Is AI effecting your life? YES!

Even though most people are unaware of its presence, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been slowly creeping into every aspect of our lives. It helps us get cheap airline tickets, it gives us better search results while translating text into more than 100 different languages, it approves us for financial credit, and it is beginning to improve our health with better diagnoses and drugs. There are countless other ways (see the article, "10 AI use cases") that AI applications are becoming an integral part, not only of our digital world but also other aspects of our personal lives.

Emerging from the AI Winter

AI is not a new concept. It has a long and diverse history within academics, the military, and industry, dating back to the dawn of computers in the 1940s and 1950s. Early efforts, however, were often disconnected and punctuated with over-exuberant optimism, leading to pessimistic, dark periods, referred to as the AI winter.

In the past ten years, statistical machine learning (ML), the present realization of AI (see the article by Bernard Marr ), has witnessed an unprecedented success of intelligent systems. This success is driven by three factors: massive amounts of data, the computation capability of CPUs and GPUs, and algorithmic improvements.

To teach or not to teach

Some believe that ML is more than a subset of AI, it is something more fundamental that allows machines to learn in ways that are still not understood (see the article, "Dark secrets of AI"). At the heart of statistical ML, the objective is to find a functional mapping that transforms data into a predictive mathematical model (similar to finding the straight line that best "fits" a set of data). For this, data (e.g., text, audio, video, genomes, etc.) must first be transformed into numerical feature vectors.

Next, ML models are fit, or "trained" (i.e., internal parameters are adjusted), with one of two methods: either "supervised" or "unsupervised" learning. In both cases, the resulting ML model is used to predict the class of other unlabeled data. Supervised learning is "training-by-example"; the classes are known ahead of time, and the training procedure includes information about the feature vector with its corresponding class label. In contrary, unsupervised learning is a discovery process, for which no underlying structure is known or assumed, and the result is a separation of data defined by class boundaries.

Let the Machine Think

Early ML pattern recognition systems had limited success because features were manually engineered. For example, a face detection system might be based upon manually crafted rules for the geometric relations of facial features. In a seminal paper by Viola and Jones in 2001 (see the Wikipedia entry) showed that by allowing the computer to select relevant features, the pattern recognition task was far better and more robust. Unlike other techniques at the time, their algorithm was data-driven. The computer decided which set of Haar wavelets best described a human face, showing that it was better suited for selecting features, rather than the human crafted features.

Despite the success of this and other subsequent supervised learning systems, recognition success was limited to the training process, depending upon the time-consuming process of providing class labels. What was needed was a machine capable of teaching itself the class labels, akin to unsupervised learning. In 2012, a group from Google and Stanford did just that (see the article, "Google computers learn to identify cats" at Slate). The system was presented with lots of videos of cats, but without class labels, and learned by itself what a cat was.

Let the machine Think Deeply!

The paradigm shift in ML is due to the advent of Deep Neural Network (DNN) models, which are based upon large artificial neural networks(ANN). These models work so well, that other techniques are rapidly being superseded. The use of ANNs goes back to work of McCulloch and Pitts (see their original paper) in the 1940s. While their use has waxed and waned, interest was rekindled in 2009 by the remarkable results obtained by increasing the number of network layers and algorithm improvements (see the article, "Deep Learning" at Nature).

Deep learning is data-driven, yet produces cognitive qualities associated with intelligence. Although internal layers of the DNNs are known to work in a multi-resolution manner (i.e., some layers capture details, while others see a bigger picture), the way these complex systems make decisions is still not fully understood (see the article, "AI revolution in science"). Such questions are stimulating new lines of inquiry into human cognition and may bridge a yet unknown gap between artificial intelligence and fundamental physics (see the article, "Holographic principle/deep learning").

Software Tools for AI

Many software libraries and tools exist for building AI systems (see a brief list at "Open-source AI tools" ), yet they share many similarities concerning basic training and prediction operations of ML. One such tool on the list, TensorFlow, represents an excellent example for building AI systems in Python (a full-featured open source interpreted programming language with many libraries for data analysis and visualization). Also of interest, the platforms Theano and Torch are general purpose high-performance numerical platforms for running deep learning models on CPUs and GPUs.

Apart from DNNs, Scikits sklearn is a python library that implements many ML methods for supervised and unsupervised learning and regression. Also, many other software languages can be used, such as R, which is a popular open-source statistical computing programming language that has a large community for machine learning.

Building your AI in Python

Imagine building an AI application to discover disease biomarkers from a set of patients using multiomics and clinical data. For example, based on these biomarkers, the system could divide patients into responder groups for drug therapy. A typical workflow for building an AI supervised learning application could be as follows. First, a modeling framework, or classifier, should be selected that best maps to the problem (i.e., DNN, Random Forests, SVMs, etc.). Next, the high-level representations (i.e., omics data, images, video, text, etc.) would be transformed into numerical feature vectors (e.g., for biomarkers, these may represent the presence/absence of biological molecules). Each representation would be associated with a corresponding class label (e.g., a patient's disease state). The collection of feature vectors with known class labels would constitute a supervised learning procedure. In the TensorFlow library, these quantities would be matrix inputs to a training function that would also be responsible for selecting the DNN topology.

The output of the training process is a large matrix, representing a function of the internal coefficients of the network. For features from different classes, this matrix would be quite different, while for features from the same class, the coefficients (hence the ANN) would be nearly identical. Predictions for newly presented data would classify the data due to these similarities and differences. Although more complex, this simplified description captures the essential features needed to build a modern intelligent AI project.

Concluding Remarks

Building intelligent systems will continue to expand into new areas and eventually transform our society. Now, we are just at the "Cambrian explosion" (see the article, "Why Deep Learning matters") of the deep learning AI transformation, and it will only get more interesting.

Bitdefender Highlights GravityZone’s Role in Addressing Cybersecurity Challenges Facing SMBs
Original HTML

BUCHAREST, Romania — October 22, 2026 — Bitdefender has highlighted the role of GravityZone in addressing cybersecurity challenges affecting small and medium-sized businesses, with attention focused on centralized security management, endpoint protection, threat visibility, patch management, and safeguards against phishing and ransomware. The GravityZone platform forms part of Bitdefender’s portfolio of cyber security solutions for small business and provides multiple security packages designed around different organizational requirements.

Small and medium-sized businesses continue to face cybersecurity challenges associated with limited IT resources, constrained budgets, remote work environments, unpatched systems, employee security awareness, and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. Bitdefender’s SMB security approach places centralized management and layered protection at the center of GravityZone capabilities, creating a framework for managing security controls through a unified cloud-based console.

GravityZone addresses endpoint protection requirements through security capabilities covering phishing, ransomware, web-based attacks, and threat visibility. Additional functions available across GravityZone packages include network attack defense, web access control, device control, endpoint risk analytics, machine learning, sandbox analysis, and fileless attack defense. Such capabilities correspond with common security requirements among organizations operating with smaller technology teams and limited dedicated cybersecurity resources.

Patch management represents another area of focus within small business cyber security solutions. Unpatched systems can create opportunities for exploitation when known vulnerabilities remain unresolved. GravityZone includes automated Patch Management capabilities intended to support vulnerability remediation and reduce exposure associated with outdated software. Full Disk Encryption and Patch Management options also support compliance-related requirements involving frameworks and regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS, according to Bitdefender.

Remote work and bring-your-own-device environments create additional requirements for endpoint, email, and mobile protection. GravityZone addresses those environments through endpoint security, email security, and mobile threat defense capabilities. Centralized visibility can also assist security teams with identifying vulnerabilities and reviewing threat information across protected endpoints.

The GravityZone portfolio includes Small Business Security, Business Security, and Business Security Premium packages. Small Business Security provides protection against phishing, ransomware, and web-based attacks alongside endpoint security visibility. Business Security adds Network Attack Defense, Web Access Control, Device Control, and Endpoint Risk Analytics. Business Security Premium adds capabilities including Tunable Machine Learning through HyperDetect, Sandbox Analyzer, Fileless Attack Defense, and Microsoft Exchange coverage with antispam and antimalware functions.

Threat visibility remains a significant consideration for organizations without large security operations teams. GravityZone incorporates risk analytics and threat insights intended to identify vulnerabilities and provide information for remediation decisions. Endpoint Risk Analytics within Business Security provides additional capabilities for identifying, assessing, and addressing endpoint weaknesses.

Independent evaluations referenced by Bitdefender provide additional context surrounding GravityZone performance. The Bitdefender SMB cybersecurity page cites AV-Comparatives’ 2025 Enterprise and Endpoint Protection Test, reporting top breach prevention and lowest total cost of ownership, with Bitdefender identified as the only vendor blocking 100% of attacks during the first stage. The page also references an AV-TEST 2023 award for Best Protection and Best Performance in the business users category.

Welo Global and Crowdin Partner to Expand Access to AI-Powered Translation Technology
Original HTML

Welo Global, a global leader in AI-powered language, content, and data solutions, and Crowdin, a cloud-based localization management platform, today announced a strategic partnership that brings Welo Global's Opal AI translation and quality platform natively into the Crowdin platform.

The integration, maintained by Crowdin and available in the Crowdin Store, connects directly to Opal, giving customers access to AI-powered translation and quality evaluation capabilities within their existing localization environment. This enables organizations to incorporate Opal's technology into established workflows without adopting a separate platform, supporting greater efficiency and flexibility in managing multilingual content.

The partnership combines Crowdin's developer-first, continuous localization workflows with Opal's AI translation technology, enabling organizations to automate translation workflows, evaluate translation quality, and scale multilingual operations. It also reflects Welo Global's broader strategy of expanding access to its technology through an open ecosystem of enterprise platforms and technology partners.

"Enterprises need the flexibility to combine the technologies and services that best support their business," said Darin Goble, VP, AI Platform, at Welo Global. "Our partnership with Crowdin reflects our commitment to an open technology ecosystem where customers can access advanced AI capabilities without being tied to a single platform or provider. By integrating Opal into established workflows, we're helping organizations increase automation, improve efficiency, and maintain control over their multilingual operations."

Expanding Access to Enterprise AI Translation

Opal combines machine translation, large language models, intelligent automation, and quality evaluation to support multilingual content production at scale. Its data science-backed approach to translation quality and benchmarking helps organizations assess performance and make informed decisions about translation workflows.

Through Crowdin, customers can access Opal's AI-powered translation and quality evaluation capabilities directly within the platform they already use to manage multilingual content. The integration reduces the need to move between separate systems and supports a more streamlined approach to translation and quality assessment.

For organizations managing continuous localization across software, applications, websites, documentation, and other frequently updated content, the integration provides an additional option for incorporating AI into existing processes. Teams can maintain their established Crowdin workflows while accessing Welo Global's translation technology to support faster content delivery, consistent quality, and greater operational efficiency.

“AI is now part of almost every localization workflow, and the real question is whether teams can trust its output at scale. I’m glad we can offer our users Opal as one more way to get there. Crowdin lets every team shape its localization setup around its own content and process, and integrations like this one make it possible,” said Anton Yurkiv, CEO of Crowdin.

Two Piston Peak Rides Coming to Magic Kingdom Announced at D23
Image File
Original HTML

At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa, Disney officially announced new details about high-octane attractions and spectacular scenery coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. Taking to the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress stage at D23 2026 to share the news were Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative for Walt Disney World and Imagineer Jason Grandt.

Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along

Making its public debut, the second attraction coming to Piston Peak was announced: Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along.

Inspired by the “Diva of Demolition” from Cars 3, Michael announced that the ride will feature Miss Fritter as a “huge school-bus-sized animatronic” who hosts a stampeding bash at her “wildest demolition derby yet.”

Cars Ridge Run Rally

Further details were also revealed around Piston Peak’s previously announced racing attraction. Imagineer Jason Grandt introduced the crowd to Cars Ridge Run Rally and described the experience as a quest to find “the wildest racer in the wheelderness” as they compete for the “fastest lap in the west.”

The course will take racers through the rugged beauty of America’s national parks, including a climb up Piston Peak itself, where an icy, snow-covered mountaintop awaits. Jason shared that he’s especially excited to experience the frosty summit at night.

After reaching the top, racers will plummet down for a camelback descent and later navigate an exhilarating geyser field. The race ends by circling the Old Tankfull geyser before a sprint to the finish line where Lightning McQueen and Mater are covering the race live on Racing Sports Network.

Fans at D23 got an up-close look at those off-road challenges – plus ridges, rivers, mud flats, tree-covered trails, and more – at the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion, where a detailed 225-square-foot scale model showcased the entire Piston Peak National Park project.

Revolutionary Ride Technology and Construction

Cars Ridge Run Rally will debut a completely new ride vehicle, designed not to simulate an off-road car, but to be one. Michael explained that the attraction design is unlike typical theme park systems, promising that guests will “feel every bump, drop, and rock because this vehicle’s tires and suspension are truly driving over and reacting to them.”

Progress is already “fully underway” and Michael described the visible updates as “Imagineering in the round,” for a racing experience unlike anything else in the world.

Piston Peak National Park Builds on the Story of Frontierland

Cars from around the country are fueling up to be the wildest racer in the “wheelderness.” Of course, we know that fans are curious to see how the exciting new backdrop for the big rally race will fit into the waters, landscapes, and storytelling at Magic Kingdom.

Today, we are excited to share that Piston Peak National Park will continue the sweeping storytelling tradition that has crossed Liberty Square and Frontierland since opening day.

Westward Ho! Crossing into New Frontiers at Magic Kingdom

Since the early days of Magic Kingdom, adventurous guests have traveled across space and time as they pass from Liberty Square to Frontierland. Starting with architectural influences from upstate New York and colonial America in Liberty Square, before traveling to a bear-y fun concert in the North Woods, a stop by New Orleans at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and ending in the Arizona bluffs at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

At the heart of all these stories are heroic characters with a belief in themselves that helped forge a path to their dreams. To continue this journey in great American storytelling, Piston Peak National Park will be part of the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom.

Welcome to Piston Peak National Park

Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.

Inside Piston Peak, guests will be able to see and explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and more all set within the Disney and Pixar Cars universe. To make sure these buildings fit naturally within the surrounding majestic landscapes, Imagineers are using a style of architecture called “Parkitecture,” which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.

From the outside, trees will provide a natural barrier between the off-road rally and other parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Rugged mountains with dramatic peaks will be nestled along a calming waterway across from Grizzly Hall and soaring geysers from the famed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will stretch into the trails of our off-road rally.

Cruising Just Around the Bend

Imagineers are hard at work beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad bringing to life the first-ever land inspired by the Disney Villains with two major attractions, dining and shopping all on an incredibly twisted grand scale. So follow along every step of the way on the Disney Parks Blog because more details are coming soon.
