Snapchat’s Family Center: A New Talking Point Not a Tool
Image File

Reviews

This month, Snap, Inc. (“Snap”) announced a new safety tool called Family Center. Unfortunately, after review, the Organization for Social Media Safety believes that it will not have any meaningful impact on child safety.

With Snapchat’s Family Center, parents, after requesting permission from their child, can see a list of who their child is friends with on Snapchat and which of those friends they have communicated with over the last seven days. Snap confirmed that the tool will provide parents no insight into “the substance of those conversations.”

Why Snapchat’s Family Center Is Not a Serious Safety Offering:

(1) Secret Accounts: By enabling parents to identify suspicious Snapchat accounts that their child has connected with, Snapchat presumably intends this new feature to deter or prevent children from engaging in certain high-risk activities, like drug seeking or communicating with adult strangers. However, if a teen is intent on engaging in such activities through Snapchat then they likely will, or may already, be using a second, secret account. Parents will have no ability to monitor a child’s secret Snapchat accounts with this new feature (and currently have little to no ability to conduct such monitoring otherwise.) So while a parent can connect the Family Center tool to a child’s main account, with which a child can conduct most of their Snapchat activities, that child can easily employ a secret account for high-risk activities without any parental oversight whatsoever.

Snap has said in response to this concern that “if a person does have multiple accounts they would have to fully log out of the app to toggle between them.” In a test, we found it takes about four seconds to accomplish this toggling, which, coincidentally, is the same amount of time it takes us to access the Family Center from the home screen.

(2) Redundant: As discussed, Family Center offers parents the ability to see who their child is friends with on Snapchat. However, parents have always been able to see their child’s friend list by directly reviewing their child’s account. We do not understand why Snap used months of valuable time and resources to offer a capability that parents already have.

(The Family Center does offer the added ability for the parent to see, only within the past seven days, if a child communicated with someone that they then removed as a friend on Snapchat. However, if a child is actively removing Snapchat friends to avoid detection, then that child would likely just create a secret account as discussed above.)

(3) Impractical for Parents: If the objective of Snapchat’s Family Center is to help parents identify users with whom their child should not be communicating, then this tool is highly inefficient for most parents. First, teens can have hundreds of Snapchat friends and are regularly adding more. And teens send a lot of messages, called snaps, with some teens even sending hundreds of thousands per year. We do not believe that the average, busy parent will be able to undertake a weekly review of the lengthy list of their child’s Snapchat friends and identify the one or two suspicious connections. (Bizarrely, the Family Center tool seemingly offers no ability for parents to be alerted when their child has a new Snapchat connection.)

In addition, the Family Center tool only shows parents the registered names of their child’s friends on Snapchat, which is generally insufficient for these purposes. Unfortunately, teens often do not register on Snapchat with their actual names, simply using first names, nicknames, or phrases. So, even with this tool, a parent will usually have a very limited ability to identify who a child’s Snapchat friends actually are, meaning parents will have to either take their child’s word for who they are connecting with, just as before this tool was available, or undertake some heroic verification process, on a weekly basis.

(4) Useless for the Most Common, Major Risks: Based on our observation, the most common dangers facing children from Snapchat use come from interactions with peers they actually know in person. The long list of such dangers includes cyberbullying, sexting, depression, self-harm, violence, sexual harassment, hate speech, and substance abuse. Generally, Family Center, which focuses on assisting parents to identify Snapchat friends who are not known to the child, provides parents with no way to increase protection against the danger of using Snapchat with known peers.

How To Start Using the New Family Center Tool:

To be able to use the new Family Center tool, parents need to:

(1) Create their own Snapchat account.

(2) In the new parent account: Make a request to connect with your child.

(3) In the child’s account: The child must accept the request to connect.

(4) In the parent account: Using the magnifying glass tool on the home screen, search for and click on “Family Center”.

(5) In the parent account: Search for and add the child to the Family Center dashboard.

(6) In the child’s account: Have the child approve the invitation to be added to your Family Center dashboard.

How To Maximize the Safety Benefits of the New Family Center

The best way to make use of the new Family Center is to use it in conjunction with our Buckling the Social Media Seatbelt System:

- Conversations: Discuss with your child why you will be using the Family Center tool.  This conversation should include a review of the dangers of connecting with anyone on social media that your child does not know in real life.

-  Rules: Especially for younger teens, consider setting a rule that your child is not allowed to connect with anyone on Snapchat who they do not know in real life and who is not their own age.  Also, especially for younger or higher-risk teens, consider limiting your child’s Snapchat friends to a reasonable number, which would make reviewing their Snapchat friend list through Family Center more practical for parents.  If your child violates these rules or any other social media safety rule, consider letting them know in advance that they will lose Snapchat and/or their mobile devices for a certain amount of time.

- Calibrate the Settings: Using your operating system or third-party safety app to restrict the amount of time that your child can use Snapchat will lessen the number of messages that they can send, potentially making the Family Center tool more practical for you by creating fewer connections for you to review. You can also use these settings to restrict Snapchat use if your child violates your social media safety rules. (See our free, parent course for instructions.)

Finally, please consider carefully whether your child is ready to use Snapchat. Many children have been harmed through using the platform, so we suggest real caution. According to Snapchat’s own terms of service, children under 13 should not be using the platform.

Snap Needs To Do Better To Protect Children

After months of promising action in the wake of numerous child deaths connected to Snapchat use, Snap finally launched this new safety feature. The weakness of Snapchat’s Family Center is offensive in the face of the ongoing harm linked to the platform. Significantly more effective safety options are available to Snap, yet it chooses to prioritize this incredibly limited one. For the health and safety of our children, Snap must do better.

This tool is new, and we will continue to reassess its effectiveness. Please let us know about your family’s experience with it.

Why This Report Matters

- Chip designers and cloud infrastructure buyers can assess packaging constraints alongside memory supply when planning AI accelerator procurement.

- Foundries, memory manufacturers and outsourced assembly firms can distinguish TSV and silicon-interposer services from broader advanced packaging categories.

- Investors can evaluate the impact of HBM stack height, yield and packaging capacity without double-counting the value of the underlying semiconductor dies.

Market Overview

Through-silicon vias are vertical conductive paths etched through thinned silicon dies. They enable memory layers to be stacked into high-bandwidth memory packages and help connect complex systems through silicon interposers. These structures support AI accelerators that require wide memory interfaces and high data throughput.

The market is narrower than all advanced packaging. Its value is tied to via formation, interposers and stacking services, not the full price of a GPU or memory device. HBM4 and larger AI packages raise technical demands for wafer thinning, bonding, defect inspection and thermal management.

Market Insights

- HBM and other memory accounted for 46.0% of 2025 application revenue.

- 2.5D integration led technology categories with 38.0% of 2025 value.

- Data centers and high-performance computing held 55.0% of end-use spending.

- Die-to-wafer integration accounted for 48.0% of value, reflecting established stacking processes.

- North America led demand at 35.0% in 2025, while Asia Pacific held 33.0% and hosts much of the production capacity.

Key Attributes

Market Segmentation

The segmentation below follows the current report taxonomy and separates products, applications and buyers to avoid overlapping revenue definitions.

- By technology: 2.5D integration; 3D TSV stacking; Chip-on-wafer and chip-on-wafer-on-substrate; Heterogeneous integration.

- By application: HBM and memory; Processors and AI accelerators; CMOS image sensors; MEMS; RF devices.

- By end use: Data centers and HPC; Consumer electronics; Automotive; Telecommunications; Industrial.

- By integration: Die-to-wafer; Wafer-to-wafer; Die-to-die and chiplet.

- By material: Silicon; Metal interconnects; Dielectrics; Organic and glass interposers.

- By provider: Integrated device manufacturers; Foundries; Outsourced assembly and test providers.

Market Drivers

AI accelerators use multiple HBM stacks beside processor dies, creating demand for more vias and larger interposers per package. Memory bandwidth has become a central constraint in AI system design.

Chiplet architectures let designers combine dies made on different processes. Dense interconnects and stacking improve performance but increase the need for precise alignment, bonding and testing.

Packaging investment in the United States and Asia is expanding capacity, although new plants require long qualification periods and can face construction delays. Long-term commitments from large customers influence utilization.

Regional Analysis

The following regional shares represent Credence Research estimates of 2025 market value. They are not independently audited supplier sales totals.

North America | 35.0% share in 2025

U.S. AI accelerator designers and cloud buyers account for a large share of demand, even when assembly occurs in Asia. Domestic packaging investment is expanding.

Asia Pacific | 33.0% share in 2025

Taiwan, South Korea and Japan host major HBM producers, foundries and outsourced packaging capacity. The region remains central to production and yield learning.

Europe | 22.0% share in 2025

Automotive, industrial and research buyers consume advanced packaged devices, with limited regional volume stacking capacity.

Middle East and Africa | 6.0% share in 2025

AI data center investment supports the fastest modeled demand growth from a relatively small base, primarily through imported accelerators.

Latin America | 4.0% share in 2025

Imported servers, electronics and industrial systems drive consumption rather than a large local TSV manufacturing base.

Market Challenges

TSV fabrication requires etching, insulation, metal filling, wafer thinning and bonding. Each step creates yield risk, and one failed die can reduce the value of a complex multi-die package.

Heat removal and mechanical stress become harder with taller stacks. Alternative bridge and organic-interposer approaches can also displace TSV-intensive designs in products where full silicon interposers are too expensive.

Future Outlook

HBM stack height and package complexity should keep TSV demand tied closely to AI computing. Memory makers and OSATs that improve yields and secure customer commitments are positioned to capture value.

The principal risks are concentration among a small group of AI buyers, plant timing and the cost of new bonding and thermal processes. Mature image-sensor and MEMS applications provide a more stable but slower-growing base.

Competitive Landscape

SK hynix, Samsung Electronics and Micron are leading HBM stacking manufacturers. TSMC provides silicon-interposer integration, while ASE Technology Holding and Amkor Technology perform advanced assembly and test. Intel and JCET participate in adjacent packaging approaches, but the current report does not establish their specific TSV revenue; they are therefore not treated as direct TSV market-share leaders. Commercial competition centers on stacking yield, capacity, thermal performance and customer qualification rather than published stand-alone TSV revenue.

Key Players

- SK hynix

- Samsung Electronics

- Micron Technology

- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.

- ASE Technology Holding

- Amkor Technology

Recent Developments

June 16, 2026: TSMC and Amkor announced a 10-year agreement for advanced packaging and testing services in Arizona. The arrangement establishes a framework for U.S. capacity and does not disclose financial terms.

Feb. 12, 2026: Samsung Electronics announced that it had begun mass production and commercial shipments of HBM4, reflecting the technical importance of multilayer memory stacks.

Youth Social Media Protection Act Signed Into Law
Image File
Original HTML

Advocacy

We are excited to announce that Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the Youth Social Media Protection Act (AB 2481) into California law, a critical piece of legislation sponsored by the Organization for Social Media Safety. Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal authored this bill, which provides an important new tool to protect children from dangerous content on social media.

What Does the Youth Social Media Protect Act Do?

Starting January 1, 2026, AB 2481 will require large social media platforms to establish a verified reporting system. This system will allow school principals, most school counselors, and licensed mental health professionals to report (voluntarily) content that poses a severe risk to a child, such as: cyberbullying, suicide-related content, drug trafficking, violence, and sexual predation, among other threats. Platforms will then be required to respond to these reports within 72 or 24 hours, depending upon the severity of the risk. Such reports will also require a human review by the social media platform.

Why The Youth Social Media Protection Act Matters

Current research shows unequivocally that social media harms millions of California’s children yearly, many seriously. Such harms include cyberbullying, suicide, eating disorders, drug trafficking, sexual predation and exploitation, and violence, among many others. Despite the severity of these social media-related harms, social media platforms continue to provide an insufficient response to threats facing their users.

According to a survey by the ADL:

- 41% of respondents who experienced a physical threat stated that the platform took no action on a threatening post, an increase from the 38% who had reported a similar lack of action the year before.

- Only 14% of those who experienced a physical threat said the platform deleted the threatening content, a significant drop from 22% the prior year.

- Just 17% of those who experienced a physical threat stated that the platform blocked the perpetrator who posted the content, a sharp decrease from the prior year’s 28%.

Seriously dangerous content, tragically, either indefinitely remains on platforms even after reports from at-risk, targeted youth, or the response from reports comes far too late after significant harm has been done.

California’s educational leaders and licensed mental health professionals regularly bear direct witness to severe harm being inflicted upon youth due to social media content while having no means to address such content and protect the children in their care. By creating a verified reporter process, California can enable its trusted professionals, with their expert, experienced judgment, to alert social media platforms to impending, severe risks facing children.

What’s Next?

While the law will officially come into effect on January 1, 2026, we encourage schools and mental health professionals to begin preparing now. Here’s what you can do:

Stay informed: Learn about the new reporting systems that platforms will be required to implement under AB 2481.

Educate your teams: Make sure your staff is prepared to use this system to protect students when necessary.

Reach out to us: The Organization for Social Media Safety is here to provide support, resources, and guidance as this law is implemented.

This legislation is a real step forward in keeping our children safe from the increasing dangers of social media.

For More Information

We are here to help! If you have any questions or would like additional information on how the Youth Social Media Protection Act will be implemented, feel free to contact the Organization for Social Media Safety. Please let us know if you live outside of California and would like to bring this law to your state. Together, we can protect our families from the harms of social media.

Sherwin-Williams Releases Industrial Wood Colormix® 2027 Forecast

Connected by Design: Colormix® 2027 Explores the Future of Meaningful Spaces Through Wood Finish Design

CLEVELAND, Oct. 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood announces the release of Industrial Wood Colormix® 2027, a forward-looking forecast that explores how evolving cultural values are influencing the next generation of wood color and finish design. Developed by the Industrial Wood DesignHouse, the forecast identifies emerging color, stain and finish directions through three curated collections: Revive, Reignite and Reconnect.

Experience the full interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/sherwin-williams/9425751-en-sherwin-williams-releases-industrial-wood-colormix-2027-forecast

Colormix 2027 reflects a growing desire for spaces that feel meaningful, expressive and emotionally connected. As consumers increasingly seek authentic materials and deeper connections to the environments around them, wood remains one of the most influential design materials, offering warmth, versatility and lasting appeal.

"Today's most resonant designs are so much more than form and function. They create a personal, emotional sanctuary," says Maggie O'Hare, Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Sr. Marketing Manager, Color & Design. "The collections we've created for 2027 reflect our innate desire to reconnect though craftsmanship, true creative expression and environments that support our overall wellbeing."

The trends represented in Colormix 2027 are informed by ongoing research conducted by the Sherwin-Williams DesignHouse in Greensboro, North Carolina. The team studies cultural shifts, consumer behaviors, architectural trends and material influences to identify design directions that will shape the wood finishing industry for years to come. The forecast translates broader lifestyle trends into actionable finish solutions for manufacturers, designers, architects and specifiers.

The forecast is organized into three distinct collections:

Revive: The Past Reimagined

Inspired by the richness of heritage and craftsmanship, Revive celebrates enduring beauty through warm wood tones, refined finishes and layered character. Rich midtone woods, walnut-inspired hues and timeworn surfaces create designs that feel authentic, sophisticated and built to last.

Reignite: The Present in Motion

Reignite reflects a contemporary spirit defined by creativity, confidence and optimism. Pale organic stains, chalked wood tones, soft pastels and bold contrasts create modern spaces that feel expressive, imaginative and unmistakably current.

The Meta Settlement: What It Changes for Your Kids and What It Doesn’t
Image File
Original HTML

From the Director

This morning, a bipartisan coalition of 51 attorneys general announced a landmark settlement requiring Meta to pay at least $12.1 billion — and up to $17.1 billion — and to make court-enforceable changes to Instagram and Facebook to protect teens. It is the largest consumer protection settlement in history outside Big Tobacco. You can read the attorneys general’s announcement and the full 130-page settlement agreement.

Attorneys General Rob Bonta, Jennifer Davenport, Phil Weiser, and Russell Coleman took Meta to trial, and in the second week of testimony, Meta agreed to change. Behind them stood attorneys general from across the political map, Democrats like Illinois’ Kwame Raoul and Republicans like Kentucky’s Coleman and Indiana’s Todd Rokita, united on a truth every parent knows: protecting children on social media is not a partisan issue. Every family in America owes them gratitude.

At the Organization for Social Media Safety, we spent today reading the full settlement agreement so you don’t have to. Our assessment is simple: this settlement makes children safer. But it does not make them safe. Not because the attorneys general fell short; they extracted more from a social media platform than anyone ever has, and what they accomplished is meaningful. But children remain at risk because of the limitations of what any single settlement with a single company can reach, and because of the nature of social media itself. Here is what will change, and what requires continued work:

A midnight-to-6 a.m. lockout

Teen accounts will be blocked overnight by default, and only a parent can lift it. This is a good start, and we credit the attorneys general for recognizing the impact of social media on a teen’s sleep. But midnight is still late for a developing brain; messaging stays open all night, and nothing stops a teen from opening another platform like TikTok or Snapchat at 12:01 am.

A two-hour daily limit across Meta’s apps

A meaningful first: a hard default cap. But teens average nearly five hours a day on social media across all platforms, and research links three or more hours daily to roughly double the risk of adverse mental health outcomes. Time spent messaging and watching longer videos doesn’t count toward the cap, and hours on other platforms do not either.

No notifications during school hours

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on school days, push notifications go quiet by default — though message notifications continue. A smart change, and one whose real-world impact we’ll be watching closely.

Hidden like counts and a ban on cosmetic-procedure filters

These design features were built to fuel social comparison in teens, especially girls. But the ban reaches only filters that mimic cosmetic procedures — many other dangerous, appearance-distorting filters remain, and new ones evolve constantly. A real step, not a complete one, which is why independent testing, not just Meta’s own, must verify what’s actually reaching children.

A non-addictive feed — as an option

Teens can choose a chronological feed of only accounts they follow, and Meta must offer it regularly. But this change reaches the teens least at risk, the ones motivated to seek it out. The teens who most need a non-addictive feed are the ones the addictive feed has already captured. That’s why we co-sponsored AB 1709 in California to make this protection mandatory for every child under 16, on every platform.

New parental alerts

Parents and caregivers will be alerted when a teen first messages an adult, and when a teen repeatedly searches terms related to suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders. These matter. But read the fine print: they go only to families enrolled in Meta’s own parental supervision program, cover only Meta’s apps, and reach only searches: not posts, not messages, not what a child views. Comprehensive, life-saving parental alerts exist today through independent third-party safety software. That’s what Sammy’s Law (H.R. 2657) would guarantee families on every major platform, and why Congress must pass it this year. When a child in a life-threatening crisis shows warning signs, a parent should know every time.

Age assurance

Every protection above depends on knowing who’s actually a teen. The settlement sets real accuracy targets for age detection: genuine progress. Making age assurance work industry-wide, and keeping it working, is exactly why AB 1709 in California creates the e-Safety Advisory Commission to get it right.

What changes on your child’s phone tonight? Nothing yet.

The settlement awaits court approval and after that, most changes take six months to arrive, with age assurance taking up to a year. Which brings us to the point: these changes will help. They will not make children safe on social media. That work remains where it has always been: in the legislatures, the courts, and at home and in school.

For any intervention, the only measure that ultimately matters is whether harm to children actually declines, and measuring that precisely is the work of our research partnership with the UCLA School of Education.

What you can do this week

If your school doesn’t yet have a social media safety program, this is the week to start. Parents: share this page with your principal. School and district leaders: see how the Organization for Social Media Safety works with hundreds of schools nationwide.

Safer, not safe. We keep going.

Marc Berkman serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Organization for Social Media Safety. An attorney and former policy leader at the National Center for Youth Law, he co-sponsored California’s AB 1709 and has testified before the Legislature on social media safety.

This analysis will be updated as the settlement moves through court approval and implementation. Last updated: August 26, 2026.

Colossal to Repatriate Rare Moa Egg to Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Image File
Original HTML

According to auction records, the egg was discovered in New Zealand on January 14, 1966, and remained in a private American collection for approximately six decades before Colossal purchased it from Artemis Gallery in Louisville, Colorado, on June 12, 2026 when it resurfaced in the public auction. Auction records indicate that the egg may have originated from a human burial site dating to the Moa Hunter period, around AD 1300, although further research will be required to confirm its provenance.

Fewer than 40 sufficiently complete moa eggs are known in public collections worldwide, and only eight retain at least 90 percent of their original shell. Measuring approximately 22 by 17 centimeters, the newly documented egg has been reconstructed from numerous fragments, with additional pieces still to be reattached. Expert conservation and non-destructive analysis could help establish its species, geographic origin and place among the best-preserved known moa eggs once returned to New Zealand. Colossal has made plans to return the egg physically back to New Zealand via private transport to ensure the highest level of safety for the precious artifact and will hold a repatriation ceremony in December.

A Taonga Returns to its Rightful Home

Moa were flightless birds that lived only in New Zealand. Nine species of moa were native on the islands when the first polynesians settled on the islands between 1250 and 1300 CE. The nine moa species ranged from turkey-sized to the South Island giant moa (Dinornis robustus), which stood up to 3.6 meters tall with its neck outstretched and weighed approximately 230 kilograms. Moa went extinct roughly 600 years ago, within two centuries of Polynesian settlement. For Ngāi Tahu, whose earliest ancestors lived alongside moa in Te Waipounamu, the South Island, the birds are recorded in archaeology and in oral tradition, and their remains are taonga: treasured objects that carry the history of the land and its people.

While thousands of moa bones have been recovered from swamps, caves, and dune sites across New Zealand, whole eggs are scarce. Moa eggshell is thin, in most cases under two millimeters, and rarely survives intact. Te Papa, New Zealand's national museum, describes its own moa egg as one of only 36 mostly intact moa eggs in the world, expanding a 2005 survey by ornithologist Brian Gill that counted 33 moa eggs complete enough to be measured. According to Gill's survey, all known moa eggs are in public collections: four at the Natural History Museum in London and the remainder in eight New Zealand museums and research collections.

The giant moa egg, which is not one of those counted above, measures approximately 22 by 17 centimeters, which is about 1.5 times longer than and nearly double the volume of an ostrich egg. The giant moa egg has been reconstructed from many fragments, with further fragments still to be reattached under the approval and guidance of Ngāi Tahu researchers.

"When we launched the moa program we made a clear commitment that indigenous leadership would guide the science and every decision surrounding the project. Securing and transporting this egg back to its rightful home is just part of that commitment. Regardless of when and how it left the country, we strongly feel all recognizable moa bones and remains as well as any other New Zealand artifacts should be returned to the country and its people. To quote Indiana Jones, "it belongs in a museum," a museum in Aotearoa, under the care of the people whose ancestors lived alongside these extraordinary birds. We are honored to help return it home," said Ben Lamm, CEO and Co-Founder of Colossal.

Under New Zealand's Protected Objects Act 1975, intact moa remains are protected objects that cannot be exported without permission from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. This egg left the country before that law was in force. After discovering the egg listed for auction, Colossal immediately acted to procure it so as to ensure it's safe return home to be cared for under the direction of the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre.

"Every New Zealander grows up knowing the moa and feeling its loss," said Sir Peter Jackson. "Whenever I've been walking deep in the New Zealand bush, I can't help but keep looking into the thick forest, hoping for a glimpse of the mythic "last Moa" - an amazing bird that sadly no longer exists, no matter how hard you look … and hope. When we learned that this exceptionally rare Moa egg was being sold outside of New Zealand, we spoke to Colossal, who not only offered to rescue it at their own considerable expense - but to also fly it privately to New Zealand, so it returns home safely. After expert restoration, it will very likely become only the ninth known nearly intact moa egg—probably one of the five best-preserved examples. More importantly, working with Colossal, and under Ngāi Tahu's guidance, we can return this culturally significant taonga to its rightful custodians, advance research into the Moa, and connect future generations with Aotearoa's extraordinary cultural and natural history. I'm delighted this treasure will now be in the care of Ngāi Tahu."

The Egg, the Science and the Partnership

Established in 2025 as a joint initiative between Colossal, the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre, Sir Peter Jackson and the Canterbury Museum, research partners direct and guide the development of the moa de-extinction program. The partnership aims to bring together Colossal's genomic and reproductive technologies with the mātauranga of Ngāi Tahu research leaders, and other experts within New Zealand.

Since the program was announced, the teams have made significant progress. Scientists have joined Ngāi Tahu archaeologist Kyle Davis at cave and subfossil sites across Te Waipounamu to observe and collect samples that will be needed to sequence the genomes of multiple moa species. In May 2026, Colossal also hatched healthy chicks using a shell-less artificial incubation system designed to eventually support eggs approaching the size of a moa's.

"In fieldwork and research undertaken across Te Waipounamu, we've often worked with fragments of bone and eggshell that help us reconstruct the story of moa and the people who lived alongside them," said Kyle Davis a Ngāi Tahu archaeologist and expert in cultural heritage. "To see an egg of this rarity return to Te Waipounamu is extraordinary. It carries information about the moa species that birthed it, the landscape it came from and potentially the people connected to it. Most importantly, it will now be cared for and further researched in collaboration with Ngāi Tahu researchers, where decisions about its future can be guided by tikanga and grounded in the place to which it belongs."

Moa eggshell has long been an important source of information for scientists. Published research has recovered ancient DNA from moa eggshell fragments, for example, an eggshell structure and thickness has helped researchers understand how moa nested and incubated their eggs. Future scientific study in New Zealand of the returned egg could include non-destructive imaging or sampling for DNA and/or isotopes to confirm the species and geographic origin of the egg. Whether and when to take on this work will be decided by the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre in accordance with tikanga.

"Fewer than forty whole moa eggs are known, and each one holds information we can get nowhere else – sometimes even their DNA. An egg like this belongs in Aotearoa, in the hands of the people and institutions who study and care for moa, and not in a private collection. That is how we work across the whole moa program: in partnership with the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre and Canterbury Museum, ensuring that every result we generate is returned to New Zealand," said Beth Shapiro, PhD, Colossal's Chief Science Officer.

Presentation at SAPE 2026 in Ōtautahi Christchurch

The repatriation announcement will be on Monday, October 19, 2026, the opening day of the 11th International Meeting of the Society of Avian Palaeontology and Evolution, which runs from October 19 to 23 at the Christchurch Town Hall in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The day opens with a pōwhiri, a formal Māori welcome. The meeting's organizing committee includes Dr. Paul Scofield, Senior Curator Natural History at Canterbury Museum and a collaborating scientist on the moa program, together with colleagues from the University of Canterbury and Flinders University.

"It is especially fitting to announce the return of this remarkable egg at our conference with the world's leading experts on ancient birds gathered here in Ōtautahi Christchurch," said Dr. Paul Scofield, Senior Curator of Natural History at Canterbury Museum and collaborating scientist on the moa program. "Moa are central to the natural and cultural history of Aotearoa, and this egg has far greater scientific and cultural value here than it could ever have in a private collection overseas. Its homecoming will create new opportunities for research while ensuring that this extraordinary taonga is cared for in the land—and by the people—to which it belongs."

Colossal's commitment to New Zealand extends beyond the moa. Through its partnership with the Ngāi Tahu researchers and other New Zealand-based experts, the company has committed to open-sourcing the technologies it develops for conservation under guidance of partners, with aims which include biobanking taonga species across the Ngāi Tahu takiwā, to educational programs for Ngāi Tahu rangatahi and kiwi youth, and to building conservation biotechnology capability within Te Waipounamu towards the future establishment of Colossal Laboratories in New Zealand.

ABOUT COLOSSAL

Colossal was founded by emerging technology and software entrepreneur Ben Lamm and world-renowned geneticist and serial biotech entrepreneur George Church, Ph.D., and is the first to apply CRISPR technology for the purposes of species de-extinction.
