Continentale Pushes Basisrente Top-Ups Ahead of 2027 Pension Reform

Munich – November 03, 2026 -- Continentale is urging its sales partners to promote special payments into the Basisrente, as 2026 tax-deductible contributions reach up to EUR 30,826 for single filers and EUR 61,652 for jointly assessed couples.

Continentale tells brokers to approach clients with unused tax headroom

Clients who have not exhausted their deductible limit can make a one-off top-up, the insurer says. The actual tax relief depends on each client's income and pension situation. Continentale also wants intermediaries to explain how the Basisrente and the new retirement savings account (Altersvorsorgedepot) will work together from 2027.

Contributions start at EUR 25 a month or EUR 3,000 as a lump sum

Thomas Pollmer, head of life product management at Continentale Versicherung, says the lifelong pension can be expanded flexibly each year depending on income. He describes the product as ideal for the self-employed and freelancers. Higher-earning employees and clients who want to cover recurring monthly costs in retirement are also targets.

Three variants carry the top FFF+ rating from Franke und Bornberg

The independent rating agency Franke und Bornberg gave all three variants its highest grade, FFF+ (outstanding):

  • BasisRente Invest: fully fund-linked, for return-oriented investors
  • BasisRente Classic Pro: a capital-efficient classic product for security-minded clients
  • BasisRente Invest Garant: fund-based return opportunities combined with guarantees

Demand has shifted toward fund-linked products without contribution guarantees, particularly among younger clients. Pollmer argues that guaranteed pension factors fixed at contract signing still give fund-based policies planning certainty, in contrast to a passive ETF savings plan.

Altersvorsorgedepot arrives January 1, 2027 under the AVRG

The Altersvorsorgereformgesetz (AVRG) opens new options from January 1, 2027. The Altersvorsorgedepot is a capital-market-oriented product supported by state allowances, while the Basisrente offers higher tax-deductible contributions. Pollmer says that, depending on income, tax rate, family situation and goals, either product or a combination of both may fit, which makes advice essential.

Continentale and its sister company EUROPA will offer tariffs for all Altersvorsorgedepot models. Because more groups will qualify for state support, the insurer expects new occasions for advisory conversations.
