Rural Internet Showdown: Fiber-Fed Wireless vs. Starlink

Granby – November 02, 2026 -- Rural households in Colorado and Texas weighing Starlink against local options now have a competing pitch: ElektraFi says its fiber-fed fixed wireless service delivers typical latency of 10 to 20 milliseconds, plus stronger upload capacity and steadier performance in bad weather.

The rural broadband provider serves Steamboat Springs and Granby, Northeast Colorado, and the Denton suburbs in Texas. It laid out its case against Starlink and other low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite services as satellite internet is marketed to more rural homes.

Latency and upload speeds drive the comparison

ElektraFi says the 10-20 ms latency suits online gaming and other real-time uses. It adds that fixed wireless often offers greater upload capacity, which speeds up streaming and content creation. The company argues that download speed is only part of the picture, since video calls, live streaming and gaming all depend on fast two-way traffic.

Fiber-fed design avoids satellite handoffs

Because the network uses a fiber-fed connection, it does not rely on passing signals from satellite to satellite, which ElektraFi says means fewer interruptions. The company also says physical beamwidth limits prevent LEO systems from serving more than a handful of customers per square mile without significant slowdowns. According to ElektraFi, fixed wireless does not face that constraint and stays reliable in snow and storms, which matters in Colorado's mountain communities.

Backup power keeps Routt and Moffat Counties online

In Routt and Moffat Counties, ElektraFi's network runs on premium generators and backup battery equipment. The company reports 99.97% uptime in a region where power outages are routine.

ElektraFi says its service is usually less expensive than satellite alternatives and comes with a US-based support line run by a local, state-based business. CEO Ryan Jenkins said customers reach a local team, "not a mega-corp."

Residents and businesses in the served areas can check coverage and schedule installation on the ElektraFi website.
