Findings indicate Legionella present in sinks, showers, hoses and other drinking water outlets;

Broader testing and prevention policy is needed, says prevention alliance

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent environmental sampling found Legionella bacteria, including live, culturable Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (LP1) present during the recent NYC outbreak in 17 percent of water samples from Upper East Side buildings in sinks, showers, hose bibs, and other points of potential exposure. The test results, commissioned by the Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires' Disease (APLD), were provided to the New York City Department of Health.

The testing, conducted for APLD by an independent consultant in mid-July, included 109 samples collected across zip codes 10128, 10028 and 10075 which the City identified as the outbreak area. Legionella was found in 19 buildings including in 10 exterior hose bibs, an initial point of entry for water from the municipal drinking water system into buildings, seven sinks, one shower and a decorative fountain. Positive samples had Legionella concentrations ranging from less than 1 to 390 CFU/mL, with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 identified in all three zip codes sampled. The samples also demonstrated very low chlorine treatment residuals as well averaging only 0.12 mg/L, well below an EPA workgroup recommended level of 0.5 mg/L. The City's testing during the outbreak focused on cooling towers only, per the current regulations and policy focus.

"New York City tested 183 cooling towers as part of its current investigation, yet it has not publicly identified comparable Legionella testing of distribution system water or building fixtures and plumbing systems before assuring residents it was safe to use," said Bob Bowcock, APLD board member, licensed water treatment operator and founder of Integrated Resource Management, a water system consulting group. "You cannot rule out a point of exposure you never tested. Cooling towers are only one part of a system that begins at the source and ends at the tap. Best practices recommendations for Legionnaires' disease prevention call for a comprehensive water management approach to be effective."

Testimony by APLD Board members at the September 2 NYC Council hearing questioned the city's focus only on cooling towers for Legionnaires' prevention. The findings from the test results raise a key question:Is New York's Legionnaires' prevention strategy too narrowly focused on one type of water equipment and certain healthcare facilities, while missing other exposure points in building water systems?

New York continues to carry one of the country's highest Legionnaires' burdens and the vast majority (96% per CDC) of Legionnaires' cases are sporadic, not tied to recognized outbreaks, suggesting prevention efforts must extend beyond high-profile clusters. And Legionnaires' cases in NY regularly hit the news tied to residential and other buildings including cases at NYCHA buildings in the Bronx, Harlem last winter and ongoing issues in the East Village in the last year alone. There are no protections currently in place to prevent these cases.

"Finding Legionella in a small, three-day sample of ordinary water fixtures across the outbreak area should be a wake up call for New York City health officials to conduct a more complete investigation of the water distribution system," said Bill McQuade, an APLD board member and immediate past-President of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). "These results demonstrate why no responsible investigation – or prevention strategy -- should focus exclusively on one risk factor. And while experts agree Legionnaires' disease is preventable, it requires a holistic and integrated approach"

Other states have adopted more comprehensive safeguards, including minimum disinfectant-residual standards for water treatment in public water systems, full building water management plans consistent with ASHRAE 188-2021, and more thorough epidemiological investigations. APLD has been supporting legislation at the state level that would put these source-to-tap policies in place modeled after a 2024 law passed in NJ and strong water quality regulations that have been in effect in Illinois since 2019.

"We encourage officials to adopt a more comprehensive Legionnaires' prevention plan following national recommendations and best practices given its toll in New York," said Bowcock.

The full testing report can be made available upon request.

Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock receives inaugural CARGO award from Inland Rivers, Ports and Terminals

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana, has been named one of the inaugural recipients of the CARGO Award, presented by Inland Rivers, Ports, and Terminals (IRPT) at its annual conference on Sept. 3.

IRPT is a nationwide, non-profit trade association founded in 1974 that represents and advocates for the United States inland waterway transportation system. The "CARGO" Award stands for Commitment to Advancing River Growth and Operations. IRPT created the award to recognize individuals whose careers reflect more than professional success — people who have helped move the inland waterways industry forward.

"We looked for people who have helped move this industry forward, and Jody Peacock has spent more than two decades doing exactly that," said Aimee Andres, executive director of Inland Rivers, Ports, and Terminals, in presenting the award. "He has helped grow ports, create opportunities for businesses and communities, and strengthened the connections between maritime transportation and economic development. It's my honor to recognize Jody and all the work he's done for our industry."

Jody has spent more than 25 years in the maritime industry, joining Ports of Indiana in 2001 and serving as CEO for the last three years. During his career, Jody has led transformation and growth initiatives throughout Indiana's three-port system and the maritime industry. He serves on numerous maritime and economic development boards supporting the growth of the nation's inland waterways and is a past recipient of the Distinguished Hoosier Award and the Sagamore of the Wabash, Indiana's highest civilian honor. Jody has been a driving force behind multiple regional cargo development strategies as well as the creation of Indiana's northern and southern port districts, which now rank as the #1 inland port in the country and the #2 Great Lakes port.

Jody was named CEO of Ports of Indiana in 2023, taking responsibility for a statewide port system that includes three ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan, 2,800 acres of multimodal industrial parks, three shortline railroads, and a statewide network of foreign-trade zones. Under his leadership, Ports of Indiana has achieved three consecutive years of unprecedented growth, secured the two largest federal grants in the organization's history, and opened its first new dock in two decades. The organization also established the largest general cargo operation on the Ohio River, started development of the state's first ocean container terminal, opened its first foreign office in Europe, and signed new partnership agreements with three international ports.

"Being recognized by the Inland Rivers, Ports, and Terminals is a tremendous honor, and to be an inaugural recipient of the CARGO Award means a great deal to me," said Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana. "Over the past few decades, I've come to believe that ports are more than places where cargo changes hands — they're engines for economic growth and gateways to the world. I'm honored to be part of IRPT, which has become such a dynamic and important organization, and to share the vision that our waterways offer tremendous opportunity, strategic advantages, and public benefits for our nation."

Throughout his career, Jody has helped develop the strategies and business initiatives that transformed Ports of Indiana from a government-funded agency into the self-funded, entrepreneurial organization it is today, contributing $8.7 billion annually to the state economy and supporting 50,000 jobs throughout the region.

Earlier this year, Jody was elected to IRPT's Board of Directors as a Great Lakes Basin director, helping to strengthen representation of the organization's Great Lakes members and better connect the Great Lakes and inland river systems.

In HelloNation, Financial Planning Expert David Jordan Explains How to Choose a Fee-Only Fiduciary Financial Advisor
Image File
Original HTML

The article outlines what families should consider when selecting long-term financial planning support and retirement guidance.

KENOSHA, Wis., Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- What should families look for when choosing a financial advisor they can trust for long-term financial planning? A HelloNation article featuring insights from David Jordan of Jordan Financial Life Planning in Kenosha, Wisconsin, explains how families may evaluate advisors, understand fiduciary responsibilities, and prepare for future financial decisions.

The article explains that choosing a financial advisor is an important decision for many households. Families often seek guidance with retirement planning, investment management, taxes, and long-term financial planning goals. The HelloNation article notes that understanding how advisors operate and how they are compensated may help families make more informed choices.

According to the article, one of the most important concepts families should understand is the fiduciary standard. A fiduciary financial advisor is legally required to place the client's interests first when making recommendations. The article explains that this responsibility may help reduce concerns about conflicts between financial advice and sales incentives.

The HelloNation article also describes the role of a fee-only fiduciary financial advisor. Unlike advisors who earn commissions from selling products, a fee-only fiduciary financial advisor is paid directly by clients for advice and planning services. The article notes that many families prefer this structure because it may provide greater transparency during the financial planning process.

Experience is another important factor discussed throughout the article. Some financial advisors focus primarily on investment management, while others specialize in retirement planning or broader financial planning strategies. The article explains that families may benefit from choosing a financial advisor whose experience aligns with their financial goals and life stage.

Professional certifications are also highlighted as an important consideration. The article notes that certifications may demonstrate additional education and training in financial planning. Families often look for credentials that help them feel more confident about an advisor's knowledge and ability to provide guidance over time.

Communication is presented as a key part of the advisor-client relationship. According to the article, some families prefer only occasional meetings, while others want regular conversations and updates regarding changing financial conditions. The HelloNation article explains that a fee-only fiduciary financial advisor should communicate clearly and explain financial decisions in language clients can understand comfortably.

Market volatility is another area where communication may become especially important. Investment values may fluctuate during uncertain economic periods, which can create stress for families. The article notes that clear explanations and steady communication from a financial advisor may help clients stay focused on long-term financial planning goals rather than short-term market reactions.

Retirement planning remains one of the most common reasons families seek financial advice. The article explains that many individuals need guidance regarding retirement accounts, Social Security benefits, taxes, and future healthcare costs. A fee-only fiduciary financial advisor may help families organize these areas into a strategy designed around expected retirement expenses and long-term needs.

The HelloNation article also emphasizes the importance of updating financial plans regularly. Financial needs may change because of career changes, marriage, children, retirement, or health concerns. The article notes that long-term financial planning often requires periodic reviews and adjustments to help families remain aligned with changing goals.

Transparency regarding services and fees is another topic addressed in the article. Families are encouraged to ask how fees are structured, what services are included, and how often meetings occur. The article explains that clear communication about expectations may help build trust between the advisor and the client over time.

The article concludes that selecting a financial advisor requires careful research and open communication. Comparing different advisors, asking questions, and understanding planning approaches may help families feel more confident about future financial decisions and long-term financial planning strategies.

How to Choose a Fee-Only Fiduciary Financial Advisor features insights from David Jordan, Financial Planning Expert of Kenosha, Wisconsin, in HelloNation.

Mid Island Y JCC Announces Historic Naming Gift from Dr. Harvey Manes and the Manes Peace Prize Foundation; Agency to Become Manes JCC

PLAINVIEW, N.Y., Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Mid Island Y JCC, Long Island's leading Jewish community center announced last night that it received a transformative naming gift from longtime member Dr. Harvey Manes and the Manes Peace Prize Foundation. In recognition of the gift, the agency will officially be renamed Manes JCC.

The announcement was made Wednesday evening during a community-wide celebration at the agency's Plainview location, drawing members, neighbors, and supporters from across Long Island. The event featured remarks from Mid Island Y JCC CEO Rick Lewis, board leadership, and Dr. Manes, along with the unveiling of the agency's new name.

"Philanthropy is not an add-on to what we do at Mid Island Y JCC; it is the reason our programs, spaces, and services exist today," said Rick Lewis, CEO of the agency soon to be known as Manes JCC. "We have grown and flourished for 70 years because people who believe in this community have chosen to invest in it. This gift from Dr. Harvey Manes and the Manes Peace Prize Foundation is the newest, and one of the most significant chapters in that story."

Dr. Manes is an orthopedic surgeon, attorney, author, and philanthropist. A longtime member of Mid Island Y JCC, his relationship with the agency began in an exercise class and deepened over time. He previously supported the naming of the agency's Arts and Culture Center, and that growing commitment has now culminated in this landmark gift from Dr. Manes and the Manes Peace Prize Foundation, which he oversees with his children.

"This organization has given so much to this community for so long, and I have felt that impact firsthand," said Dr. Manes. "The Manes Peace Prize Foundation and I are proud to be part of the next chapter of this agency, and we hope this gift will help it do even more for the people for our community and those who need it most."

The gift will fund a combination of immediate capital improvements and longer-term investments in the agency's facilities and programs. Three projects are already underway: resealing and restriping the parking lot ahead of members' return in September, installing a new floor in the group fitness studio, and replacing fitness center equipment that has been in place since the facility's 2012 renovation.

"These three projects are just the beginning," said Vicki Diamond, President of the Manes JCC Board of Directors. "In the coming weeks and months, our board and leadership will determine how the remainder of this extraordinary gift will be put to work, and we cannot wait to share those plans with our community as they take shape."

Agency leaders regard the gift as transformative while recognizing the ongoing generosity that has always sustained the organization.

"We are beyond grateful to Dr. Harvey Manes and the Manes Peace Prize Foundation," Diamond added. "This gift is not a finish line. It is fuel for a community that has always shown up for itself and one that we are counting on to continue showing up."

The name change represents an investment in the organization's future, not a change to its mission. Manes JCC will continue to operate as a Jewish Community Center serving individuals and families of every age, background, and faith. Its programs and services span early childhood education and daycare, camp, school-age enrichment, fitness and aquatics, adult and senior services, memory care, special needs programming, and community-wide events.

About Manes JCC

Formerly known as Mid Island Y JCC, Manes JCC is a nonprofit Jewish Community Center whose programs, services, partnerships, and community impact reach individuals and families throughout Long Island. Esthetics Expert Valen Perez Explains How Proper Post-Facial Care Extends Results in HelloNation
Image File
Original HTML

The article explains how hydration, sun protection, gentle skincare, and proper recovery can help maintain the benefits of a professional facial.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- What determines whether a facial's glow lasts beyond a few days? A HelloNation article addresses this question by featuring insights from Valen Perez of Picture Perfect Esthetics LLC in Fayetteville, NC, outlining why post-facial care is an essential part of any facial treatment rather than an afterthought.

The article explains that while a professional facial can leave the skin smoother, brighter, and deeply hydrated, the days that follow directly affect how long those results remain visible. After exfoliation, extractions, enzymes, and professional serums, the skin becomes more active. Circulation and cell turnover increase, which supports renewal but can also leave the barrier temporarily more sensitive.

According to the HelloNation feature, mild redness, warmth, or sensitivity are normal responses after a facial treatment. Proper post-facial care prevents these temporary reactions from developing into irritation. The article emphasizes that recovery should focus on protection and repair instead of additional correction.

Hydration is described as the first priority. Facials can temporarily increase water loss from the skin, leading to tightness if moisture is not restored. The article highlights that gentle, hydrating products reinforce the skin barrier and help maintain comfort. Strong actives, heavy fragrances, or aggressive treatments immediately after a facial can interfere with healing and should be avoided during this period.

The article also discusses the importance of pausing exfoliating products. Scrubs, retinoids, and strong acids are typically set aside for several days, depending on the intensity of the facial treatment. Gentle skincare supports even barrier recovery, while rushing to resume active ingredients can increase sensitivity, breakouts, or unwanted pigmentation.

Sun protection is identified as non-negotiable in any post-facial care plan. The HelloNation article explains that freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to ultraviolet exposure. Without consistent sunscreen use, inflammation and dark spots may develop, reversing progress made during the treatment. In Fayetteville, sun exposure occurs year-round, even during short outdoor activities or while driving, making daily protection essential.

Common concerns, such as minor breakouts, are also addressed. The article notes that deep cleansing or extractions may bring existing congestion to the surface. Rather than indicating that the facial caused acne, this response often reflects the skin's clearing process. Picking or applying harsh spot treatments can delay recovery, while calming, barrier-focused products typically resolve the issue more predictably.

Climate considerations in Fayetteville are another important factor. Heat and humidity can increase post-treatment sensitivity, especially after exfoliating or technology-based facials. The article explains that short-term adjustments, such as limiting prolonged sun exposure or intense workouts, may support smoother healing.

For advanced facial treatments, structured aftercare becomes even more important. The HelloNation feature highlights that a customized skincare plan may temporarily shift from corrective products to barrier repair. Knowing when to safely reintroduce active ingredients helps maintain progress without compromising the skin.

The article also stresses the value of setting realistic expectations. Slight redness, mild flaking, or temporary sensitivity can be part of normal recovery. Clear professional skincare guidance helps clients distinguish typical healing from reactions that require attention.

Consistency beyond the first 48 hours is presented as essential. Maintaining gentle skincare, hydration, and daily sun protection extends the visible benefits of a facial treatment. The article cautions against introducing new products too quickly, noting that simplicity during recovery leads to more predictable outcomes.

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).
