Sunbury – November 03, 2026 -- Weis Markets, Inc. (NYSE: WMK) reported third-quarter net income of $22.21 million, up 31.4% from $16.90 million a year earlier, as a wider gross margin offset softer grocery-category sales. Earnings per share rose to $0.90 from $0.69 for the 13-week period ended September 26, 2026.
Total revenue climbs 3.0% to $1.28 billion on fuel and new stores
Revenue compared with $1.24 billion in the prior-year quarter. Higher fuel sales, reflecting both retail price inflation and more gallons sold, and sales from new stores drove the growth. Lower sales in pharmacy, dairy and produce partially offset it.
Comparable store sales rose 1.3%, but excluding fuel they fell 1.2%. CEO Jonathan H. Weis said customers "remained cautious with their spending" and continue to seek affordability and value.
Inflation Reduction Act pricing trims pharmacy sales by $14.56 million
Medicare maximum fair price provisions, effective January 1, 2026, cut pharmacy sales by approximately $14.56 million in the quarter. That reduced total revenue growth by about 1.2 percentage points. Dairy sales fell on lower egg prices versus the prior year, and produce demand dropped during the Cyclospora outbreak.
Gross margin widens to 25.5% as shrink and supply chain costs improve
Gross profit rose 5.8% to $324.61 million, and gross margin increased to 25.5% from 24.8%. Management credited better store inventory shrink performance and lower costs within its internal supply chain.
Income from operations climbed 38.6% to $28.51 million. That more than offset lower investment income and a higher effective income tax rate. The company said it is supporting shoppers through price investments and an expanded loyalty marketing program.
Year-to-date revenue rises 4.1% to $3.81 billion, EPS reaches $2.95
For the 39 weeks, revenue grew to $3.81 billion from $3.66 billion. Comparable store sales rose 1.9%, while comparable sales excluding fuel declined 0.1%. Pharmacy sales, though higher year to date, absorbed approximately $32.75 million in pricing headwinds from the Medicare provisions, trimming revenue growth by about 0.9 percentage points.
Year-to-date gross profit increased 7.8% to $983.26 million, with margin at 25.9% versus 25.0%. Operating income rose 28.6% to $93.31 million. Net income reached $72.92 million, up 18.1% from $61.73 million, and EPS was $2.95 versus $2.38.
