Americase International Regulatory Expert Contributes to OCP Guidance on Data Center Energy Storage Safety

HazMat Safety Consulting's Mike Pagel contributes dangerous goods and regulatory expertise to OCP guidance for safe energy storage deployment in data centers

WAXAHACHIE, Texas, Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Americase International, a provider of mission-critical protection, testing and dangerous goods compliance solutions, today announced that Mike Pagel, Principal Consultant with its HazMat Safety Consulting subsidiary and a contributing author to the Open Compute Project (OCP) white paper, Requirements for Energy Storage Systems Used in Data Centers, helped inform the paper's guidance on dangerous goods transportation, regulatory compliance and lifecycle safety for energy storage systems used in data centers.

The January 2026 white paper provides guidance for the safe design, operation and maintenance of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) used in data centers as AI and high-performance computing increase power density, load variability and infrastructure complexity.

As AI and high-performance computing workloads drive greater demands on data center power infrastructure, energy storage is becoming increasingly important across configurations ranging from rack-level battery backup units (BBUs) to centralized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and larger battery energy storage systems (BESS). The OCP white paper addresses safety and regulatory considerations including battery chemistry, testing, fire protection, transportation, emergency response and end-of-life management.

The guidance is particularly relevant for data center operators, hyperscalers, colocation providers, battery manufacturers and infrastructure teams because ESS safety extends beyond installation inside the data center. Batteries and battery-powered equipment may also be subject to transportation, testing, packaging, documentation, emergency response and end-of-life requirements across their lifecycle.

"Calling something a lithium battery tells you almost nothing about how it will actually behave," said Mike Pagel, Principal Consultant, HazMat Safety Consulting. "Form factor and chemistry produce materially different hazards, and the only way to know is to test it; you don't know what you don't know until you do. That's why this guidance treats testing, not just chemistry, as central. Standards such as The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 855 establish important safety requirements, while testing, such as under UL 9540A, helps evaluate how a system actually responds to thermal runaway, rather than assuming behavior based on battery type alone."

Addressing Data Center Energy Storage Risks

The OCP guidance examines energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion, nickel-zinc, lead-acid, sodium-ion and supercapacitor systems, each with different risk profiles based on chemistry, system architecture and application. It also addresses higher-voltage power architectures and the electrical and stored-energy hazards requiring specialized controls, training and qualified personnel.

Testing and validation are central to the recommendations. The paper references the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 855 requirements for ESS and ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A 5th Edition (2025) for evaluating thermal runaway and fire propagation characteristics. For lithium-ion systems, the guidance also addresses detection, mitigation and emergency response strategies associated with thermal runaway and fire risk.

Key Standards and Requirements Addressed

Among the standards, testing protocols and regulatory considerations discussed in the OCP guidance are:

- NFPA 855 — requirements addressing the installation and safety of stationary energy storage systems.

- ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A, 5th Edition (2025) — testing used to evaluate thermal runaway and fire propagation characteristics of battery energy storage systems.

- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Sub-section 38.3 — testing requirements applicable to lithium battery design types prior to transportation.

- Dangerous goods transportation requirements — including applicable packaging, marking, labeling, documentation and training obligations for lithium batteries and battery-powered equipment.

Lithium Battery Transportation Requirements for Data Centers

The guidance highlights transportation requirements for lithium-ion batteries and battery-powered equipment, including data center battery backup units that may fall under dangerous goods regulations. Applicable requirements can include testing, packaging, marking, labeling, documentation and training, as well as successful completion of UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Sub-section 38.3 testing for lithium battery design types.

These requirements can apply at multiple points in the data center equipment lifecycle, including initial deployment, replacement, return, repair, redeployment and end-of-life shipment.

HazMat Safety Consulting (HSC), an Americase International company, advises organizations on regulatory requirements governing the transportation, storage and handling of lithium batteries and other dangerous goods, while Americase and Fulcrum Testing provide complementary packaging, containment and testing capabilities across the battery lifecycle.

Managing Risk Across the ESS Lifecycle

The OCP paper takes a lifecycle approach to ESS safety, addressing considerations from system selection and transportation through installation, operation, maintenance, emergency response and decommissioning. It also addresses Hazard Mitigation Analysis as a tool for evaluating risks associated with thermal runaway, mechanical failure and supporting systems.

"For data center operators, energy storage safety cannot be treated as a single event that begins when a battery enters the facility and ends once it is installed," said Robby Kinsala, CEO of Americase International. "The risks and regulatory responsibilities can extend from transportation and deployment through operation, maintenance, replacement and end-of-life. The OCP white paper provides an important framework for bringing those considerations together as data centers scale energy storage to support next-generation computing."

OCP's Energy Storage Systems workstream brings together industry stakeholders to develop common requirements and guidance for safe, reliable ESS adoption across data center environments. The Requirements for Energy Storage Systems Used in Data Centers white paper was published in January 2026 and is available through the Open Compute Project.

City of North Charleston Raises Awareness of 7-OH Risks as Federal Scrutiny Increases
Image File
Original HTML

While 7-OH occurs naturally in very small amounts in the kratom plant, concentrated and synthetic 7-OH products are different from traditional kratom leaf. These products may contain significantly elevated amounts of 7-OH and are commonly sold as tablets, gummies, powders, drink mixes, shots and dissolvable strips.

Federal health officials are increasingly sounding the alarm.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes concentrated 7-OH products as potent opioid products that have not been proven safe or effective for any use. The FDA has received reports of adverse effects associated with 7-OH products, including addiction, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal distress, insomnia, seizures and withdrawal symptoms. There are currently no FDA-approved drugs containing 7-OH.

In July 2026, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced its intent to temporarily place certain 7-OH substances into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, citing their high potential for abuse and lack of an accepted medical use. The proposed federal action targets synthetic 7-OH and products containing elevated concentrations rather than botanical kratom containing naturally occurring trace levels.

Products Can Be Easy to Overlook

Part of the concern is how these substances are sold and marketed.

Concentrated 7-OH can appear in products that may not immediately look like opioids. Products are available in forms such as flavored gummies, tablets and small drink shots, and may be marketed using terms such as 7-OH, 7-Hydroxy, 7-HMG, 7-OHMG or 7-OH-mitragynine.

The FDA has warned that some products promoted as "enhanced" or "spiked" kratom may also contain substantially more 7-OH than would naturally occur in kratom leaf.

This makes awareness particularly important for parents, caregivers and community members who may not recognize these products or understand their potential risks.

What Residents Should Know

The City encourages residents to:

- Know what 7-OH looks like. Be aware that it may be sold as tablets, gummies, powders, shots and other products.

- Look beyond the word "kratom." Packaging may instead use names such as 7-OH, 7-Hydroxy or 7-HMG.

- Do not assume a product is safe because it is available for purchase. The FDA states that there are no FDA-approved drugs containing 7-OH and recommends that consumers avoid 7-OH products.

- Talk openly with teens and young adults. Discuss the risks of using substances purchased online, at convenience stores, smoke shops or from friends.

- Recognize signs of dependence. Regular use can lead to cravings, withdrawal symptoms and difficulty stopping.

- Seek credible help. People who are concerned about their own substance use or that of someone they care about should turn to qualified health care professionals and trusted recovery resources.

The City also urges residents to be cautious about products or online services claiming to provide a quick solution for 7-OH dependence. As awareness of 7-OH grows and regulations change, companies are increasingly advertising products and services directly to people seeking to reduce or stop their use. No medication containing 7-OH has been approved by the FDA to treat withdrawal, addiction or any other medical condition.

Recovery Is Possible. Help Is Available.

For individuals struggling with 7-OH, kratom, opioids or other substances — and for family members concerned about someone they love — help is available in the community.

CASE ALLEGATIONS: Wix operates a cloud-based web development platform and offers various services that allow users to create, customize, and manage professional websites. In June 2025, Wix acquired Base44, a so-called "vibe coding" platform designed to enable users to build apps and websites simply by typing descriptions, without the need for any coding experience.

The Wix class action lawsuit alleges that defendants throughout the Class Period made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (i) Wix had overstated the competitiveness and performance of its AI product offerings relative to those offered by other companies; (ii) Wix had understated the costs associated with developing and promoting its AI product offerings; and (iii) accordingly, defendants overstated the commercial and financial benefits of Wix' AI product offerings.

On May 21, 2025, Wix issued a press release reporting its financial results for the first quarter of 2025, allegedly revealing that Wix maintained its 2025 revenue guidance in the range of $1.97 billion to $2 billion, falling short of analyst expectations. On this news, the price of Wix stock fell more than 16%, according to the complaint.

On November 19, 2025, Wix reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2025, allegedly disclosing that its rising post-acquisition costs to support Base44 were having a material negative impact on Wix' financial results and mitigating the positive impacts of AI-related tailwinds. On this news, the price of Wix stock dropped nearly 20%, according to the complaint.

On March 27, 2026, JPMorgan issued a report on Wix, allegedly downgrading it to an "Underweight" from "Neutral" rating, and cutting its price target to $91.00 from $114.00. The complaint alleges that JPMorgan explained "our conviction to the investment case has diminished on signs of core business revenue growth deceleration," and expressed concern "that margin improvement will be slower and more volatile than investors anticipate." On this news, the price of Wix stock fell nearly 3% further, according to the complaint.

Then, on April 2, 2026, UBS issued a report on Wix, allegedly downgrading it to a "Neutral" from "Buy" rating, and cutting its price target to $96.00 from $145.00, "after re-evaluating its growth algorithm for the core business and its margin profile." On this news, the price of Wix stock declined nearly 10% further, according to the complaint.

On April 7, 2026, Citizens issued an investor note on Wix, allegedly downgrading it to a "Market Perform" from "Market Outperform" rating based on, among other things, increased costs associated with Base44 and competition concerns. On this news, the price of Wix stock fell nearly 4% further, according to the complaint.

Finally, on May 13, 2026, Wix reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2026, allegedly disclosing earnings and revenue below consensus expectations, and a sharp decline in operating margins that it largely attributed to softness in its professional developer business. On a related earnings call held the same day, defendants allegedly acknowledged that Wix' professional developer customers were using competing AI tools, that Wix' new Wix Harmony platform had "holes" and "missing capabilities," that there had been delays in delivering product updates and innovation to professional developer customers, and that as a result, Wix had fallen behind "the workflow and the needs of" professional developers. On this news, the price of Wix stock fell more than 27%, according to the complaint.

THE LEAD PLAINTIFF PROCESS: The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 permits any investor who purchased or acquired Wix securities during the Class Period to seek appointment as lead plaintiff in the Wix class action lawsuit. A lead plaintiff is generally the movant with the greatest financial interest in the relief sought by the putative class who is also typical and adequate of the putative class. A lead plaintiff acts on behalf of all other class members in directing the Wix class action lawsuit. The lead plaintiff can select a law firm of its choice to litigate the Wix class action lawsuit. An investor's ability to share in any potential future recovery is not dependent upon serving as lead plaintiff of the Wix class action lawsuit.

Dacon Corporation, indus, and VMD Companies Celebrate Major Construction Milestone with Cross Beam Signing Ceremony
Image File
Original HTML

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass., Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Dacon Corporation and VMD Companies gathered to celebrate a significant construction milestone with a ceremonial cross beam signing, marking the continued progress of indus Headquarters. The event brought together project stakeholders, design and construction teams, community partners, and guests to recognize the collaboration, innovation, and craftsmanship driving the development forward.

The signed structural beam, now permanently incorporated into the building, symbolizes the teamwork and shared commitment that have guided the project from concept through construction.

From early design and planning through construction, Dacon partnered closely with the project team to deliver solutions that improved efficiency, reduced risk, and supported the client's long-term operational goals.

"From our founding in 1957, indus (formerly Sealcoating Inc.) has taken pride in being able to solve problems, explore new ideas, and take on unfamiliar opportunities ourselves. Finding the right area, building a new facility, and creating our new home has been in the works for years, and we knew we had to nail it for the whole indus family. Early in the process, we realized we'd need to team up with the best of the best to get the results we dreamed of from this venture. We felt that with proper preparation and extensive vetting, we would find the dream team to partner with. As soon as we met with the teams from VMD and Dacon, we knew we were shaking the right hands. In the construction industry, the very first and most important thing you build is a meaningful relationship with the people involved in a project. As soon as we walked out of the introduction meeting, we realized we shared the same passion for people and projects, which gave us peace of mind and excitement for the future. Dacon and VMD's vision of our new home was perfectly in line with ours from the start; the communication and inclusion in all aspects of the job are exactly what we were hoping for and needed in a partnership, and everything that they have delivered has been done with honesty, integrity, and a team-first mentality. We couldn't have asked for better partners on this project that starts the next chapter for indus. We thank everyone who has set foot on this job site for their hard work, dedication, and input toward our vision of indus's future. Today was a great day for the whole team and our new community, and one of many celebrations to come at our new home!" said indus leadership.

The 96,500 square-foot indus headquarters is being developed to support the company's relocation and expansion from Braintree to Middleborough, bringing its operations together in a purpose-built facility. The building will include office space for approximately 50 employees, training rooms, locker room facilities, warehouse storage for building materials, and dedicated space for complex machinery maintenance and painting, anchored by a 14-bay maintenance and repair shop which will accommodate the oversized trucks and equipment essential to indus's pavement repair operations. The project also required significant site preparation, as the site was a decommissioned cranberry bog. Extensive earthwork was required to bring the site to grade, and dynamic soil compaction was used to address the organic soils and achieve the bearing requirements necessary for construction.

"We are proud to welcome indus to The Campus at Canopy Drive," said Phil Down, CEO of VMD Companies. "This project represents a significant investment in the Town of Middleborough and will bring good jobs and revenue to the community. VMD is pleased to have worked with the town and with Dacon Corporation to deliver indus a modern facility purpose-built for their operations. We congratulate the entire project team on reaching this construction milestone and look forward to delivering additional high-quality facilities to support the region's growing businesses."

"Forty-one years in this business has taught me that the best projects aren't just buildings, they're stories. And this one has a story worth telling," said Kevin Quinn, President and CEO of Dacon Corporation. "Before a single beam could rise, our team had to engineer and transform what was once a cranberry bog into the foundation for a world-class facility. That kind of challenge is where Dacon thrives, and it's a testament to the craftsmanship and grit of every tradesperson, subcontractor, and field team member who showed up every day and made it happen."

The project demonstrates the value of an integrated design-build approach in addressing complex site and operational requirements. Precast concrete panels were selected for the exterior building envelope, combining structural and architectural elements into a single prefabricated system that allowed for efficient assembly. Through close collaboration among Dacon's design and engineering teams, architectural and structural partners, and the project team, potential conflicts were identified and addressed early in the process, helping support a coordinated path from design through construction.

Quinn continued, "No project like this gets built alone. The collaboration between Dacon, VMD Companies, and the entire indus team was exceptional from day one; a shared commitment to quality, precision, and getting it right. indus keeps the Northeast, and beyond our borders, moving, and it has been an honor to build a facility that supports that mission. I couldn't be prouder of everyone who made it possible."

In recognition of the milestone, Dacon, indus and VMD Companies also presented a $12,500 donation through Dacon's Designed with Dignity community giving program to Hannah B.G. Shaw Home, supporting its mission to provide compassionate care and services for individuals and families in need.

The contribution reflects Dacon's ongoing commitment to strengthening the communities where it builds and investing in organizations making a meaningful local impact.

With structural work continuing to advance, the project team remains focused on safely delivering the next phase of construction while maintaining the quality, schedule, and collaborative approach that have defined the project.

1-800-GOT-JUNK? - THE "GREAT JUNK TRANSFER": THE HIDDEN EMOTIONAL TOLL OF INHERITING A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES

New survey finds nearly half of people would rather inherit nothing than deal with a loved one's belongings

VANCOUVER, BC , Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ --

BACKGROUND:

The next big inheritance story isn't about money: it's about the things we leave behind. For millions of families, losing a parent or grandparent also means inheriting a lifetime of possessions and the difficult decisions that come with them. Sorting through photo albums, handwritten letters, furniture, holiday decorations, and a basement full of boxes can become an overwhelming part of the grieving process.

This growing phenomenon is known as the "Great Junk Transfer" and new research reveals its hidden emotional toll. This summer, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? commissioned research administered online by Talker Research, surveying 2,200 adults across the United States, Canada, and Australia. The findings reveal that inheriting a loved one's belongings is often as emotionally complicated as it is physically overwhelming.

Findings include:

- Nearly half (48%) said they would rather inherit nothing at all than deal with a loved one's belongings.

- 60% feel guilty or obligated to keep family items they don't actually want.

- 54% said sorting through a relative's belongings made the grieving process more difficult.

- One in four families (26%) never discuss inheritance plans before a loved one passes away.

- About half (49%) said sentimental value is the primary reason they hold on to inherited possessions.

- When asked how many items people would prefer to inherit, the most common answer was just 1-5 items.

In this segment, Brian Scudamore, Founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, discusses why families need to start talking openly about what will happen to their belongings after they're gone. He also shares insights from the new survey, explains the emotional burden families face during the "Great Junk Transfer," and offers simple steps people can take now to make the process easier later.
