WATERLOO – November 02, 2026 -- Applied Brain Research (ABR) has made its speech AI software development kit generally available on Zephyr RTOS for Alif Semiconductor's Ensemble family of edge AI processors. On the Ensemble E8, its Niagara ASR engine delivers 133 ms average latency from first audio to first token while drawing 15 mW of active power above baseline.
SDK bundles streaming recognition and synthesis that run without a cloud connection
The kit combines two engines. Niagara ASR provides full-vocabulary streaming speech recognition with low latency, transcribing speech continuously as it is spoken. Nith TTS provides low-latency streaming speech synthesis.
The SDK also offers native Zephyr RTOS support for battery-powered and air-gapped products, plus ongoing model updates and expansion.
State space models bring speech AI into microcontroller power budgets
Voice interfaces on small devices have typically depended on a cloud connection or a larger application processor. ABR says its state space model technology fits speech AI within the power and memory budgets of microcontroller-class silicon. The 15 mW figure targets devices where battery life is critical and voice must stay available at all times.
ABR CEO Kevin Conley said the company achieved real-time performance at very low power consumption on the Ensemble family, calling the Zephyr release a milestone for developers on microcontroller-class platforms.
Alif cites Zephyr demand and voice as a top customer request
Mark Rootz, Vice President of Marketing at Alif Semiconductor, said Zephyr is increasingly the platform of choice for Alif customers. He described voice as one of the most requested capabilities for battery-powered devices. In his words, the SDK gives Ensemble developers a production-ready path to on-device speech recognition and text-to-speech.
Live Niagara ASR demo set for electronica 2026 in Munich
Niagara ASR will run live on the Ensemble E8 in the Alif Semiconductor booth, C5.170, at electronica 2026, held November 10-13 at Messe München. Developers can register for an account and obtain a free evaluation license through ABR's developer portal.
