Dolly Parton Died of Cancer, Spokesperson Says. Here’s Everything We Know

Dolly Parton’s estate announced that the music icon died following a “brief battle with cancer.”

After Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver shared the news of her passing at the age of 80 in a video message uploaded to her Instagram account Aug. 25, 2026, her estate shared more details about her health struggles.

“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” Parton’s estate said in a statement.

The statement also praised Parton for living a life filled with philanthropy and kindness.

“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement read.

“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact.”

The estate signed the statement “Team Dolly.”

Parton’s sister Stella also referenced her cancer battle in a tribute shared Aug. 27.

“My sister was one of the most generous, thoughtful and kind people I’ve ever known,” she wrote.

“What the world saw is exactly who she was, so much so, she told me recently that if there was no hope for her, she would still allow her medical team to try experimental drugs in the hope of helping others in the future.”

Parton had not publicly shared that she was diagnosed with cancer prior to her death. However, she had informed fans that she had health struggles prior to her death.

What Was Dolly Parton’s Cause of Death?

Parton’s estate confirmed in a statement that she had faced “a brief battle with cancer” before she died. The estate said she died on Aug. 25 at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center with her loved ones by her side.

Fans were aware that Parton had been dealing with health challenges about a year before she died.

In September 2025, she announced that she needed to cancel her Las Vegas residency shows to address “health challenges.”

Earlier this year in March, she spoke more about her “few little health issues” at the opening day celebration for Dollywood’s 41st season.

“I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” she said regarding the death of husband Carl Thomas Dean in March 2025.

“I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally and physically. But, all is good. It didn’t slow me down,” she added.

She shared additional details in a video uploaded to Instagram in May.

“The good news is I’m responding really well to meds and treatments, and I’m improving every day. Now, the bad news is it’s going to take me a little while before I’m up to stage-performance level,” she told fans.

What Kind of Cancer Did Dolly Parton Have?

The statement from Team Dolly did not specify what kind of cancer she had.

What Did Dolly Parton’s Family Say About Her Death?

Seaver, the son of Parton’s sister Cassie Parton, previously shared in his video that his aunt asked him to record the message before he “fully absorbed it as a future reality.” He said fulfilling her request was “honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness.”

“Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever. Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy,” Seaver shared.

“He farmed the soil. She farmed songs and happiness. Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”

Parton’s goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, honored Parton with a tribute during an October 2026 performance at the Hollywood Bowl. The venue is the only place Cyrus had ever seen her “Aunt Dolly” perform live.

Before Cyrus sang her rendition of Parton’s “Jolene,” she tearfully addressed the audience. “Me and Dolly, we are eternal,” Cyrus said, seated at the edge of the stage. “Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart.”

“And I’m gonna see her again,” Cyrus went on. “And I can’t f------ wait. And I miss her.”

Other tributes to the music icon poured in following Parton’s passing. TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager shared a heartfelt message, as did Kelly Clarkson, Parton’s “9 to 5” co-stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, Patti LaBelle and more.

Vanderbilt Health also honored Parton’s legacy, including her numerous financial contributions to both children’s cancer and infectious disease research. A $1 million contribution from the singer helped fund Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

PayCargo Joins Forces with AREAS Foundation, Bringing Education to Global Communities
Image File
Original HTML

PayCargo announces an ongoing partnership with AREAS Foundation, a Spain-based non-profit focused on supporting the social inclusion and personal and professional development of people at risk of exclusion through educational and training programs. The partnership reflects both organizations’ longstanding values centered around ethics and service, as they approach several meaningful projects in 2026.

AREAS Foundation programming is built to support quality education in a safe, healthy environment. The organization offers a Scholarship Program which funds school fees, transportation, accommodation, and other necessary expenses so that children with good academic results, but insufficient financial means, can pursue their studies. They also tackle Construction Projects, providing full funding for new or improved educational facilities.

Eduardo Del Riego, Global CEO, PayCargo said: “We’re thrilled to work with AREAS Foundation towards our shared goal of empowering individuals with critical tools to improve their quality of life. We look forward to growing our partnership and deepening PayCargo’s involvement, working toward making lasting positive changes within vulnerable communities.”

In 2026, the scholarship program has 110 active scholarships, directly benefiting over 1,000 individuals across India, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Gambia, and Spain. The program grants these scholarships to students at several levels, including early childhood, elementary and secondary education, and university.

Two construction projects, which kicked off earlier in 2026, will impact over 35,000 individuals. Phase one of the construction project in Kenya involves building a Rescue Dormitory for girls fleeing genital mutilation and child marriage, providing a safe place to live where they can focus on their studies. This phase is expected to take one year before moving on to phases two and three, which will ultimately aim to further improve education, safety, and health in the rural community. The second construction project, in Nigeria, is focused on building a new facility for students at the Holy Name School, which is in danger of collapse and, at the same time, cannot accommodate its growing demand for enrollment. The new school will have updated conditions and the space necessary to provide quality education for its students.

Gabriel Novela del Rey, President, AREAS Foundation said: “Global impact is woven into our work, and we’re glad to have an internationally recognized partner in PayCargo. Their support enables us to both make headway with our projects and reach more people and organizations, bringing awareness to our vision.”

Image Source: Fred Guerdin E-COMMERCE FORUM

PayCargo was on the ground in Liège for the 2026 EU Cross-Border E-commerce Forum (EU-CBEC), hosted at the Palais des Congrès by Liège Airport (LGG) and the Wallonia Export-Investment Agency (AWEX). It was two days of strong conversations, informative panels, and a clear direction on where cross-border e-commerce and air cargo are heading.

Three insights stood out, and they’re shaping how PayCargo is thinking about the road ahead for e-commerce, air cargo, and customs.

1. The EU’s new low-value customs duty is redirecting trade, not collapsing it

The overarching theme of the forum was the EU’s removal of its duty exemption on low-value goods: as of July 2026, member states introduced a €3 customs duty per item on e-commerce parcels valued below €150, aimed at leveling the playing field as low-cost, high-volume platforms flooded the market with duty-free imports.

The effects are showing up fast in the data. China/Hong Kong–Europe freighter capacity fell sharply between June and August, with Budapest down 58%, Liège down 35%, and Schiphol down 28%. Ryan Keyrouse of data company Rotate presented in Liège and named Budapest, Liège, Urumqi, and Hong Kong as the e-commerce gateways where the declines are most concentrated. Liège Airport itself reported e-commerce parcel volumes down 24% year-over-year, with customs declarations down 52% — though total cargo tonnage was still up 4% on the strength of pharma, data center equipment, and flowers.

Keyrouse’s data also points to something more nuanced than a straight decline. US and Brazilian e-commerce volumes have already recovered after similar changes to their low-value import exemptions, and global e-commerce air cargo volumes in July 2026 were still 23% higher than two years prior. So, the demand hasn’t disappeared; it’s being redirected to wherever the rules are least restrictive.

2. Reaction speed has become the operative question for air freight

Panelists described a shift in the cadence of disruption: where a trend used to move meaningful volume once every four or five months, forum discussion suggested that new demand shifts and capacity reallocations are now happening every two to three weeks. This was raised as a panel observation rather than a hard data point, but the carrier response backs it up — within a single month, Air China Cargo cut 25 weekly flights to Europe, bringing its total to 35 per week, while China Central Airlines reduced its schedule from 30 to 20 flights and CMA CGM cut from 12 to 3.

France offered a preview of what’s coming EU-wide: volumes there fell 30% in March when it introduced its own charge ahead of the EU levy, deepening to a 64% decline by July. And the regulatory pressure isn’t finished — a separate €2 per-consignment handling fee takes effect November 1, 2026, bridging to the EU Customs Data Hub in 2028, with individual member states layering on their own fees in the meantime. For forwarders and carriers on Far East–Europe lanes, planning around stable, predictable flows is no longer realistic.

3. E-commerce and AI cargo, once air freight’s two growth engines, are pulling apart

For years, e-commerce and AI/data center buildout drove air cargo growth together. That’s no longer the case. As one vertical loses ground in Europe, the other is pulling capacity toward the US.

Maarten Wormer of Aevean presented the numbers: US-bound, data center-related air imports rose 103% year-over-year over the first seven months of 2026, reaching 107,000 tons in July — roughly 1,000 freighter flights. Within that, servers were up 181%, network equipment up 130%, and computer components up 86%. Overall air cargo demand was up 5.8% year-to-date, led by Asia Pacific–North America lanes (+24%), while Asia Pacific–Europe grew just 4%.

The pattern holds at the country level. Asia–US demand is leaning heavily on AI-related exports out of Taiwan, South Korea’s load factors to the US are running near 90%, and Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore are now among the tightest airfreight markets globally — even as ex-China–US demand stays soft. It’s the same divergence in miniature: one vertical redirecting, one accelerating, and both demanding a level of agility the industry is still adjusting to.

PayCargo thanks the EU CBEC and AWEX teams for a well-organized forum, and the wider community of attendees for their perspectives throughout the event.

Meet PayCargo at a future event.

Diabetes drug shows promise for weight loss in people with obesity
Image File
Original HTML

A drug approved to treat type 2 diabetes can have another striking effect on the body: significant weight loss in people with obesity.

Once-weekly injections of tirzepatide provided “substantial and sustained reductions in body weight,” researchers reported in The New England Journal of Medicine over the weekend.

“We need this tool in the toolbox. There is vastly disproportionately less treatment for obesity as a chronic disease than other chronic diseases,” NBC news medical contributor Dr. Natalie Azar said.

“It’s so important and so relevant. The majority of Americans are either overweight or obese.”

About 9 out of 10 people with obesity lost weight while taking tirzepatide in this study, said Dr. Ania Jastreboff, the lead author and director of weight management and obesity prevention at the Yale Stress Center in New Haven, Connecticut.

"I was very impressed. I don’t think that many of us expected those types of results," Jastreboff told TODAY.

"I think (it's) very exciting," added Dr. Robert Gabbay, chief science and medical officer at the American Diabetes Association.

"We always knew obesity is important and has a profound impact on diabetes and most people with type 2 diabetes have obesity. But the tools to address obesity have not been as potent as what we saw here."

More than 2,500 adults with either a BMI of 30 or more, or a BMI of 27 or more and at least one weight-related complication, took part in a phase 3 double-blind, randomized, controlled trial. It compared three different doses of tirzepatide with a placebo. None of the participants had diabetes.

In addition to the drug, participants also received lifestyle interventions that included counseling sessions to help them eat healthy, balanced meals with a deficit of 500 calories per day, and exercise for at least 150 minutes per week.

After almost a year and a half, the participants lost on average of:

- 5 pounds on the placebo

- 35 pounds on the lowest dose of tirzepatide (5 milligrams)

- 49 pounds on the medium dose (10 milligrams)

- 52 pounds on the highest dose (15 milligrams)

The results are comparable to those doctors see with gastric bypass surgery, Azar noted, and higher than what has been observed with other drugs currently available on the market to treat obesity.

The clinical trial was financially supported by Eli Lilly, the maker of the drug.

More than 40% of American adults are considered obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Obesity treatment has traditionally focused on lifestyle changes, but obesity is a “complex” metabolic disease that makes it difficult to return to a lower weight without extra help, such as anti-obesity medications, the authors of the study wrote.

Our bodies evolved to prevent starvation, said Jastreboff, who serves on the scientific advisory board for Eli Lilly. They will do whatever they can to hold on to extra fat, so that if there’s a famine, we will not die.

That system is also impacted by a modern world where people live sedentary lifestyles, often experience stress and a lack of sleep, and have lots of tasty food readily available at all hours. Obesity results from the dysregulation of how much fat our body wants to carry — a setpoint determined by our brain, she noted.

"The goal of these anti-obesity medications is to reset that setpoint. So basically our body wants to carry less weight, specifically less fat," Jastreboff said.

"The 'tides' are shifting, and there are now more options for people with obesity to lose weight," researchers added in an accompanying editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The drug tested in the trial affects two important hormones that impact several areas of the body, Azar said. In the pancreas, it increases the release of insulin to reduce the patient's blood sugar levels. It also helps to suppress appetite and slows how fast the stomach is emptying so the patient feels full faster.

"One of the important things of using the medicine is to have people be more mindful of their eating, to take a moment and realize, ‘Oh yes, I am full. I don’t need to keep eating,'" Gabbay noted.

Patients inject the drug themselves into their abdomen or their arm. "It takes 30 seconds once a week... it’s very easy," Jastreboff said.

When it came to side effects, the drug was tolerated well, Azar said. The most frequently reported issues were gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation. More trials will be done, and more are already underway, Jastreboff said.

Patients will have to stay on the medicine for it to keep working in the same way people who receive medication for high blood pressure must keep taking it, even when their hypertension improves, Jastreboff said.

"When you stop that medicine, their weight goes back up and we should not be surprised because obesity is a chronic disease just like any other chronic disease. We have to treat it. We have to continue treating it," she noted.

Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved tirzepatide as Mounjaro, a treatment for adults with type 2 diabetes. It has not yet been approved as an obesity treatment.

“We are looking forward to reviewing tirzepatide data with the FDA and discussing a potentially expedited path forward, and we should have an updated timeline by the end of the year,” said Maggie Pfeiffer, associate director of strategy and operations at Lilly Diabetes.

But the drug won’t ever be a substitute for diet and exercise, Azar cautioned.

"We do not have a pill or an injection that can help people make healthier food choices or eat healthfully or move more," Jastreboff agreed. "So it’s critical as patients are losing weight that we help them do so in a way that really highlights the importance of making healthy food choices and making sure that they’re incorporating movement into their daily lives."

The drug is also likely to be expensive: Tirzepatide approved for diabetes costs about $1,000 a month, Azar noted. Lilly is offering savings cards to reduce patient out-of-pocket costs, Pfeiffer said.
