Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen Opens Its Doors with Ribbon Cutting in Gaithersburg

Third-generation Lebanese Chef Rachid Eido joins community leaders to celebrate Kareem's debut at Rio Lakefront

GAITHERSBURG, Md., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mediterranean and the Chesapeake are sharing a table in Gaithersburg. Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen officially celebrated its debut today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Rio Lakefront, bringing generations of Lebanese culinary tradition, family recipes, and hospitality to Montgomery County.

The new restaurant welcomes Gaithersburg diners to a menu inspired by the Eido family's recipes, from handmade mezze and fresh-baked breads to Lamb Mouzat, Farrouj and Kareem's signature hummus. Kareem's also gives its Lebanese tradition a distinctly Maryland twist with an exclusive crab hummus made with Maryland crab.

The celebration brought together Chef Rachid Eido, Karim El-Hibri of East West Hospitality Group, the Kareem's team, local leaders, and members of the community to officially welcome the restaurant to Gaithersburg.

"I'm proud to bring Kareem's to Maryland and share the food, traditions and hospitality that have been part of my family for generations," said Chef Rachid Eido. "Lebanese hospitality is about more than serving a meal. It is about opening your table, sharing generously and making people feel like they belong. That is what we want every guest to experience when they come to Kareem's."

At the center of Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen is Chef Rachid, a third-generation Lebanese chef whose culinary career has included work at the Four Seasons in Washington, D.C., and throughout the Washington region before helping bring Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen to Naples, Florida, in 2018.

The restaurant's name reflects one of the values at the heart of the experience. Kareem means "generous" in Arabic, a fitting reflection of Lebanese hospitality and the tradition of welcoming people around the table.

That spirit of generosity is reflected throughout the Kareem's experience, from the way guests are welcomed to the care behind each dish. Kareem's signature hummus, for example, is prepared over three days using traditional methods, along with variations such as beet and harissa hummus.

Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen is now open at 212 Boardwalk Place at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg and joins Montgomery County's growing dining scene and brings a distinctive Lebanese dining experience to the area's diverse collection of international cuisines.

About Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen

Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen is a full-service restaurant celebrating the flavors, heritage and hospitality of Lebanon. Located at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Kareem's brings generations of Lebanese cooking traditions to the DMV through handmade mezze, fresh-baked breads, signature dishes and a dining experience centered on generosity, hospitality and gathering around the table.

Telephone and Data Systems Announces It Is No Longer Pursuing the Acquisition of Public Shares of Array Digital Infrastructure

TDS Expects to Recommence Repurchase Program

CHICAGO, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. (NYSE: TDS) (the "Company" or "TDS") today announced that it is no longer pursuing the acquisition of the Common Shares of Array Digital Infrastructure, Inc. (NYSE: AD) ("Array") that it does not already own and has withdrawn its previously announced proposal. Under the terms of the proposal, each Array Common Share not owned by TDS would have been exchanged for 0.86 of a TDS Common Share, subject to the assumptions set forth in the proposal. TDS will continue to hold its approximately 82% ownership interest in Array.

"While we remain confident that the combination presents substantial benefits, we no longer believe that now is the right time to complete such a transaction. Despite extensive review on both sides, we were not able to reach agreement on the form of consideration and value," said Walter Carlson, President and Chief Executive Officer of TDS. "We appreciate the time and effort that the Special Committee of the Board of Directors of Array devoted to this process. We remain confident in Array's business and long-term prospects and are committed to supporting Array's continued success as a leading owner and operator of wireless communications infrastructure. Similarly, we remain confident in the long-term prospects of TDS Telecom as we execute our strategy to expand our marketable fiber service footprint and deliver value for customers and our shareholders."

TDS continues to support Array's previously disclosed intention to opportunistically monetize its remaining wireless spectrum assets. TDS and Array intend in the near term to increase their efforts to pursue opportunities to monetize such assets.

With the withdrawal of the proposal to Array, TDS expects to recommence repurchases of TDS Common Shares under its previously announced share repurchase programs, including the additional $500 million share repurchase authorization announced in November 2025. As of June 30, 2026, approximately $523.9 million remained available under TDS's share repurchase programs. The timing, manner and amount of any repurchases will be determined by TDS in its discretion and will depend on market conditions, applicable legal requirements and other factors.

Sceye and SoftBank Corp. Complete Stratospheric Connectivity Demonstration in Japan, Advancing Towards HAPS Commercialization
Image File
Original HTML

First mission of Sceye's Service Test Program travels more than 15,000 km from New Mexico to Japan in the stratosphere, backhauls into SoftBank Corp.'s core network, verifies Direct-to-Device and edge computing capabilities and HAPS-based communications with drones.

TOKYO, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Sceye, a U.S. aerospace and material science company specializing in High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) for telecommunications and real-time environmental monitoring, today announced the successful trans-Pacific flight of its Service Test 1 (ST1) mission from New Mexico to Japan. Traveling more than 15,000 km through the stratosphere in 13 days, upon arrival over Japan, ST1 demonstrated mobile broadband connectivity to unmodified devices through SoftBank Corp.'s core network and HAPS-based edge computing and communication with drones to support the development of a 3D communications network.

Conducted in partnership with SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO:9434, "SoftBank"), a leading operator of telecommunications and IT businesses in Japan and globally, ST1 marks Sceye's first flight to Asia and a groundbreaking milestone towards the commercial deployment of HAPS as stratospheric infrastructure.

"This flight marks a defining moment for Sceye and for the commercial potential of HAPS," said Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, Founder and CEO of Sceye. "Flying from the US to Japan demonstrates the performance required to make the stratosphere a viable layer of infrastructure and realize the future of AI, edge computing, and 6G. Together with SoftBank, we are moving beyond proving the technology to demonstrating how Sceye can complement and extend existing networks and deliver persistent connectivity at scale."

The stratosphere offers the optimal vantage point: It is close enough to Earth for high-capacity connectivity and observation, yet the altitude is high enough for wide-area reach. Importantly, the stratosphere offers space-like conditions without the cost of being in space and the disadvantages of being in orbit. Sceye's HAPS maintain altitude and their area of operation in the stratosphere through consecutive day and night cycles, operating like geostationary satellites, only 1,800 times closer to Earth and at a fraction of the cost.

In 2025, SoftBank Corp. invested in Sceye's HAPS-based stratospheric infrastructure as a scalable solution to complement terrestrial towers and satellite constellations. The strategic partnership advances a shared vision for HAPS and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) as transformative infrastructure that can expand connectivity, support communications during disasters, and enable future applications across AI, IoT, aerial communications, edge computing, and 6G.

ST1 carried SceyeCELL, a first-of-its-kind "cell tower in the sky" designed to deliver wide-area mobile broadband directly to standard devices from the stratosphere. When deployed at full scale, one Sceye HAPS is designed to cover the equivalent area of approximately 500 terrestrial towers. During the ST1 mission, Sceye and SoftBank demonstrated mobile broadband from the stratosphere, including text messaging, voice calls, internet access, and video streaming. Testing also included emergency calls, using an emergency alert messaging system designed for large-scale disasters, and communications with drones.

Sceye's ST1 mission launched on August 9, 2026 at 7:00 AM MDT from New Mexico. Additional notable mission attributes include:

- Traveled more than 15,000 km across the Pacific to Japan in 13 days

- Operated within Japanese managed air space for over 7 days

- Remained continuously within its area of operation for an extended period, achieving a station-seeking radius as low as 5 km

- Operated at approximately 16.5 km in altitude while completing telecommunications, drone, and emergency communications

- Confirmed communications performance equivalent to that of terrestrial networks while reducing radio interference with ground-based base stations

- Through a server installed on the HAPS, Sceye and SoftBank conducted data processing directly on the platform, demonstrating average round-trip processing response time of 68 milliseconds, reducing communications latency by over 40% compared with internet-based cloud processing. This marks the world's first successful test in which a mobile core network and a web server for processing were installed on a HAPS, enabling response processing to be performed entirely onboard the HAPS and the results to be relayed back to smartphones.

ST1 remains in flight, returning towards the United States over the Pacific Ocean at the time of this announcement.

"SoftBank aims to build next-generation communications infrastructure that seamlessly connects the ground, the sky, and space. The fact that Sceye's HAPS reached Japan from the United States and successfully provided Japan's first trial services from the stratosphere in Japan's airspace marks an important step toward the commercialization of HAPS, which is at the core of this vision," said Junichi Miyakawa, President & CEO of SoftBank Corp. "By combining the HAPS flight and operational technologies that Sceye has developed with SoftBank's communications technologies, we have gained confidence to realize a three-dimensional communications network utilizing HAPS. Going forward, in collaboration with Sceye, we will continue to integrate a wide range of technologies, including communications and AI, to develop HAPS into a new form of social infrastructure."

This flight builds on Sceye's Endurance Program, completed earlier this year, when its SE2 HAPS traveled more than 10,000 km in the stratosphere from New Mexico to the coast of Brazil where it stayed over its area of operation for several days to test long-duration performance in preparation for the Service Test Program, the first of which flew to Japan.

'Rejoice in Christ': Salt Lake Temple Celebration Welcomes the World

Reservations open as Church leaders invite people everywhere to participate in person and online in 2027

SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday invited people around the world to participate in the 2027 Salt Lake Temple Celebration, announcing the event's theme, "Rejoice in Christ," and opening reservations for tours of the renovated Salt Lake Temple.

Church leaders, community representatives and guests gathered at the new West Temple Entrance Building on Temple Square on Tuesday morning for a media event focused on the celebration, its worldwide reach and the multiple opportunities to participate in person and online.

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a global church with a universal message of Jesus Christ in which we rejoice," said President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, chair of the Salt Lake Temple Executive Committee. "We're so grateful that we're here in a community where we're welcome. We invite you to come and see and love Jesus Christ and the people who come here."

The theme, "Rejoice in Christ," reflects the purpose of both the temple and the celebration. Church leaders said the six-month celebration (April 5–October 1, 2027) will center on Jesus Christ and invite visitors to learn more about His teachings, His gospel and His role in God's plan for His children.

President Uchtdorf noted that the invitation to rejoice in Christ extends beyond Temple Square. Referencing those suffering in Nepal and elsewhere around the world, he said followers of Jesus Christ seek to serve, pray for and bless others regardless of nationality, faith or circumstance.

"This is the reason why we rejoice in Christ," he said. "It's independent of which faith we have, which color we have, which language we speak, which socioeconomic background we have. In Jesus Christ, we unite in this wonderful time of rejoicing in Him."

The same phrase, "Rejoice in Christ," has also been selected as the Church's 2027 youth theme, creating an additional opportunity for young people around the world to focus on the Savior throughout the year.

Emily Belle Freeman, Young Women General President, noted that "Rejoice in Christ" comes from Philippians 4:4. She said the shared theme will help connect youth to both the Salt Lake Temple Celebration and the blessings of temple worship anywhere in the world.

"'I just love this thought of the youth all over the world rejoicing in all that we know about the house of the lord and the blessings that come from that knowledge," President Freeman said. "This will be a year of hallelujah. This will be a year of hosanna. This will be a year of rejoicing for us. I love that the youth will be part of that great year of rejoicing."

The temple celebration comes during a historic period of temple building for the Church around the world. In recent weeks, President Dallin H. Oaks dedicated the Belo Horizonte Brazil Temple, while visitors in Cambodia toured the Phnom Penh Cambodia Temple during its public open house. The Salt Lake Temple Celebration is part of a worldwide effort to help people better understand the purpose of temples and the role they play in drawing individuals and families to Jesus Christ. See the complete list of temples.

Other members of the Salt Lake Temple Executive Committee present for Tuesday's announcement were Elders Quentin L. Cook and Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson.

They emphasized that the Salt Lake Temple Celebration is a global event for everyone, regardless of faith tradition or background. Whether guests are longtime friends of the Church, first-time visitors to Temple Square or participating virtually from other parts of the world, all are invited to experience the temple and its message of faith, hope and belonging.

"We hope you will come and learn more about us," said President Johnson. "We hope you understand in a more complete way why we build houses of the Lord all over the world, what our intention is, that people will have a greater understanding of what motivates us — our love for God and our love for our neighbors. And importantly, I hope people will feel something. They'll feel that peace and love and help that Jesus Christ offers."

The announcement event offered the first look at new art glass depicting the Savior's Book of Mormon invitation to "behold your little ones" (3 Nephi 17:23). In this setting, Primary General President Rosemary K. Chibota spoke about the role of children and youth in the celebration. The leader of the Church's global program for children encouraged youth to learn about temples, ask questions, invite others to participate and draw closer to Jesus Christ.

"This is more than touring a building — a remarkable building," President Chibota said. "It is about coming closer to Jesus Christ. It is about feeling God's love for us and remembering that all of us are beloved children of our Heavenly Father."

After her remarks, a children's choir performed the well-known hymn "I Love to See the Temple."

Utah Governor Spencer Cox was also present for the announcement and welcomed the opportunity to host visitors from around the world, highlighting the Salt Lake Temple's significance to Utah's history and identity. He also noted the contributions of Church members whose faith, service and community involvement continue to shape the state.

"We are so grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their efforts in preserving this building," Governor Cox said. "[It is] one of the top tourist attractions in the state of Utah, one of the top tourist attractions anywhere in the United States."

He said the state expects millions of people to tour the temple in 2027. He noted that visitors will have an opportunity to learn about Utah's history and heritage while participating in the celebration.

"Thank you for giving the world this opportunity," the governor said. "We look forward to sharing it with you."

In addition to the temple open house, the Salt Lake Temple Celebration will feature exhibits, films, live music, visual arts, family history opportunities and other activities across Temple Square. Visitors will be able to explore the story of the temple's extensive renovation, learn about the sacred purpose of temples and participate in experiences designed for individuals and families of all ages.

The American Diabetes Association Audit and Governance Committee Releases Independent Review

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) Audit and Governance Committee (AGC) has released its independent review of events that took place on June 5, 2026, at the 2026 annual Scientific Sessions, in New Orleans, La. The ADA Board of Directors requested the AGC to present a full review of what occurred and provide recommended actions for the ADA to consider in the future.

Conclusive Findings

The comprehensive review concluded that the five attendees were removed due to conduct that disrupted the event and violated the ADA Attendee Code of Conduct, and that the content of the material that protesters were distributing was unrelated to their removal.

The report also found that onsite security personnel took appropriate actions in response to the disruptions; there was no evidence that a call was placed to the New Orleans Police Department by anyone from the ADA, though the report clarified that individuals wearing NOPD uniforms were working as contracted employees for the event security provider – a standard practice for large events held at the venue.

In addition, there were communication shortcomings between ADA staff, security, and attendees in the moments leading up to and during the disruptions.

Next Steps

"My hope is that now that the facts have been established, we can turn our full attention to the work ahead. Continuing our ongoing fight to protect diabetes research funding, advocating for the resources our communities need, and strengthening the support we provide to those we serve," said Charles "Chuck" Henderson, chief executive officer of the ADA.

Based on the AGC review, the ADA will implement important new initiatives to strengthen how we serve the scientific community, which includes improving our internal and external communications processes; ensuring leaders and staff understand their responsibilities in maintaining a safe, productive, and beneficial environment at Scientific Sessions and other ADA events; enhancing training and guidance for meeting and event staff and volunteers; reviewing, clarifying, and strengthening policies and procedures related to Scientific Sessions and other large meetings; and reinforcing expectations outlined in the ADA Attendee Code of Conduct.

"The ADA does critically important work for the diabetes community every day, and we are grateful to the members of the Audit and Governance Committee for the significant time, care and diligence they devoted to this review. Their work provides the Board with a clear path forward and an opportunity to strengthen the ADA. We remain confident in the leadership of ADA CEO Chuck Henderson and his ability to lead the ADA forward as we implement these actions, strengthen our partnerships across the scientific and professional communities, and remain focused on improving the lives of people with diabetes," said James Tai, chair of the ADA Board.

About the Audit and Governance Committee (AGC)

The AGC is an independent body composed of volunteer investigators representing every stakeholder group in the ADA: clinicians, people with diabetes, healthcare providers, and business leaders aligned with the ADA mission. Over a near three-month period, the committee interviewed 28 individuals involved in or with firsthand knowledge of the events of June 5th, including the five individuals who were removed. The committee also reviewed many videos, emails, text messages, news articles, and published editorials to develop a comprehensive factual understanding of the events.
