Copenhagen – November 03, 2026 -- Cambiotics ApS has enrolled the first participant in its first human clinical trial, testing whether its probiotic strain 46-SL1 changes serum PFAS concentrations in 70 firefighters with prior occupational exposure.
Crossover trial runs 2 x 12 weeks in Chicago
The study is randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled. Atlantia Clinical Trials is conducting it in Chicago, Illinois (NCT07846371). Researchers are also assessing safety, tolerability and fecal microbiome changes. 46-SL1 is being developed as a dietary supplement.
Dr. Stacey Boetto of Atlantia Clinical Trials is the Principal Investigator.
Exposure extends beyond firefighters, with PFAS detected in over 99% of US samples
Firefighters encounter PFAS through sources including historical PFAS-containing firefighting foams and protective equipment. The CDC's national biomonitoring survey, NHANES, has detected at least one PFAS chemical in more than 99% of samples from the US population. Cambiotics says there is no efficient way to accelerate PFAS elimination from the body.
CEO and Co-founder Peter Holme Jensen said PFAS "persist in the body for years." He described the move from laboratory work into clinical investigation as the right use of the company's recent funding round.
EUR 4 million seed round funds the US study, with a supplement launch planned for early 2027
Cambiotics funds the trial itself as part of its clinical development programme. In February 2026 it closed a EUR 4 million Seed round led by Collaborative Fund, with participation from EIFO, the Danish Export and Investment Fund, and True. The company raised the money partly to support its clinical programme, including this first US trial. It plans to launch its first dietary supplement in early 2027.
The science traces to 2025 research in Nature Microbiology by Anna E. Lindell and Professor Kiran Patil at the University of Cambridge's MRC Toxicology Unit. The work identified human gut bacteria that bioaccumulate PFAS and provided preclinical evidence linking bacterial PFAS accumulation to increased faecal excretion. Cambiotics was founded in 2024 with support from Denmark's BioInnovation Institute as a spin-off from that research.
