Southwest Adds Platinum Tier, Intl. Partners and Starlink WiFi

Dallas -- Starting January 1, 2027, Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards members get a new Platinum tier with unlimited Companion Pass trips, a faster route to status for credit cardholders, and points that work for seats and rental cars. The airline also plans a fleetwide Starlink WiFi rollout and a branded lounge network.

Platinum joins a renamed tier lineup in January 2027

A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold. Platinum sits above both and includes unlimited Companion Pass trips. Rapid Rewards keeps its no-blackout-dates policy and points that don't expire. Members can still earn tier status through Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or qualifying flights.

Milestone Rewards arrive before members hit a new tier

Members will no longer have to wait for a new tier to receive a reward. Before reaching Silver, they can choose rewards such as Rapid Rewards points or seat certificates. Between Gold and Platinum, members can qualify for three Companion Pass trips.

Every Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmember, including Plus Cardmembers, will earn one TQP per dollar spent on purchases with a Rapid Rewards Credit Card from Chase.

Points will work on partner airlines, seats and rental cars

In spring 2027, members can earn and redeem points on Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad Airways. The partnerships open routes from Reykjavik to Paris, Taipei to Tokyo, and Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg.

Later in 2027, points can pay for seat selection on Southwest-operated flights, including Extra Legroom and Preferred seats. Redemption is available after booking and ticketing and before check-in. It is not available at the airport, including kiosks or the gate. Starting in November 2026, members can redeem points for rental cars through cars.southwest.com across all participating car rental partners.

Southwest Icon Lounges open in late 2027

Southwest is building the Southwest Icon Lounge network with Chase, with premium amenities and local design. The name nods to the airline's 55-year legacy. Access comes through a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card from Chase, launching in 2027.

Starlink is set to cover the whole fleet by fall 2027

Southwest expects to become the first major U.S. airline to finish a fleetwide Starlink rollout in fall 2027. WiFi is free for Rapid Rewards members, thanks to T-Mobile, where available and on WiFi-enabled designated aircraft.

Nandika Suri, Vice President of Rapid Rewards, said the changes respond to member feedback asking for more meaningful rewards.
