NTT, Inc.

Cailabs

NTT, Inc. (hereinafter "NTT")signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 17, 2026, with Cailabs (hereinafter "Cailabs"), a France-based company that designs and manufactures advanced photonics products, to explore strategic collaboration in the field of space-to-ground optical communications.

The collaboration aims to advance direct optical connectivity between satellite networks and terrestrial data infrastructure. It will examine the integration of NTT's digital coherent*1 and network control technology*2 into Cailabs' optical ground stations (OGS), as well as the connection of selected optical ground stations to nearby NTT data centers through NTT's All-Photonics Network*3, or APN.

This initiative applies the IOWN technology promoted by NTT to the space business sector and represents a new step toward realizing the IOWN vision*4.

In recent years, with the expansion of satellite constellations and the increase in demand for data communications, the importance of high-capacity, low-latency communication infrastructure between satellites and the ground has grown. To achieve this, the utilization of optical communication technology is expected to complement conventional wireless communication.

Under its next-generation information and communications infrastructure initiative, "IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network)," NTT has been advancing research and development of optical communication and signal processing technologies in the terrestrial network sector.

Cailabs, based in France and the United States, designs and manufactures optical ground stations for high-capacity satellite-to-ground communications. Its optical ground stations combine advanced optical technologies with systems designed for deployment and operation in real-world conditions.

Under the MoU, NTT and Cailabs will explore how their respective technologies and capabilities can contribute to an integrated communication network connecting satellite systems, optical ground stations, terrestrial optical networks and data centers.

Under the collaboration, NTT and Cailabs will explore the integration of NTT's digital coherent and network control technologies into Cailabs' optical ground stations. The companies will assess a phased technical approach, beginning with demonstrations and initial communication capabilities and potentially evolving toward higher-capacity coherent optical communications.

NTT and Cailabs will further explore the connection of selected optical ground stations to nearby NTT data centers through the All-Photonics Network, as well as the development of orchestration capabilities coordinating ground stations and terrestrial network resources. This work will contribute to defining an end-to-end architecture connecting satellites, optical ground infrastructure and terrestrial data networks.

NTT and Cailabs will evaluate a phased approach to developing optical communication infrastructure integrating space and terrestrial networks. NTT believes the collaboration could extend to a broader network of optical ground stations connected to NTT data centers, combining satellite-to-ground communications, terrestrial optical networking and coordinated network control to support future commercial services and new opportunities under NTT's space business brand, "NTT C89"*5.

Concept for the Early Commercialization of New Business Areas to Achieve Sustainable Profit Growth from FY2030 Onward (Excerpt from FY2025 Financial Results Presentation Materials)

"This partnership with Cailabs marks a significant milestone in applying NTT's IOWN technology to the space sector. Building on the technology cultivated through NTT's research and development and Cailabs' proven capability in the steady deployment of optical ground stations, we will accelerate the global expansion of optical communication infrastructure in the space sector and open up new growth opportunities."

DOCOMO Develops AI Technology for Highly Accurate Predictions with Limited Historical Data

— Paper Accepted for Presentation at ACM RecSys 2026 Conference on Recommender Systems —

TOKYO, JAPAN, September 28, 2026 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today the development of a new AI technology, the Dual-view Adaptive Retrieval-augmented Tweedie model, that enables highly accurate predictions even when only limited historical data is available. The model solves the "cold-start problem," which occurs when AI cannot make reliable predictions or recommendations due to insufficient historical data—for example, when a new service is launched. DOCOMO expects the model to have potential applications in new businesses across a wide range of industries, including digital out-of-home (DOOH)*1 advertising.

A paper describing the model has been accepted for presentation at the 20th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (ACM RecSys 2026), a leading international conference hosted by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). This acceptance recognizes the model's novelty and performance.

When launching a new service, or shortly after expanding an existing service into a different field or region, there is often insufficient historical data for AI-based predictions. This can interfere with AI-powered recommendation features and advertising-performance forecasts—the cold-start problem—resulting in providers having difficulty offering recommendations or tailoring advertisements to user interests, thus making it harder to retain users and develop new businesses.

The model addresses this challenge through two key features.

First, the model uses the "Tweedie distribution," a statistical-probability distribution that can flexibly represent complex real-world data, including data with many zero values or substantial variation. Specifically, this distribution is used in the rules used for training AI models. Conventional AI training rules use the "Gaussian distribution," which assumes that data points are mostly concentrated around the mean, forming a symmetric, bell-shaped curve, a natural pattern in which values close to the mean occur more frequently, while values farther away occur less often. But AI can struggle to learn effectively if conditions are complex, such as when data differs significantly between peak and off-peak periods, as in the case of social media engagement, or when data varies widely. However, the model uses the Tweedie distribution to appropriately train models and make predictions, even when data is unevenly distributed.

Second, the model uses "nearest neighbors"—similar cases that provide useful information when historical data for the target being predicted is limited. It automatically identifies and learns from common characteristics, such as location, time and other attributes, in data from these nearest neighbors, including other stores in the same area and other products in similar categories. The model then incorporates this information in its predictions.

The model will enable service providers to offer accurate AI-powered predictions and recommendations from the day a service launches, without waiting for large amounts of new data to accumulate. This could help to substantially accelerate the launch of new businesses.

For example, in DOOH advertising, the model will be able to predict the number of impressions*2 generated by advertising on newly installed digital signage on the first day—even in locations with substantial fluctuations in foot traffic, such as major urban train stations. These predictions will be made with limited historical data, enabling advertising-slot prices to be set and sales to begin soon after installing the signage.

The model will also enable end users to easily receive content and information suited to their interests from the moment they begin using a service, improving the overall service experience.

Going forward, DOCOMO will evaluate the model's effectiveness in field trials with DOOH businesses in Japan and overseas by March 2027, aiming to support its global commercial deployment.

- An advertising medium that uses digital signage or electronic billboards in locations such as transportation hubs, outdoor advertising sites and commercial facilities.

- The number of times an advertisement is displayed on a user's screen.

- Product and service names mentioned in this release are generally trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective companies. Trademark symbols such as TM and ® may be omitted in this release.

NTT DATA Launches 'Intact, intelligent action.' to Protect Fragile Places and Advance Sustainability Commitments

September 30, 2026

NTT DATA Group Corporation

- Global initiative will combine awareness, technology and stewardship to support fragile places around the world.

- Program will help translate sustainability commitments into practical actions.

- In the initiative's first chapter, NTT DATA employees will join Antarctic expedition led by Robert Swan, OBE, on the 40th anniversary of his first South Pole expedition.

TOKYO and LONDON-Sept. 29, 2026-NTT DATA, a global leader in AI, digital business and technology services, today announced "Intact, intelligent action." This global initiative is designed to help people and organizations translate sustainability commitments into meaningful action. The effort combines awareness, technology and stewardship in support of some of the world's most treasured yet fragile places. Antarctica will be the first chapter.

From November 25 to December 2, 2026, a dozen NTT DATA employees will join polar explorer Robert Swan and his 2041 Leadership on the Edge expedition aboard the Magellan Explorer. With the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands as their classroom, the NTT DATA team and more than 60 other business and community leaders will explore leadership under pressure, climate policy, sustainability and innovation with a focus on putting commitments into action. NTT DATA began working with Swan in 2022 and named him as the company's Sustainability Ambassador in 2025.

The expedition marks a 40-year milestone for Swan. In 1986, he led a team on a 900-mile unsupported walk to the South Pole. Three years later, he led a different team to the North Pole, becoming the first person in history to walk to both Poles. Since 2003, he has led more than 20 ship-based expeditions to Antarctica, and the November effort will be the last that he personally organizes and leads. Swan will remain active in environmental advocacy and other types of expeditions, including continued collaboration with NTT DATA.

Sustainability Framework: Planet. Prosperity. People.

NTT DATA's new initiative grows out of the company's core strategic sustainability framework: "Planet. Prosperity. People." This framework guides the company's operations, innovation, sustainability solutions and client engagement to create positive outcomes for the environment, the economy and society.

Around the world, NTT DATA's efforts include more sustainable IT practices across company operations and data centers; research and innovation focused on business, social, and environmental challenges; sponsorship of Swan's Undaunted: South Pole 2023 expedition; enabling a Smart Rainforest initiative in Australia's Daintree Rainforest; and support for Swan's 2025 "Ice Station" broadcasts from Antarctica, which reached an estimated 2.1 million young people in more than 25 countries.

"This effort -- Intact, intelligent action. -- is about helping accelerate the move from sustainability commitments to actions that support the planet," said David Costa, Chief Sustainability Business Officer and Head of Sustainability Innovation, NTT DATA. "We want people to experience and understand places that need protecting, then consider how technology, responsible choices and collaboration can help preserve them. Our goal is to inspire lasting awareness and action that helps protect these places for future generations."

Focusing Attention on Fragile Places

A distinctive symbol will connect each chapter of Intact, intelligent action. The initiative is creating an open-frame flag woven from small, meaningful materials contributed by people around the world. Rather than marking human ownership, the frame will focus attention on the place itself and our shared responsibility to preserve it.

In Antarctica, expeditioners will raise the "flag" on the ice to frame the landscape, then remove it to symbolize a commitment to keeping the continent intact. The frame will later travel to other locations as the Intact initiative expands, creating a common symbol across places facing different environmental challenges. To learn more, visit Intact, intelligent action.

A Lifetime of Advocacy

Since walking to both poles in the 1980s, Swan has led land- and ocean-based expeditions worldwide to demonstrate sustainable technologies, promote renewable energy and advocate for preserving Antarctica as a reserve land for science and peace. In 1995, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Swan an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his contributions to environmental education, sustainability and polar exploration. In 2017, he received a NOVUS Award for contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Hear and learn more from Robert Swan at ThinIce.earth.

To help address emissions associated with the upcoming expedition, Swan is making a substantial donation per participant to support rainforest regeneration in Australia.

"My fascination with Antarctica began with the great polar explorers, and protecting it became my life's mission when Jacques Cousteau personally challenged me to ask people to have the good sense to save this continent," Swan said. "The Heroic Age of polar exploration ended a century ago, yet an even greater challenge lies ahead: protecting the last great wilderness on Earth and learning to live sustainably on this planet we share. If our generation keeps Antarctica intact, that will be a legacy worthy of those who came before us and a gift to every generation that follows."

'Intact, intelligent action.' was developed with creative direction from Pep Torres of Stereonoise, including the initiative's name, design, participatory concept and open-frame flag.

Powering local growth: National Grid invites local businesses to explore Pentir to Trawsfynydd project supply chain opportunities

Date: Tuesday 6th October, 08:30 to 12:30

Venue: Celtic Royal Hotel & Spa, Caernarfon, Gwynedd LL55 1AY

Businesses from across North Wales are being invited to learn more about potential supply chain opportunities linked to National Grid's Pentir to Trawsfynydd reinforcement project at a forthcoming Meet the Buyer event.

Delivered in partnership with Business Wales, the event will provide local businesses with information on supply chain opportunities, supplier requirements and procurement processes, as well as the opportunity to meet National Grid and its Great Grid Partnership delivery partners including Murphy, Morgan Sindall and M Group. Attendees will hear directly from project partners about potential work programmes and how local businesses can position themselves for future opportunities linked to the Pentir to Trawsfynydd project.

The project will reinforce and refurbish parts of the existing high-voltage electricity network between Pentir and Trawsfynydd, helping to deliver increasing volumes of clean energy across Wales.

Demand for electricity is set to increase significantly as the way we power our homes, businesses, industry and transport changes. Alongside the growth in clean energy generation, this will require continued investment in the electricity network. Delivering this infrastructure will require a wide range of skills, services and expertise, creating opportunities for businesses across North Wales.

National Grid has established long-term supply chain partnerships to support delivery of major electricity network upgrades. In 2025, National Grid’s supply chain spending in Wales was £116.2m. This investment is helping suppliers grow capability, create job opportunities and support the delivery of new and upgraded energy infrastructure. National Grid is committed to ensuring businesses across Wales are well placed to explore and compete for opportunities arising from its investment programme.

John Lamb, Project Director at National Grid, said: “Projects such as Pentir to Trawsfynydd represent an important investment in Wales' infrastructure and have the potential to support opportunities for businesses across North Wales.

“We want local companies to understand how they can get involved, build relationships with our delivery partners and learn more about the goods, services and expertise that may be needed to support the project.

“By working with businesses in Wales and across the UK, we can help strengthen the skills, capability and capacity of the domestic supply chain needed to deliver nationally important infrastructure projects.”

Connection configurations

When connecting to the electricity transmission network, the connection arrangement offered will depend on several factors, including your location, connection requirements, available network capacity, and the most efficient way to connect customers in a particular area.

As part of Phase 2 of Connections Reform, National Grid Electricity Transmission is moving towards shared connection solutions, referred to as ‘bay sharing’, that make more efficient use of transmission infrastructure while supporting future network growth. These solutions help maximise the use of existing assets, reduce the need for dedicated infrastructure, and create opportunities for multiple customers requiring up to 450 MW of capacity to connect through shared facilities.

Connection solutions currently offered

Grid Parks

A Grid Park is a shared connection solution that enables multiple customers to connect through a single transmission connection point.

Typically used for smaller generation, a Grid Park uses a shared transformer and lower-voltage infrastructure to connect up to three customers through a common arrangement. Grid Parks are an established product already used across the transmission network and provide a cost-effective and efficient way to connect smaller customers.

Suitable for:

- Smaller transmission-connected customers

- Customers with requirements up to approximately 57 MW

- Areas where multiple customers can benefit from shared infrastructure

Find out more about some of our customers connecting into to grid parks here.

Super Grid Parks

A Super Grid Park is a higher-capacity evolution of the Grid Park concept, designed to connect larger customers or a greater number of customers through a shared connection arrangement.

These connections use higher-voltage infrastructure and are particularly suited to new substations where future network growth can be planned and accommodated. Super Grid Parks allow multiple customers to share infrastructure while maintaining flexibility for future expansion.

Suitable for:

- Larger transmission-connected customers connecting projects around 150 MW

- Locations where future customer growth is anticipated

- Shared connections requiring higher overall capacity

Banking Compounds

A Banking Compound enables multiple customers to connect through a shared high-voltage connection arrangement rather than each customer requiring a dedicated transmission bay.

This approach allows customers to retain a high-voltage connection while making more efficient use of transmission network infrastructure. By sharing a single transmission bay, multiple projects can connect in areas where dedicated bays may not be available or would not make efficient use of the network. These connections are suitable for customers connecting projects up to 450 MW.

Benefits include:

- Improved use of available transmission infrastructure

- Increased opportunity for customers to connect to the network

- Efficient use of existing substation assets

- Support for future connection growth in a particular area

Shared connection arrangements can help improve network utilisation and create additional opportunities for customers to connect to the transmission network. However, customers should be aware that these arrangements may have different operational characteristics compared with a dedicated connection, and these will be discussed as part of the connection design and offer process.

Legacy connection configurations

The following connection configurations may remain relevant for existing customers. They are generally no longer offered for new connection applications as part of our current connection approach.

Single HV Busbar Connections

Historically, some customers connected directly to a dedicated high-voltage (HV) transmission bay through a single HV busbar arrangement.

While these connections remain in operation for existing customers, they are no longer the standard connection solution for new smaller customers (requiring up to 450 MW) because a dedicated bay can reserve significantly more transmission capacity than many projects require.

Tertiary Connections

Tertiary connections provided a bespoke connection arrangement for individual customers using dedicated infrastructure. A connection is made via a third winding, known as the tertiary winding, of a Super Grid Transformer (SGT) rather than through a dedicated transmission bay.

Although a number of customers remain connected through tertiary arrangements, they are no longer offered for new connection applications due to their complexity and comparatively high cost when measured against newer shared connection solutions.

Minimum Site Interventions (Tee-Off Connections)

Minimum site intervention arrangements, often known as tee-off connections, provided a smaller-scale connection solution by connecting directly to an overhead transmission line rather than into a substation bay.

These arrangements remain part of the network for some existing customers but are no longer generally offered for new applications. Today's connection solutions are designed to support more efficient longer-term network development and future customer growth.

If you are considering a new transmission connection, find out more on the connections process and the steps you must take to get connected.

Transformer removals make way for next phase at Pelham Substation

Transformer removals make way for next phase at Pelham Substation

Two existing transformers have been successfully removed from Pelham Substation, making way for new equipment and marking a major construction milestone for National Grid’s North London Reinforcement project (NLR).

Each of the removed transformers weighed approximately 180 tonnes and had been in service at Pelham for around 35 years.

The removal completes a major phase as National Grid upgrades and expands the existing substation. It clears the way for the next stage of construction and preparations for the arrival of two new quad boosters, which will allow the substation to transmit more electricity and support growing demand.

Removing equipment of this scale required careful planning by National Grid and its contractors, Murphy and Equans, with around 20 people involved in planning and carrying out.

The transformers were dismantled in a phased and controlled manner, with the work planned and carried out in accordance with approved safety procedures and industry best practice. The phased decommissioning took around one month for each transformer.

During the decommissioning process, the team inspected components inside the transformers to understand their condition and how they had performed over time. The findings will help inform the design and management of transformers in the future.

Once these inspections were complete, a heavy-lift crane was used to remove the main sections of each transformer. These were then loaded onto specialist heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and taken off site for disposal and recycling, in line with all relevant environmental and regulatory requirements.

The team also removed supporting equipment, including the noise enclosure and air-insulated switchgear, as part of the works.

Karthik Ravikumar, Project Director at National Grid, said:

The transformer removals are a real milestone for everyone working at Pelham. Moving equipment of this scale takes a huge amount of planning, coordination and teamwork, with safety at the heart of everything we do.

“I’m proud of our National Grid colleagues and contractor teams who have worked together to reach this point safely. It is a tangible sign of the progress being made on site and clears the way for the next stage of construction, as we prepare for the new quad boosters.

With the existing transformers removed, work is now underway preparing the site for the two new quad boosters.

Quad boosters are specialised pieces of electrical equipment that help control the flow of electricity. The new units will increase how much electricity Pelham Substation can transmit and help keep the wider electricity system balanced.

Each new quad booster will weigh approximately 300 tonnes. Due to their size and weight, the equipment will be transported to Pelham in four separate heavy-lift movements. Each delivery will be carefully planned and coordinated to make sure it can be carried out safely, while minimising disruption to local communities and other works taking place on site.

Before the quad boosters arrive, teams will prepare the installation area, carry out piling and build the foundations for the new equipment.

The quad boosters are expected to arrive at Pelham between February and April 2027.

Further work will continue at Pelham Substation as part of the project’s wider construction programme. This includes working with UK Power Networks to reroute a short section of overhead line and underground some cables, allowing 11 pylons around the substation to be removed.

The existing overhead line route between Pelham and Waltham Cross will also be upgraded with higher-voltage cables to support the increased capacity at the substation.

NLR is a major upgrade of the existing electricity network between Pelham and Hackney. The project will modernise substations that have been in use for more than 60 years and will double the capacity of existing overhead lines.
