The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center cared for 10 critically injured Pentagon patients and helped shape the future of burn care.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty-five years later, three survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, Pentagon attack returned to the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where they received lifesaving care and began their long road to recovery after one of the nation's deadliest terrorist attacks.

The survivors reunited with caregivers and toured the Burn Center, including the newly renovated intensive care unit, step-down unit, and rehabilitation gym where they spent weeks and months recovering from devastating injuries. Their visit underscored the resilience of survivors, the dedication of healthcare teams who cared for them, and the lasting bonds formed through tragedy.

The three survivors spent between five weeks and three months at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after sustaining severe burn injuries in the attack.

- HON Brian Birdwell, now Assistant Secretary of War for Sustainment at the Pentagon and a retired Army lieutenant colonel, suffered severe burns over more than 60% of his body. He underwent dozens of surgeries and months of rehabilitation during his recovery. Since then, HON Birdwell has dedicated his life to public service and has become a nationally recognized advocate and speaker on resilience and leadership.

- Maj. David King worked in the Pentagon's Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army (G-8) and was the sole survivor from his office. He sustained burns to 22% of his body and endured multiple surgeries, skin grafts, and extensive physical therapy. After approximately five weeks in the hospital, he returned to military service in January 2002 and retired from the Army in 2008.

- John Yates, a security manager at the Pentagon, sustained burns to 38% of his body and was the sole survivor from his office. He spent over two months in the hospital, where he relearned many of the basic tasks of everyday life during his recovery. He returned to work in Jan. 2002 and retired in 2016.

The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center played a critical role in the region's emergency response following the attack on the Pentagon. As the Washington region's only adult Burn Center, its physicians, nurses, therapists, and support staff rapidly mobilized to care for 10 patients suffering from severe burns, inhalation injuries, and complex trauma. Many required multiple reconstructive surgeries, specialized wound care, respiratory support, rehabilitation services, and long-term follow-up.

The national spotlight turned to the hospital on Sept. 13, 2001, when President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush visited patients, families, and healthcare workers, thanking them for their courage and service during one of the most challenging moments in the nation's history.

"The lessons learned from caring for survivors of the Pentagon attack helped shape burn disaster preparedness, emergency response planning, and multidisciplinary burn care in the years that followed," said Jeffrey Shupp, MD, director of the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. "Since 2001, advances in critical care, wound management, infection prevention, skin grafting techniques, reconstructive surgery, pain management, rehabilitation, and aftercare have dramatically improved outcomes for patients with severe burn injuries."

Dr. Shupp was a graduate student at the University of Maryland on Sept. 11, 2001. In the years that followed, he spent hundreds of hours learning from the late Marion Jordan, MD, former director of the Burn Center, whose leadership during and after the Pentagon attack earned the Burn and Trauma teams worldwide recognition for their expertise in caring for some of the nation's most critically injured survivors.

Today, the Burn Center continues to serve as a regional, national, and international leader in burn care, providing comprehensive treatment from emergency care through rehabilitation, reconstruction, and social reintegration. The program cares for patients with some of the most complex traumatic injuries, helping them recover, regain independence, and return to their families, jobs, and communities.

The return of these three survivors stands as a testament to the lifesaving care delivered in the aftermath of Sept. 11 and the remarkable advances in burn medicine made over the past 25 years.

In the news release, Fewer Blood Components Transfused with fibryga® Than Cryoprecipitate, Secondary Analysis of Prespecified FIBRES Subgroups Reports, issued 09-Sep-2026 by Octapharma over PR Newswire, we are advised by the company that the fifth paragraph, second sentence, should read "16% relative reduction" rather than "19% relative reduction" as originally issued inadvertently. The complete, corrected release follows:

Fewer Blood Components Transfused with fibryga® Than Cryoprecipitate, Secondary Analysis of Prespecified FIBRES Subgroups Reports

Findings published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia

Secondary findings do not change the primary outcomes of the FIBRES trial

PARAMUS, N.J. and TORONTO, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A prespecified secondary analysis of the landmark FIBRES trial demonstrated that fibryga® (fibrinogen [human]) significantly reduced 24-hour allogeneic blood-product (ABP) transfusion requirements versus cryoprecipitate in two predefined, overlapping subgroups: patients in a non-critical state before surgery and patients undergoing elective surgery.1

These findings have been published as a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, titled Superiority of Fibrinogen Concentrate Versus Cryoprecipitate for Treatment of Bleeding in Cardiac Surgery Patients: A Secondary Analysis of the FIBRES Randomized Clinical Trial Stratified by Surgical Risk.

The newly published analysis evaluated two subgroups that had been defined before the trial results were analyzed. Results from this analysis do not change the primary conclusion of the primary FIBRES trial. In the overall study population, fibryga® met the trial's prespecified criterion for non-inferiority to cryoprecipitate.2,3

"These findings provide additional evidence and guidance around fibrinogen replacement in cardiac surgery patients who develop clinically significant bleeding and acquired hypofibrinogenemia," said Justyna Bartoszko, M.D., lead author of the analysis and a member of the FIBRES Research Group. "Blood transfusions can be lifesaving, but an efficient patient blood management strategy seeks to avoid unnecessary exposure to allogeneic blood components, as they are known to increase the risk of postoperative complications."4

Findings from the secondary subgroup analysis

The first subgroup consisted of participants from the FIBRES trial who were determined to be in a non-critical state before surgery (n=634), representing 86% of the primary analysis population. In this subgroup, there was a 16% relative reduction in ABP units transfused within 24 hours in patients receiving fibryga® versus cryoprecipitate (13.6 units vs. 16.2 units).

The second subgroup consisted of FIBRES trial participants undergoing elective surgery (n=466), representing 63% of the primary analysis population. In this subgroup, there was a 19% relative reduction in ABP units transfused within 24 hours in patients receiving fibryga® versus cryoprecipitate (11.7 units vs. 14.4 units).

"When clinically appropriate for a patient with acquired fibrinogen deficiency, a standardized fibrinogen concentrate provides targeted replacement," said Huub Kreuwel, Ph.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs, Octapharma USA.5 "While the primary results from FIBRES have not changed, secondary analyses such as these provide relevant information about specific patient subgroups which may be useful for informing institutional patient blood management protocols."

Safety findings

In the full study population, 248 (66.7%) patients in the fibryga® group and 264 (72.7%) patients in the cryoprecipitate group experienced treatment-emergent adverse events during the study (relative risk, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.83-1.01; P=0.07).

Within the elective-surgery subgroup, adverse events were less frequent among patients assigned to fibryga® than among patients assigned to cryoprecipitate (relative risk, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.75-0.97; P=0.02). Serious adverse events were also less frequent among fibryga® recipients in the elective surgery subgroup (relative risk, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.52-0.99; P=0.04).

No treatment-emergent AEs, SAEs, or deaths in the study were deemed to be possibly or probably related to FC or cryoprecipitate.

These findings should not be interpreted as establishing an overall safety advantage, and the safety of fibryga® should be evaluated in accordance with its current U.S. prescribing information.

About the FIBRES trial

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of fibryga® for fibrinogen replacement in patients with acquired fibrinogen deficiency (AFD) was supported by the landmark FIBRES study published in JAMA. The study demonstrated that fibrinogen concentrate is non-inferior to cryoprecipitate in managing bleeding following cardiac surgery, with the added benefits of standardized dosing, faster preparation, and reduced risk of viral transmission.

FIBRES was an investigator-initiated, pragmatic, multicenter, randomized clinical trial conducted at 11 Canadian hospitals (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT03037424). The study enrolled adults undergoing cardiac surgery who developed clinically significant bleeding and acquired hypofibrinogenemia after cardiopulmonary bypass for whom fibrinogen replacement was ordered. The FIBRES trial was supported by an unrestricted grant from Octapharma, which also provided the fibrinogen concentrate used in the study. Funding was also provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Cryoprecipitate was provided by Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec. Full author disclosures are reported in the published article.

A total of 827 patients were randomized. Of these, 735 patients received study treatment and were included in the primary analysis: 372 received fibryga® and 363 received cryoprecipitate. Each ordered dose consisted of 4 grams of fibryga® or 10 units of cryoprecipitate during the first 24 hours after cardiopulmonary bypass.

The primary endpoint was the cumulative number of allogeneic blood-component units – red blood cells, platelets and plasma – administered during the first 24 hours after bypass. In the overall population, the mean number of blood-component units administered was 16.3 with fibryga® and 17.0 with cryoprecipitate. The ratio of the means was 0.96, with a two-sided 95% confidence interval of 0.84 to 1.09. The trial met its prespecified non-inferiority criterion, with P0.001 for non-inferiority. The test for superiority in the overall population was not statistically significant, with P=0.50.

About fibryga®

fibryga® is a human fibrinogen concentrate indicated for: fibrinogen supplementation in bleeding patients with acquired fibrinogen deficiency; and treatment of acute bleeding episodes in patients with congenital fibrinogen deficiency, including afibrinogenemia and hypofibrinogenemia.

fibryga® is not indicated for dysfibrinogenemia.

Contraindications

Anaphylactic or severe reactions to fibryga® or its components (Sodium Citrate Dihydrate; Glycine; L-Arginine Hydrochloride).

Warnings and Precautions

Monitor patients for early signs of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions. If necessary, discontinue administration and institute appropriate treatment.

Thrombotic events have been reported in patients receiving fibryga®. Treatment with human fibrinogen concentrate in congenital fibrinogen deficiency has been associated with thrombosis at target plasma fibrinogen levels that were below 150 mg/dL. The thrombotic risks may be greater when the target fibrinogen plasma level is 150 mg/dL. Weigh the benefits of administration versus the risks of thrombosis.

fibryga® is made from pooled human plasma. Products made from human plasma may contain infectious agents, e.g., viruses and, theoretically, the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) agent.

Adverse Reactions

The most serious adverse reactions that may be observed with fibryga® are thromboembolic episodes and anaphylactic-type reactions. The most common adverse reactions observed in clinical studies with fibryga® in acquired fibrinogen deficiency (>5% of patients) were abnormal hepatic function, acute kidney injury, anemia, atrial fibrillation, delirium and renal failure.

The most common adverse reactions observed in clinical studies with fibryga® in congenital fibrinogen deficiency (>5% of patients) were nausea, vomiting, pyrexia (fever), and thrombocytosis.

TSA marks 25th anniversary of September 11 terrorist attacks

Agency reflects on quarter-century, future of protecting nation's transportation systems

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost and reaffirming the agency's commitment to protecting the nation's transportation systems and staying ahead of evolving threats.

In response to the 9/11 attacks, TSA was created when President George W. Bush signed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act into law on November 19, 2001, to strengthen transportation security and restore confidence in the aviation system. The agency's mission remains unchanged: to protect the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce.

"For 25 years, the men and women of TSA have carried out this mission with vigilance, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to the American people," TSA Administrator David P. Cummins said. "As we remember those we lost on September 11 and honor the service that followed, we also look ahead. The threats we face today are sophisticated and constantly evolving. TSA must modernize to defend against those threats. Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, we've launched the Horizon 25 Strategy to advance our capabilities across all modes of transportation to ensure 9/11 never happens again. Not on our watch."

Over the past 25 years, TSA has evolved from a newly formed federal screening workforce into a sophisticated, intelligence-driven, risk-based security agency. Today, aviation security begins well before a passenger reaches the checkpoint and includes intelligence analysis and information sharing, passenger vetting, advanced screening technology, canine teams, Federal Air Marshals, inspectors and close coordination with airports, airlines, law enforcement and international partners.

Technology has transformed the checkpoint through TSA's deployment of computed tomography, advanced imaging technology, credential authentication technology and facial comparison technology. TSA PreCheck® and other risk-based security initiatives help the agency focus resources where they provide the greatest security value while improving the passenger experience.

Beyond our airports, TSA is responsible for securing other modes of transportation, including ports, railways, and pipelines, as well as major events like America's 250th anniversary celebrations and the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

TSA's approximately 60,000 employees remain at the center of the agency's mission. Transportation security officers and other TSA professionals operate increasingly sophisticated technologies, help identify and respond to potential threats, and adapt as the threat environment changes.

Looking ahead, TSA will continue upgrading screening technology, strengthening identity management, expanding risk-based security and improving the passenger experience. The agency will also continue adapting to emerging threats, including cyber risks and unmanned aircraft systems, while strengthening partnerships across government and industry.

Twenty-five years after September 11, TSA's mission endures: to stay ahead of evolving threats, keep transportation moving, and protect the freedom of movement for people and commerce that is fundamental to the American way of life. In honor of that legacy, TSA has launched a 25th anniversary commemorative website. We invite the public to visit TSA.gov for more information on our enduring mission.

Original HTML

– Revenue increased 53% to $30.8 million – Operating income increased 59% to $7.4 million

– Net income increased 43% to $5.3 million – Earnings per share increased to $0.08 from $0.06

NEW CENTURY, Kan., Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Butler National Corporation (OTCQX: BUKS), a leader in the growing global market for aircraft modification, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and a recognized provider of gaming management services, announces its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027. The Company will host a conference call on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 10:00 AM Central Time to review these results.

Management Comments

Adam Sefchick, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Butler National Corporation, commented on the results stating, "Butler National delivered record first-quarter earnings in fiscal 2027. These results reflect the dedication of our employees, the continued execution of our strategic initiatives, and our focus on operational efficiency across the organization. Revenue increased 53% to $30.8 million, operating income increased 59% to $7.4 million, and net income increased 43% to $5.3 million compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2026.

Importantly, our significant revenue growth translated into continued strong profitability, with operating margin increasing to 24% compared to 23% in the prior-year quarter. Earnings per share increased to $0.08 from $0.06, reflecting improved operating performance during the quarter. We also continued our disciplined approach to capital allocation, including ongoing share repurchases and investments in our businesses.

Within our Aerospace Products segment, strong performance from both Avcon Aircraft Modifications and Butler National-Tempe contributed significantly to our results, while Aerospace Products backlog reached a record $51.1 million. At Avcon, we achieved several significant milestones, including the successful completion and delivery of two Challenger 605/650 modification projects that included our recently approved STC for the under-fuselage radome/pod and rails for mounting of sensors. In addition, Avcon completed a complex special mission systems integration project, delivering a CASA CN-235 aircraft upgraded with a new sensor package that included a new Avcon-designed custom workstation. The project demonstrates Avcon's expanding capabilities beyond structural aircraft modification to provide more comprehensive special mission systems integration solutions, while creating opportunities for derivative products and potential follow-on installations. Special Mission Electronics (Tempe) continued to experience strong customer demand and increasing production volumes.

The increased sales of Avcon aircraft modification kits for customer installation also contributed to revenue and margin performance during the quarter. These included Cessna Caravan camera port modification kits, as well as Avcon rails and Special Mission Pod kits for the King Air. Kit sales remain an important part of our strategy to leverage Avcon's engineering and certification capabilities while expanding our geographic reach.

These results reflect the continued execution of strategic initiatives implemented over the last several years, including investments in new product development, manufacturing capabilities, and operational efficiency. We remain focused on customer satisfaction, operational excellence, and disciplined growth."

Jeffrey Yowell, Executive Chairman, commented: "Butler National's strong first-quarter results demonstrate the continued momentum across our businesses and the effectiveness of the strategy we have been executing. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank our employees for their continued dedication to serving our customers and executing at a high level every day.

As Butler National enters its next chapter of leadership and growth, the Board and management team remain focused on maintaining stability and continuing to execute the Company's strategic and operational priorities. While the Board conducts its search for a permanent Chief Executive Officer, we remain confident in Adam and our experienced leadership team and their ability to continue advancing the business.

Our objective remains to build upon the momentum already established across Butler National by investing in our capabilities, improving operational execution and pursuing disciplined opportunities for long-term growth and shareholder value creation."

Stockholders' equity increased 5% during the first quarter of fiscal 2027 while long-term liabilities declined 3%. During the first quarter of fiscal 2027, we repurchased 246,996 shares of our outstanding common stock for cash under our share repurchase program and as part of our ongoing capital allocation strategy.

Business Segment Highlights

Aerospace Products:

Revenue from the Aerospace Products segment increased 92% to $21.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 compared to $11.3 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2026. The increase in revenue was primarily driven by a $10.7 million increase in aircraft modification activity and a $0.7 million increase in the sales of Special Mission Electronics, partially offset by a $0.9 million decrease in Aircraft Avionics. Aircraft Modifications experienced higher activity across multiple programs, including increased work on larger and more complex special mission aircraft projects, as well as repeat modifications utilizing previously developed STCs.

Revenue also benefited from increased sales of modification kits for field installation, including Cessna Caravan camera port modification kits and Avcon rails and Special Mission Pod kits for the King Air, among others. Additionally, Avcon completed and delivered two Special Mission Challenger 605/650 modification projects that included our recently approved STC for the under-fuselage radome/pod and rails for mounting of sensors.

Aerospace Products operating income increased 91% compared to the prior-year quarter, while the segment maintained an operating margin of approximately 25% despite the significant increase in revenue and activity.

Butler National-Tempe continued to experience strong demand for its specialized electronic control systems and defense-related products, including deliveries of M134 minigun gun control units. Sepsis Diagnostics Market - Investment & funding +Merger & Acquisition

Investment Funding Context

Investment activity in sepsis diagnostics is enabling earlier recognition of sepsis, faster pathogen identification, and rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). Recent financing reflects strong backing for diagnostic developers approaching or expanding commercialization. Cytovale raised USD 84 million in Series C financing in November 2023, led by Norwest Venture Partners, followed by USD 100 million in Series D financing in October 2024, led by Sands Capital, to expand adoption of IntelliSep in US hospitals. The Series C included the conversion of bridge notes. Inflammatix secured USD 57 million in Series E financing in September 2024, led by Khosla Ventures and Think.Health, to support regulatory work and early commercialization of its TriVerity acute infection and sepsis test.

Capital is also supporting treatment guidance and testing closer to patients. Selux Diagnostics announced in April 2024 that RA Capital Management led a USD 48 million funding round for US commercialization of its rapid AST platform, including testing of positive blood cultures. In October 2024, Ad Astra Diagnostics announced a USD 5 million BARDA contract, with potential total funding of up to USD 12.6 million, to develop a blood-count and severe-infection detection system. The latter amount is a potential contract ceiling; the award and Selux financing cover applications beyond sepsis alone.

Established suppliers also invest through internal development: bioMérieux reported EUR 507.4 million (USD 572.6 million) in group R&D expenses in 2025, though this is not a sepsis-specific investment figure. Commercial adoption remains a material constraint. Its EUR 141 million (USD 159.14 million) impairment of VITEK REVEAL technology in 2025 reflected slower market development and a more gradual commercial ramp-up. Analyst assessment: funding prospects depend on clinical utility, hospital implementation, sustained test utilization, and technical performance.

Original HTML

PLYMOUTH, Mich., Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Esperovax, Inc. today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a Notice of Allowance for U.S. Patent Application No. 18/038,673, entitled "Yeast-Based Expression of Therapeutic Proteins In Vivo."

The allowed patent application covers technology developed by Esperovax for using engineered yeast as a platform for the in vivo production of therapeutic proteins. The approach is designed to enable therapeutic proteins to be produced directly within the body following administration of engineered yeast, creating opportunities for localized, sustained, and potentially more accessible delivery of biologic medicines.

The allowance represents an important expansion of Esperovax's intellectual property portfolio and provides protection for a technology platform with potential applications across multiple therapeutic areas.

"This patent allowance validates an important part of the scientific foundation we have built at Esperovax," said David O'Hagan, Ph.D., CEO of Esperovax. "Rather than manufacturing every therapeutic protein externally and repeatedly administering the purified biologic, our technology creates the possibility of programming yeast to function as an in vivo therapeutic protein production system. We believe this approach could ultimately enable new ways of delivering biologic medicines."

The technology is particularly compelling for applications in which localized or sustained expression of therapeutic proteins could provide advantages over conventional systemic protein administration.

CRFB Report: Kroger Overcharging at 1 in 3 Ohio Stores Analyzed
Image File
Original HTML

Government inspection records and nearly 2,000 accounts from multiple states expose recurring pricing failures and lost customer trust

CINCINNATI, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Government inspectors found overcharging at more than one in three Kroger stores examined across nine Ohio jurisdictions (36 of 101), according to a report released this week by the Center for Responsible Food Business (CRFB). Pricing errors favored Kroger nearly three times as often as they favored shoppers.

The report, Kroger's Pricing Problem, pairs those inspection findings with nearly 2,000 accounts submitted through CRFB's Kroger Hurts Families campaign. Customers, employees, and suppliers describe pricing problems ranging from repeated overcharges to misleading sales and difficulty accessing advertised discounts.

The government records, obtained through public-records requests, cover 389 inspections from 2022 to mid-2026. Inspectors recorded 644 incorrect prices, and overcharges averaged more than 20 percent above shelf prices.

"People go to Kroger to feed their families, not to get ripped off at the register. Customers are telling us they have to photograph price tags, challenge their receipts, and fight for refunds," said Taylor Warren, president of CRFB. "When people need that kind of protection from their own grocery store, the company has failed them."

Key findings

- Repeated inspection failures: 58 of 389 inspections failed in the Ohio records. More than one in three stores examined was caught overcharging at least once.

- Recurring overcharges: 557 relevant submissions (29 percent) described overcharging. Shoppers also reported confusion over Kroger's price guarantees and repeated trips to customer service to recover their money.

- Misleading sales: 247 submissions (13 percent) described misleading signage, including fine-print purchase conditions and "sales" that shoppers said offered no real discount.

- Inaccessible discounts: 139 submissions (7 percent) described difficulty obtaining digital-only prices, including accounts concerning seniors, disabled shoppers, and people without smartphones.

- High prices and limited alternatives: 40 percent of relevant submissions described high, rising, or unaffordable prices; 8 percent alleged higher prices where shoppers lacked alternatives.

A year ago, Consumer Reports found Kroger was overcharging customers by an average of 18 percent across 26 stores; our new report shows the mega-retailer has not corrected the issue.

"I have been overcharged too many times to count, to the point where I just accept it," one shopper wrote.

"When an overcharge goes unnoticed, Kroger keeps money the customer was never supposed to pay," Warren said. "Those extra dollars matter to working families trying to afford food. Calling it a pricing error does not make it harmless."

About Kroger Hurts Families

CRFB has run more than $3 million in television advertisements across its Kroger Hurts Families campaign. Launched in May 2026, the campaign has used these ads to invite shoppers and employees to share their experiences at KrogerHurtsFamilies.com.

This report focuses on pricing; the broader campaign also addresses food quality, safety, labor issues, and consumer privacy concerns.

CRFB is calling on Kroger to honor its price tags, make discounts accessible, provide clear remedies for overcharges, and stop charging more in communities with few alternatives.
