Brewers fan says she can’t get a refund on nearly $400 of team gear

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - Brewers fans are rushing to buy team gear online. The Better Business Bureau says that’s when scammers and return headaches show up.

A longtime fan told us she spent nearly $400 at MLBshop.com on Brewers gear for her family’s Christmas gifts. She says she didn’t like what arrived and was denied a refund.

“I have to start over”

The fan says the colors and fabric weren’t what she expected. She says the gear felt thin and the logos looked like stickers. She says she tried to return it and was offered store credit instead.

“I’m disabled and I live on very little income. I save throughout the year for my family because this is the one holiday. I get to spend with them because they live in Iowa.”

Her order came from the official site, according to the order confirmation email she received. Her problem wasn’t a scam. It was the return.

What the return policy says

MLBshop.com’s policy allows full refunds within 90 days. Clearance items, items marked final sale and non-returnable items are excluded. The fan says only one item in her order was marked final sale.

I reached out to MLBshop.com for clarification and am waiting to hear back.

BBB: Read the policy before you buy

Lisa Schiller with the BBB says shoppers often assume they can return an item. She says that isn’t always true.

“I think a lot of folks believe that, you know, they have the right to make a return, but unfortunately they don’t. It’s really up to the company to set their own policies and it’s up to the consumer before making a purchase to find out what those policies are.”

Schiller says to check whether you would get your money back or only store credit.

Fake Brewers shops are also out there

Cybersecurity company BrandShield found lookalike Brewers stores with “official” in the web address. The BBB says to check web addresses for typos and creation dates. It also says newer websites with hidden owners are red flags.

Schiller says counterfeit items are the biggest uptick the BBB has seen in Wisconsin. She says shoppers report:

- Thinner material than expected

- Crooked or off stitching

- Colors that aren’t right

Tips before you click “buy”

- Read the return policy first. Check whether you get a refund to your card or store credit only.

- Look for exclusions. Clearance, final sale and non-returnable items are often excluded.

- Check the web address. Look for typos and extra words like “official.”

- Look up the site. Make sure the company is real, and check when the site was created.

- Save your records. Keep your order confirmation and a screenshot of the return policy.

- Report problems. Scams can be reported to the BBB Scam Tracker.

This story will be updated if MLBshop.com responds.
