FirstEnergy Names Don Rettig Foundation President as Giving Grows

Akron – November 03, 2026 -- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) has named Don Rettig Vice President and FirstEnergy Foundation President, putting him in charge of a charitable program that has distributed nearly $6.5 million across the company's operational area so far in 2026.

Rettig will lead the Foundation's philanthropic strategy and oversee its charitable investments. He will report to Wade Smith, President of FirstEnergy Utilities. Smith said Rettig understands community needs, builds relationships and is disciplined about where resources are focused.

Foundation narrows 2026 giving to four priorities and lifts hunger and shelter funding

Since 2001, the FirstEnergy Foundation has donated nearly $140 million to nonprofits across the company's operational area. In 2026 it narrowed its focus to housing stability, hunger relief, workforce development and STEM education.

The narrower focus has increased funding in several areas:

  • The Foundation invested $5 million in Hunger Action Month grants, double the 2025 level.
  • Funding for its Shelter, Safety and Stability initiative rose to $500,000, five times the 2025 investment.
Rettig arrives from Owens Corning after leading its foundation across 20 countries

Rettig was most recently director of community affairs and president of the Owens Corning Foundation. He led the company's global community affairs and philanthropic strategy, increased corporate contributions and helped expand the foundation's impact across 20 countries.

He joined Owens Corning in 2011 after 14 years at Metroparks Toledo, where he held several leadership roles, including executive director.

Rettig holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Public Administration from Bowling Green State University. He is a trustee of the Greater Toledo Community Foundation.
