Trends Shaping Fundraising in 2026

Whether you joined us in the room at The Bridge

Conference or are reviewing these trends from afar,

one truth is clear: the donor relationship is fundamentally

changing. Below is a summary of the macro-trends

currently reshaping our sector and how non-profit

leaders must adapt.

Organizations are shifting from maximizing donor

acquisition to maximizing donor lifetime value. Donor

files continue to shrink, while retention, second-gift

conversion, sustainer programs, and lifetime value

receive greater investment. Rebuilding the pipeline of

everyday donors is essential to sustaining future midlevel,

major, and planned giving programs.

The organizations that thrive won’t simply keep more

donors—they’ll continuously create the next generation

of donors.

The conversation has shifted from having more data

to having better data. Organizations are investing

more heavily in first-party data, predictive modeling,

smarter segmentation, and audience intelligence.

Testing is becoming more strategic, with fewer but more

meaningful experiments focused on understanding

donor behavior.

Organizations that know their donors best will thrive.

Artificial Intelligence is changing how donors discover,

evaluate, and engage with nonprofits. AI search and

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are changing

how organizations are found online, while paid media

increasingly relies on machine learning and creative

optimization. Digital success increasingly depends on

integrating search, paid media, social media, email, and

content into one coordinated strategy.

AI is no longer simply a productivity tool—it is reshaping

the donor journey.

Privacy is evolving from a compliance concern into

a strategic fundraising consideration. State privacy

laws continue to expand and evolve, making data

collection, sharing, and activation increasingly complex. Organizations must balance personalization with donor

trust and regulatory compliance.

Privacy considerations are increasingly influencing

fundraising strategy—not just legal review.

Despite having more data than ever, understanding

what truly drives giving is increasingly difficult. Multichannel

donor journeys, DAF giving, privacy regulations,

and AI-driven discovery are complicating traditional

measurement and KPIs. Organizations are becoming

more comfortable using directional insights rather than

expecting perfect attribution.

Better decisions increasingly depend on understanding

influence—not simply measuring transactions.

Giving vehicles and donor preferences continue to

change, particularly with the growth of Donor-Advised

Funds (DAFs). Electronic giving continues to grow while

paper checks continue their long-term decline.

Organizations that understand and embrace emerging

giving behaviors will be better positioned to capture

future philanthropy.

Technology continues to evolve—but trust remains the

foundation of fundraising success. Donors increasingly

expect transparency, measurable impact, authentic

storytelling, and consistent experiences across channels. Trust influences both donor acquisition and long-term

retention.

Technology may help organizations reach more donors,

but trust is ultimately what inspires people to give.

Taken together, these trends point to something bigger

than a collection of new tactics or technologies.

The donor relationship is shifting. Donors are giving

differently, discovering organizations differently, and

moving across more channels. They expect more from

the organizations they support and are becoming harder

to measure through any single transaction or channel.

At the same time, the value of a lasting donor relationship

has never been greater. The future of fundraising depends

less on how well we optimize each transaction, and

more on how well we understand, earn, and sustain the

relationship behind it.
