Ericsson GitOps Cuts Swisscom Core Upgrade Time by 60%

Dusseldorf – November 03, 2026 -- Swisscom has reduced software upgrade time by 60% and network service deployment time by 97% after adopting Ericsson's new GitOps-based lifecycle and configuration management for cloud-native core networks.

Ericsson extends declarative management to all dual-mode 5G core functions

Ericsson now offers GitOps-compliant software packages and configuration management for all of its cloud-native dual-mode 5G core network functions (CNFs). A communications service provider (CSP) defines the target state of its mobile core, and the system implements the required changes automatically. Ericsson says this reduces manual, time-intensive processes and frees engineering teams for other work.

The new deployment model is to become available for applications and products across Ericsson's core network portfolio.

Git version control anchors the desired network state

The approach is the latest addition to Ericsson's Intelligent Core offering. It replaces procedure-based lifecycle and configuration management with declarative, automated workflows that support intents at resource level. Git provides version control. An automated reconciliation process continuously aligns the actual network state with the defined target state.

Ericsson says this lets operators apply AI-driven changes and updates for autonomous network use cases at scale, in an environment where manual management would struggle with the complexity.

Swisscom moves from monthly maintenance windows to daytime change management

Swisscom worked with Ericsson to integrate the capability into its network, where it complements existing automation. Beyond the 60% and 97% reductions, the operator has moved from monthly maintenance windows and manual overnight upgrades to automated software deployment and change management during normal working hours.

Swisscom is now examining further applications, including new AI-driven automation use cases such as configuring roaming partners.

Philipp Bichsel, Executive Vice President Mobile Network & Services at Swisscom, credited the approach with a key role in the company's shift from a traditional telco to a TechCo focused on automation, cloud-native operations and continuous software delivery.

Analyst links GitOps to 5G Standalone revenue strategies

Caroline Chappell, senior analyst and founder of CCSquared, said GitOps is critical for mobile operators building the cloud-native operating model that autonomous networks require. She tied it to strategies for new revenue streams through 5G Standalone and advised operators to ensure their core is supported by a GitOps-based lifecycle and configuration solution.

Integration with Ericsson Orchestrator, CI/CD pipeline and ISSU

Configuration and activation of software updates can run through existing capabilities such as Ericsson Orchestrator. The approach integrates into Ericsson's CI/CD pipeline, which also supports In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU). It also aligns with the architecture of the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform and allows integration with other Ericsson lifecycle and configuration management products, including support for multi-vendor solutions.

Monica Zethzon, head of Core Networks at Ericsson, said practical experience from the Swisscom collaboration helped mature the approach enough to make it available to all customers.
