Dr. John C. Lipham, Professor of Surgery at USC, observed RefluxStop procedures performed by Dr. Moustafa Elshafei at Marienhaus Klinikum Mainz, Germany, on Monday, October 26. The observation is part of the training requirements for U.S. surgeons.
Lipham said his waiting list has continued to grow since the FDA approval and that he is eager to return to Los Angeles and begin treating patients.
Four more U.S. surgeons travel to Europe in mid-November
Four additional leading U.S. anti-reflux surgeons will travel to Europe in mid-November for an extensive training program. Implantica Founder and CEO Dr. Peter Forsell said several more surgeons have signed up for training and described the U.S. growth story as just beginning.
Implantica targets 78 million U.S. acid reflux sufferers
An estimated 78 million people in the U.S. suffer from acid reflux, and more than 40% continue to experience symptoms despite daily medication, according to the company.
Lipham said the implant is designed to restore the anti-reflux barrier without tightening the esophagus. He said this avoids the swallowing difficulties, gas and bloating that have limited other procedures.
European track record exceeds 1,800 patients at 60 centers
RefluxStop has treated more than 1,800 patients across more than 60 Centers of Excellence in nine European countries. The FDA approval rested on published five-year clinical outcomes. Forsell said the European results built the foundation for the U.S. launch.
Implantica is listed on Nasdaq First North Premier Growth Market in Stockholm.
