866-767-3653 or email [email protected] for information on the class action. A class action lawsuit has already been filed. If you wish to serve as lead plaintiff, you must move the Court no later than October 5, 2026. A lead plaintiff is a representative party acting on behalf of other class members in directing the litigation.

Why Rosen Law: We encourage investors to select qualified counsel with a track record of success in leadership roles. Often, firms issuing notices do not have comparable experience, resources, or any meaningful peer recognition. Many of these firms do not actually handle securities class actions, but are merely middlemen that refer clients or partner with law firms that actually litigate the cases. Be wise in selecting counsel. The Rosen Law Firm represents investors throughout the globe, concentrating its practice in securities class actions and shareholder derivative litigation. Rosen Law Firm has achieved the largest ever securities class action settlement against a Chinese Company. Rosen Law Firm was Ranked No. 1 by ISS Securities Class Action Services for number of securities class action settlements in 2017. The firm has been ranked in the top 4 each year since 2013 and has recovered billions of dollars for investors. In 2019 alone the firm secured over $438 million for investors. In 2020, founding partner Laurence Rosen was named by law360 as a Titan of Plaintiffs' Bar. Many of the firm's attorneys have been recognized by Lawdragon and Super Lawyers.

Details of the case: According to the lawsuit, defendants made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (1) Blaize announced transactions with entities wholly unequipped to conduct meaningful business in order to create an appearance of growth; (2) Blaize improperly recognized revenue; and (3) as a result, defendants' public statements were materially false and/or misleading at all relevant times. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages.

To join the Blaize class action, go to https://rosenlegal.com/cases/blaize-holdings-inc/join or call Phillip Kim, Esq. toll-free at 866-767-3653 or email [email protected] for information on the class action.

No Class Has Been Certified. Until a class is certified, you are not represented by counsel unless you retain one. You may select counsel of your choice. You may also remain an absent class member and do nothing at this point. An investor's ability to share in any potential future recovery is not dependent upon serving as lead plaintiff.

The FTC further alleged that the Company fails to "clearly disclose that it charges consumers for prescriptions almost immediately after they submit an intake form, despite telling consumers that they will be able to consult with a medical provider to find a treatment that is 'right for them.'"

On this news, the price of Hims & Hers Health shares fell $4.32, or 14.73%, to close at $25.00 on July 29, 2026, on unusually heavy trading volume.

About the Lawsuit

Simply Good and certain of its executives are charged with failing to disclose material information during the Class Period, violating federal securities laws.

On October 23, 2025, the Company announced its Q4 and YE August 30, 2025 financial results, disclosing that its OWYN (Only What You Need, Inc.) segment, acquired in 2024 for $280 million, had suffered a slowdown in sales growth due to a previously undisclosed product quality issue, specifically, that "a raw material sourcing decision for pea protein," which predated the close of the OWYN acquisition but was implemented shortly thereafter, had "resulted in taste and texture issues" as the products aged, leading to negative product ratings and reviews and depressed sales for OWYN. The Company also disclosed disappointing 2026 net sales guidance in the range of negative 2% to positive 2%, a decline in the rate of growth of at least 75% from the 9% net sales growth it had reported for fiscal 2025. On this news, the price of Simply Good shares fell more than 17%.

Then, on April 9, 2026, the Company announced its Q2 2026 earnings results, disclosing that OWYN's quarterly sales had contracted by nearly 17% year-over-year, as well as a $187 million impairment charge against its OWYN brand intangible assets and reduction of 2026 net sales outlook to a range of negative 7% to negative 10%. On this news, the price of Simply Good shares fell more than 27% over a two-day trading period.

The case is Monroe County Employees' Retirement System v. The Simply Good Foods Company, No. 26-cv-06971.

NEW YORK CITY and NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Attorney General of Louisiana, Charles C. Foti, Jr., Esq., a partner at the law firm of Kahn Swick & Foti, LLC ("KSF"), announces that KSF has commenced an investigation into PayPal Holdings, Inc. ("PayPal" or the "Company") (NasdaqGS: PYPL).

Throughout 2025, the Company provided overwhelmingly positive statements to investors touting confidence in its ability to capitalize on new initiatives to drive Branded Checkout growth both in the U.S. and internationally. However, on February 3, 2026, the Company announced its financial results for the fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2025, disclosing disappointing earnings with worsening performance in Branded Checkout as well as the sudden and surprising departure of its Chief Executive Officer. The Company further withdrew its 2027 financial targets provided one year earlier and announced projections that suggested a slowdown relative to those prior targets, which it attributed to a combination of macroeconomic factors, competition, and "operational and deployment issues" across all regions.

Thereafter, the Company and certain of its executives were sued in a securities class action lawsuit, charging them with failing to disclose material information during the Class Period in violation of federal securities laws, which remains ongoing.

KSF's investigation is focusing on whether PayPal's officers and/or directors breached their fiduciary duties to its shareholders or otherwise violated state or federal laws.

If you have information that would assist KSF in its investigation, or have been a long-term holder of PayPal shares and would like to discuss your legal rights, you may, without obligation or cost to you, call toll-free at 1-833-538-3666 or email KSF Managing Partner Lewis Kahn ([email protected]), or visit https://www.ksfcounsel.com/cases/nasdaqgs-pypl/ to learn more.

On October 20, 2025, Replimune announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") had accepted the resubmission of the Biologics License Application ("BLA") for RP1 in combination with nivolumab for the treatment of advanced melanoma in patients who progress on an anti-PD-1 containing regimen. The Company claimed that "[a]dditional information, data and analyses were included in the resubmission which will be part of the BLA review." The Company also stated that "[t]he FDA indicated this resubmission is considered to be a complete response to the complete response letter received in July 2025."

The complaint alleges that defendants failed to disclose to investors:

(1) that in connection with the BLA, the study design concerns previously communicated by the FDA were not addressed;

(2) that the Company had submitted data from an early unplanned analysis from RP1-104, which included only 40 patients (10% of the planned enrollment of 400 patients);

(3) that, as a result, RPL-001-16 and RP1-104 both had deficiencies that were likely to cause the FDA to reject the BLA; and

(4) that, as a result, defendants' positive statements about the Company's business, operations, and prospects were materially misleading and/or lacked a reasonable basis.

Why Did REPL Stock Drop?

The complaint alleges that on April 10, 2026, during market trading, the FDA published a Complete Response Letter ("CRL") rejecting Replimune's BLA for RP1 in combination with nivolumab. The FDA identified several deficiencies for each of the studies—RPL-001-16 (IGNYTE) and RP1-104 (IGNYTE-3)—submitted by Replimune and found that "the evidence as presented does not meet the evidentiary standards required for regulatory approval, and the results of the additional exploratory analyses of the RPL-001-16 data do not alter our initial conclusion that the RPL-001-16 trial is not an adequate and well-controlled clinical investigation that demonstrates substantial evidence of effectiveness."

The FDA further revealed that "[t]o support resubmission of the BLA on October 9, 2025, [Replimune] provided [objective response rate] data from an early unplanned analysis" from RP1-104 which included only 40 patients, 10% of the planned enrollment of 400 patients.

In the CRL, the FDA further revealed that it had "clearly communicated" its "concerns with the study design in multiple FDA interactions throughout [Replimune's] development program," but that "the study design concerns previously communicated were not addressed, and the contribution of [RP1] to the observed response rate in RPL-001-16 could not be determined."

On this news, the Company's share price fell $1.15 or 19.46%, before trading was halted, to close at $4.76 per share on April 10, 2026, on unusually heavy trading volume.

The complaint continues that on April 10, 2026, after the market closed, the Company issued a press release discussing the FDA's response letter for the RP1 BLA. In the press release, Replimune conceded that "a randomized controlled trial was preferred" by the FDA, but also claimed that the FDA communicated that "if the data was sufficiently compelling, a single arm trial could be acceptable for consideration under accelerated approval."

On this news, the Company's share price continued to fall $3.06 or 64.29%, to close at $1.70 per share on April 13, 2026.

WSE Stockholder Alert: Robbins LLP Reminds Investors with Significant Losses They Should Contact the Firm in Advance of the September 28, 2026 Lead Plaintiff Deadline in the Securities Fraud Class Action Filed Against Wise Group plc

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Robbins LLP reminds investors that a securities class action has been filed on behalf of all persons and entities that purchased or otherwise acquired Wise Group plc (NASDAQ: WSE) securities between May 11, 2026 and July 23, 2026 (the "Class Period").

The complaint alleges that Wise and certain of its senior executives violated the federal securities laws by making materially false and/or misleading statements regarding the Company's anti-money laundering compliance, anti-terrorist financing controls, and regulatory risks.

Investors who suffered losses during the Class Period may have legal rights. If you want to seek appointment as lead plaintiff, you must submit your papers to the court by September 28, 2026.

Listen to our podcast.

Why Was Wise Group Sued?

Wise is a global financial technology company that provides international money transfer and cross-border payment services. On May 11, 2026, the Company transferred its primary stock listing from the London Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol "WSE."

According to the complaint, defendants sought to portray Wise as well-positioned for growth in the United States while allegedly failing to disclose material regulatory issues affecting the Company's business. The lawsuit alleges that, at the time of its Nasdaq listing and related SEC filings, Wise materially understated the regulatory risks facing the Company arising from allegedly deficient anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing controls.

Specifically, the complaint alleges that defendants failed to disclose that:

- Wise allegedly faced significant regulatory risks arising from materially deficient anti-money laundering controls and anti-terrorist financing procedures;

- the Company allegedly was under an active investigation by Belgian authorities concerning potential money laundering offenses;

- Wise allegedly faced a materially greater risk that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency ("OCC") would deny its application for a U.S. national trust bank charter due to longstanding compliance deficiencies; and

- as a result, defendants' statements concerning the Company's business, regulatory compliance, and future prospects were materially false and misleading or lacked a reasonable basis.

Why Did WSE Stock Decline?

According to the complaint, on June 1, 2026, Reuters reported that the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office was investigating Wise Europe in connection with transactions reportedly involving more than €500 million in suspicious activity. The article stated that prosecutors were investigating potential money laundering offenses with alleged links to fraud, corruption, and drug trafficking. The complaint alleges that following this news, Wise's U.S.-listed shares declined from $12.77 to $10.72 over the course of three trading days.

The lawsuit further alleges that on July 24, 2026, additional information reached the market when reports disclosed that the OCC had denied Wise's application for a national trust bank license. According to the complaint, the OCC cited significant supervisory and compliance concerns, including longstanding deficiencies in Wise U.S.'s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing program. Following this disclosure, Wise's U.S.-listed shares fell an additional 6.2%, closing at $11.33 per share on July 24, 2026.

What Is a Lead Plaintiff?

The lead plaintiff is the investor appointed by the court to represent the interests of the proposed class throughout the litigation. If you want to become the lead plaintiff, you must file your papers with the court by September 28, 2026. Investors do not have to serve as lead plaintiff to potentially share in any recovery if the lawsuit is successful.

Does It Cost Anything to Participate?

No. Robbins LLP represents investors on a contingency fee basis. Investors never pay attorneys' fees or litigation expenses. If there is a recovery, defendants pay fees and costs.
