McLean – October 29, 2026 -- Appian's Appian Defense Cloud (ADC) has received Impact Level 5 (IL5) Provisional Authorization to Operate from the US Department of War (DOW), clearing the platform to handle the department's highest-sensitivity unclassified workloads.
The IL5 designation allows ADC to store and process DOW mission-critical data, controlled unclassified information and unclassified national security systems. ADC builds on Appian's existing IL5 Appian Government Cloud offering.
Appian CTO Michael Beckley called the authorization a "significant milestone" in supplying the DOW with secure intelligent process automation for warfighter operations.
Appian's defense deployments grew almost 4x in 12 months
Appian reports that its defense footprint expanded almost fourfold in deployment volume over the last 12 months. The platform now supports:
- More than 2,000,000 active DOW and intelligence community users
- More than 100 mission platforms running mission-critical automation
- Operational communities including contract writing, legal case management, intelligence and security, foreign military sales, and logistics and maintenance
Army munitions system went live 110 days after contract award
Appian has 12 prominent Army programs in production. One of them, the Total Army Combat and Training Munitions Information System (TACTMIS), was built in 110 days from contract award and supports more than 10,000 active users worldwide.
TACTMIS unifies munitions management across the Active Army, Army National Guard, US Army Reserve and joint partners, giving senior leaders visibility for readiness decisions.
ADC packages commercial platform features inside a DOW-compliant boundary
Built on Appian's cloud-native architecture, ADC delivers the full commercial platform within the DOW-compliant boundary. Three capability sets are included:
- Orchestrated agentic intelligence: agent-assisted workflow creation, intelligent document processing, generative capabilities and agentic insights
- Data fabric: connects disparate data sources without moving core records, giving agents and users immediate context
- Process intelligence: real-time process monitoring and analytics for operational efficiency and auditability
Appian's defense record dates to its contract to architect Army Knowledge Online more than two decades ago, which grew into one of the world's largest military intranets. In 2015, it was among the first cloud service providers to achieve FedRAMP authorization.
